Mega Man Zero Appreciation Thread

I think most will agree 2 is the hardest. 1 is a great introduction into the series honestly and you can find it on the cheap possible. 3 and 4 are great too. Cant REALLY go wrong.
i'm not going to get all 4. pick a favourite! overall the best package.

I think I'll always enjoy part 1 the best. The overall package, from the beginning the end, the story, the music, the ending, its all very, very good.

Part 2 is indeed tough as hell, so I think its best to start a bit easier.

Part 3 is easier in spots, but it was still tough as hell near the end. It was made more difficult to beat on my end simply because I had to (for review purposes), though the ending made it all totally worth it.

Edit: Oh, and I never used any of the cyber elves. You're not "supposed" to given the game design of the rankings and stuff. Instead of being able to use them in later entries, I'd prefer if Capcom got rid of cyber elves entirely.

Yeah, I've never found the system to be at all elegant in its implementation.

well 2-4 really developed the mechanics of the series. I think the first one was really more like 'could we do a good mega man on GBA SP' experiment.

Oh, 1's a great game, no doubt, but the Cyber Elf implementation is so much wonkier than later titles. Still classic 2D action, regardless.

Just beat bug guy in MMZ3, just with the saber. Sorta the same way I killed the armored bat guy too. So far the stuff ive got from them hasnt helped me beat other bosses hehe.

Almost 60 posts and not one "I have Zero Appreciation for Mega Man!" type post. Hm.

That's because the series rocks.

What can you say to complain?

1.) "I am weaksauce."

2.) "Waaaah! They're all the same!"

Neither is really valid because the quality is so consistent throughout the games.

Bingo.

Here's my review as promised:

I was surprised to see some much lower scores at other sites...1up gave it a 6.5?!? Like someone said above, it's hard to complain about the games being so similar when they're all so great, but MMZ4 does a lot of things to improve the previous games. If you look at its individual merits, I think it's definitely one of the best GBA action games out there.

Did anyone buy this game initially for the art? That was my number one draw since I lost track with the X timeline after 4.

I was actually a bit withdrawn from the art style at first. It was a bit too different from what I was used to at the time. Needless to say that disappeared quickly when I played the game. That, and Ciel has always been cute

(speaking of which, her portrait in MMZ4 sucks. A shame too >_> )

The art is pretty cool, Zero is a big ol badass. Specially when he gets those recoil rods in 3. That cover art rox. He's like, come get some.

Nah, I wasn't drawn in by the artwork, in fact I was turned off by it initially. I'm not a big fan of 'cutesy cutesy' anime art. I prefer the artwork of Mega Man in the earlier games and in the first X game. But it works for in-game artwork, I think. And of course, the graphics and sprites look teriffic.

If you ever get desperate, I would consider trading or selling my copy to you. I don't think I will ever touch it again. Perfect condition including box and manual too(because I'm not a savage)

Dunno. $15 seem fair?

I should add that while I still have the box in pristine condition, I'm having trouble finding the manual. I usually keep all my GBA manuals in a binder, but that one wasn't with the others. It's possible I did misplace it over the years, but I'll keep looking.

Yeah seriously. Who gives a shit about stilted enemies and tacked-on melee when at least it's consistent. As consistent as the timing of the disappearing blocks in Zero 1, even!

nvm

Sigh, sadly I haven't been able to contribute much here despite my love for the Zero series. Hell I haven't even touched Zero 4 much, been totally busy with Phoenix Wright D: Seeing the Zero 4 pics up there tho, man I look forward to it. YOU BETTER PLAY ON ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS IN 4. :P

I just started playing MMZ1 and I'm confused about lives in the game. It seems if I 'retry' when I die during a boss fight a couple times I lose my lives forever? And then that stage disappears? How the hell do I get lives back? If I keep losing lives by using 'retry' am I fucked later on in the game? Help!! (yeah I'm weaksauce)

Basically the interface in MMZ is horrible.

You have 1 single life. But when you die, depending on your "continues", you can retry. The nice thing is that with Retry, you are able to continue where the boss is should you die there, assuming you have Retries left. The bad part about Retry is that it utterly destroys your ranking. I guess it differs from "continues" in that once all your retries are used up, your game isn't over. You just can't replay the stages.

Therefore, once you start really playing the game, you simply play. If you die, you reload from save to avoid using up a Retry.

I hear subsequent games give it a normal continue mode.

Been playing Z2 and Z3 tonight, its pretty clear why Z2 is harder. The LEVELS are actually harder. Even in non-cyberspace mode, aside from some physical obstacles, enemies at least through the first four bosses are pretty tame. Z2 is completely different. The levels are tough in every respect right off. Z2 rocks so much tho, as does Z3. Z1 someday soon omg omg!
