Megaman X Plot Speculation

The End

Member
Ok, so my love affair with the blue bomber's angsty cousin has been revived by the suprisingly good MMX8. While I've played X-6, Command Mission, the first 2 Zero games, and the both
Megaman Power Battle
games , I'm a bit out of the loop as far as what happened in X7. I'm going to sum up what I think I know, and you guys can fill in the rest.

X: Possibly a
rebuilt version of the original Megaman
, X will eventually create multiple copies of himself before evolving into a pure AI during the Zero timeline. However, these copies will be evil.

Zero: Created by
Dr. Wily in a last ditch attempt to beat Megaman, Zero may in fact be a rebuilt version of Protoman
. The original carrier of the "Maverick Virus", Zero infected Sigma, then leader of the Maverick Hunters, before being re-programmed by the Maverick Hunters for good. At some point in the nebulous future, he'll be "destroyed" and entombed undergroud for Ciel to find during the MegaMan Zero timeline.

Axl: Having not played MMX7, I don't know much about rapid-firing, low-defense-having friend. I generally avoided him in X8, especially considering I don't really know how to use his triangle shot. His origin was hinted at in Command Mission, setting him up for a larger role in the sequel.

I just wonder how they'll fit MMZ into MML, because from what we know, humans are extinct since MMX4 (I think) and the humans in MML are supposedly some kind of new breed of humans that can easily have machines attached to them (supposedly some signs of this are already showing up in MMZ, but I wouldn't know since I've never played any of them)

Humans move to the moon in X8, I think that's how we get the "no humans on earth thing"

And the "humans" in Zero, i believe, are actually highly-evolved semi-organic reploids, which would fit in with Legends.

Also, originally, Zero was supposed to "die" at the end of X5, which would segue into the Zero series, but Capcom brought him back (again) in X6.

I want Megaman 9. Something to bridge the gap between the regular series and the X series. Capcom could take MM9 as an opportunity to answer some of the unanswered questions from the X series. This would then make Megaman X the 10th game (time wise) in the series. That seems fitting somehow.

The X series story started going down hill in X4. X5 and X6 were even worse. I'm a huge MM fan and I have yet to play X7 or X8 because X5 and X6 left such a bad taste in my mouth.

I'd say X4 was the "peak". X5 was good, X6 was crap, and X7 was total shit. X8, while flawed, is better than 5, 6, or 7, and I think Capcom deserves a lot of credit for "going back to basics". Admittedly, the vehicle sequences are a bit crap, but the levels are solid, and the gameplay is tight.

And yeah, I'd love a proper MM9.

I forger where, but I read somewhere that there "wasn't enough interest" in a proper Mega Man 9, which is sad. I too want to see a proper bridge, though considering that Capcom screwed up their own timeline with Mega Man X6, I guess its sort of a moot point.

I would love to see a GOOD Mega Man RPG take the place of Mega Man 9, since there's so much potential story to work with.

Megaman Legends is not meant to tie into the others. Megaman Zero's story was supposed to come from Megaman X5, as the X series was supposed to end there. That messed up the intended continuity, as did the creation of Command Mission. Zero is not Protoman, and your speculation about X is answered in Megaman Zero 1-3.

Of course, trying to make sense of the Megaman storyline is like trying to make sense of Street Fighter's (hmmm, let's say that Bison IS Rose, I bet no one'll notice). Too many people have dabbled in plots that are meant to be secondary to gameplay, and now they are incomprehensible mess of insane ideas.

Did anything worthwhile come out of MMX7?

Uh, no, IIRC. It focused mostly on that tool Axl.

So MMX8 isn't that bad? As a rabid Megaman fan, I found MMX7 playable, even though it was one of the weakest games in the entire platformer series (never liked any of the spinoffs). How is MMX8 more back to basics?

Ok, we know for sure that Zero was created by Wily from the Power Battle 2 ending, but you say he's not Protoman? Ok.

What do we learn about the X/MM connection from the Zero games? I really have no desire to beat 2 or play 3.

And yeah, X8 is pretty good. The Trilobyte and Pandamonium levels are particularly well-done.

You can play as Protoman in PB2. Zero, like X, is a completely new unit.

I remember seeign a video where some guy interview Inafune about some of the MegaMan plot during E3. I think it was Planet Megaman...

