Memory Stick Duo Questions

stuck my tongue deep inside Atlus' cookies
I feel like a noob asking all this here, but I figure you guys are (generally) nice, so its my best bet for getting some straight answers. 1GB cards are still impossible to find and I need something before E3, so I'm thinking about getting two 512s. Some questions:

1) A 512 is big enough to hold pretty much any feature film, right? It'll be enough to contain like 2 and a half hours of compressed PSP video, at least?

2) I have a cybershot digital camera that uses the same stick. If I have a duo with PSP saves/video, can I still stick it in my digicam and use the remaining memory for pictures, or can it only be formatted for one or the other at any given time?

3) Anything else you wish you would have known, before you bought one (or two) 512s? General advice?

One of the more hardcore PSP video encoders can answer #1.

#2. Yes you can use the stick interchangeably between digicam and PSP. Formatting for one doesn't prevent it from being used in the other. PSP has its own folder structure on the Memstick that doesn't interfere with that of Sony digicams.

#3. I posted a thread last week that Sandisk is planning to up production on 512 Meg and 1 gig duos within next 2-3 months. They were caught off guard by demand related to PSP launch, expected everyone to go for lower capacity memsticks. FYI in case you have the patience to wait a little longer for 1 gigs instead of 512. They're also starting production of 2 gig Duos within the same timeframe.

From what I can tell by just using DVD Shrink and 3GP Converter - You can fit about 1/2 hour with 256. Close to an hour with 512 and maybe a whole movie with 1G but a 2 1/2 hour movie may not cut it.

at a 512/96 a/v bitrate you can fit like 1:50 on a 512

Disappointed with the video storage news. No feature films on my 512... :(

I would love to be patient and wait for a 1 or 2GB stick but I need something before E3. Long long flight/layover.

Good news about the digicam, though. Maybe I'll just get *one* 512 for now, to throw some TV shows on there for the flight, and then for all my E3 pics. Then in the fall I'll get a bigger one for all the uber multimedia capabilities.

The only thing i've tried on my PSP is the anime Air, it looks great on PSP since it's widescreen & it fits the screen perfectly. If I remove the intro from each episode, I end up with episodes with the size of about 70MB (~20 minutes each). I think a 512 has about 460MB available to use. That would mean I can have at least 6 episodes on a 512. So at least 2 hours would fit on a 512 at the settings I am currently using.

I used 368x208/29.97fps/QB4 Stereo/96kbps on PSP Video 9.

I haven't tried ripping any of my DVD's and converting them to mp4 to play on PSP, but I have a friend who has. He was watching some strange chinese movie about 2 hours long and the quality looked good to me. He said it was 400-something MB.
So i'd say 512MB is enough for a 2 hour movie if you do it right. It just won't look as good as if you were to buy a movie on UMD.

Just play around with settings to make things fit the way you want, and also try out different mp4 converters.
