Mercury Steam, the Spanish developer behind Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Spacelords & Metroid Dread has been teasing a new game called Project Iron since feb 6'th, this twitter account was just renamed to Blades of Fire. It appears to be a third person game set in a Dark Fantasy setting
It was announced to be in development back in 2021 and is expected to release on PC & Consoles. The game runs on their own Mercury Engine and is funded with an AA budget (~30M)

They did a fantasy game back in 2001 with Severance: Blade of Darkness, back when the developer was known as Rebel Act Studios. A proto souls-like.

Now do Breath of Fire you cowards

Glad they are just gonna fuck up their own game rather than Metroid or Castlevania. Seems like I'm the first hater in the thread…sorry but I really haven't liked any of their games I've played.

One of my favorite studios out there. Very interested to see what this is. They literally made the best Castlevania and the best Metroid.

I have cero faith in them, I don't think they can hadle big projects unsupervised. Nintendo really knows how to make their work shine but all their independently created games are a trash fire of Spanish and EU taxes.

Came here to shit on the title, but someone already did. "Blades of Fire", come on dude.
Still interested in this because they obviously know how the make good games.

Loved everything this studio made. I'm in for whatever they announce!

One of the most underrated devs in the industry in my opinion.

$60 or less and I'll buy it today no questions. $70 and I'll wait for the 2nd trailer or gameplay deep dive.

Looks great.

Looks insanely good tbh.

Gameplay seems GOW2018-like, no?

That was my impression as well, especially when I saw the weird gray dwarf followed by a shot of the protagonist forging a weapon. It looks like a good old-fashioned game with no woke elements at all judging by the trailer.

Based on your other post in the Lies of P thread, sounds like you just have bad taste.

Looks cool. But EGS exclusive is pretty shit.

That decision didn't work out at all for Remedy Entertainment, I hope it doesn't hurt Mercury Steam financially. The free money from Epic is probably not enough to make up for the loss in Steam sales.

The camera and combat remind me more of this older game called Enclave.

I know the game is called blades of fire and they showed a sword and axe, but I'm hoping they also let the player forge a hammer or mace of some kind.

People are acting like Steam users would have bought into an arthouse 1-player title. We know what titles PC gamers are predisposed to buying day 1 and this is not one of them.

If Epic didn't publish and fund AW2 then it likely would not have existed to begin with.

Most people these days value polish and budget over originality and the unknown.
It remains to be seen if the game is any good. It's possible. Can't say I have much faith in Mercurysteam though. Their Castlevania games are well liked generally speaking but I thought they were awful.

Judging the gameplay shown here, I'm definitely not a fan of the low FOV and constant camera movement. Looks nauseating. The combat looks unspectacular.

Im not claiming I know its good. But I've liked every one of their previous games. I like that its a new IP. The trailer says its an original combat system and this one of the few teams I believe can back that up.. And I will enjoy finding out for myself if it sucks or not, while supporting a team I like and an underdog AA game. And I dont want to wait further in the year. Ninja Gaiden 4 will hit in Fall / Winter.

Sounds pretty unique though. Much larger weapon variety and a robust crafting system. Combat targets body parts. Sounds intriguing

I'll be too busy playing Doom Dark Ages and Onimusha 2 to even consider this one.

Yeah I also thought their Castlevanias were mid GOW ripoffs at best

And I think Dread sucks a dick. Worst 2D Metroid out there by a country mile

I'll still give them the benefit of the doubt since Im not a total prick, but yeah, nothing they've ever done has rocked my world

Could be interesting if it's a successor to Blade of Darkness but until Steam Release I sleep.

I'd need to see unedited gameplay with UI to make proper judgment.

MercurySteam's last two single player games were Metroid: Samus Returns and Metroid Dread. This is a developer with pedigree. I'm looking forward to this. I just don't believe it was wise to announce a game just two months before its release and announce the launch trailer on social media instead of during a Sony/MS/Geoff Keighley show with an audience of millions. There's a substantial risk that a game with such a short , low-profile marketing period will fly completely under the radar and be completely forgotten within a week.