He laughed and said "ara ara" quite a bit while he tried to answer some questions... The subliminal message was "dude, it's just a game..." :(

Zero doesn't really fit with much of the post X5 story, but as far as X
X went on fighting mavericks after the X games, eventually founding the reploid free all human utopia of Neo Arcadia. Copy X was created to rule Neo Arcadia while X himself sealed the Dark Elf with his body. While his physical form was inactive, his Elf self was free. Elpizo destroyed X's body in Zero2, but his Cyber Elf had enough energy to last until the end of Zero 3, where it faded away.

Copy X was restored in Zero 3 by Dr. Weil to manipulate the people of Neo Arcadia, but he was rigged with a bomb and was killed again. Copy X was not evil, just blindly loyal to the humans and completely set on his mission to destroy all reploids other than himself and his liuetenants because he saw them as threats to humanity-simply an extension of all the time that X fought mavericks in the X games. The mindless Pantheon troops of Neo Arcadia are based on X.

There has to be more to it than that. Look at the end of X5. Sigma basically comes right out and says it.

What does he say? I forget. I mostly remember the Wily logo towards the end of MMX5.

So
X is dead dead then, right? Well, at least until Zero 4. I mean, honestly, they've killed Zero enough times, it's bound to be X's turn.

We'll find out in October, but I would assume that
since the cyber world turns out to be some sort of digital afterlife in Zero 3, you probably find X there in Zero 4 or something

He says he has a partner, an old man who knows a lot about robots and hates Megaman as much as he does.

For me the end of Mega Man X5 was the peak, with the wily boss music and neon purple W's in the boss backgrounds, that was such ownage.

One thing you have to remember is that Inafune planned to orginally end it with X5, and then Capcom kept making more after that anyway, fucking with his storyline.

You know, the thing about X4 is that it feels so...slow. I'm not sure what it is. But the action in the first 3 X games seems so rapid and fast-paced.

But in X4(and later in X5 and 6), the gameplay got slower. I'm not sure if this is because the framerate is increased, or because the sprites got smaller or what. But it makes the game a lot less fun to play. Now that I mention it, Mega Man 8 had the same problem.

But the anime cinemas in both games were very nice, bad voice acting notwithstanding.

X4 > X1 > X2 > X5 > X3 > X6 > X7

I don't know about X8 yet. And let's not forget about Mega Man Xtreme 1 and 2.

Yeah.

X8 actually feels quite a bit faster than the PS1 games. The framerate is a fairly solid 60, and even though X is the slowest of the three, once you collect the Neutral Armor, he speeds up quite a bit.

Yeah, I got MMX8 for $10 new at Wherehouse Music. It's awesome.

Legends and Battle Network don't fit into the Classic-X-Zero timeline so far. Maybe a subsequent game might cross reference it, but as of right now, it's not connected.

It's best to think of the X area as a splintering. X5 begat 2 lines, Zero and X6. Then there was another splint with Command Mission, although, with X9 and CM2 planned, I don't know where those'll lead, but being that Capcom is looking for story suggestions, I figure they plan on having X9 and CM2 eventually restore continuity somehow, in a magical trance way.

What about Elysium?

BN is alternate timeline (what if Light got the government grant instead of Wily?) and Legends is supposedly deep into the future after X
crashes the space station from X5 into the earth or something
, which explains why most of the world are islands and everyone is a cyborg

But Lan's father made the PET. There's no mention of Light at all, unless the Japanese version says something that was changed in America.

I was under the impression that X8 happened after CM, and that CM was just a side-story.

Pulling this out of the grave because of Maverick Hunter X and its retconned plot bits...

Since
Dr. Cain dies
in the anime you get after beating the game, how will they explain
his appearance in X3 (or 2 or whatever one it was?)
And Vile apparently has no ties to anyone according to MHX, so how will his part of the story play out in later titles?

Just started up my copy of Mega Man X collection for the GameCube -- and I'm quite impressed. The games are playable!

I played MMX many years ago, but I never played any of the other X games. I'm expecting to be confused now... someone needs to make a silly little "Mega Man Series Timeline" up.

MHX = MMX: George Lucas Edition. :P

Where does Megaman & Bass fit?
Someone answer this man, dammit, I've been wondering this all day!

Also, is there some website that's got the timeline all mapped out? I have NO IDEA that the MegaMan games had such an 'involved' story. :O
