Pre-ordered mine. But god damn the price is horrible. The tech is great though, hopefully Valve announces Index 2 soon.

I think their overselling this metaverse.

Quest for business, a subscription based service>>>??

I dont see most of us(old farts) being in VR for more than 40 minutes with the current headsets.

smart on mark to keep quest and most of his hardware as an "open eco system"
I like sideloading my stuff on quest 2.

I guess no announcement on the quest 3.

Theyre already hinting micro transactions via clothes for your avatars.

fucking the new Roblox for the new gen

These motherfuckers are so anxious to get your money they can barely contain themselves and make an actual viable product first.

They started selling digital land in the Metaverse before the Metaverse was even operational. And it still isn't.

Greed-driven innovation will never work [see NFTs for a prime example].

very technical presentation, about qualcomm chipset/ partnership, eye tracking, battery, and heat dissipation. Him not using features on the pro headset he is wearing because he is worried about being embarrassed.
explains the Pro isnt for the general consumer masses.

Talks about the experiences of the Pro not stuttering moving in and out of UI while playing games in background. Pass through experience .

Very honest take on his work and real world differences of the pro compared to the quest 2. Talks of devs , limitations, pretty interesting if you are a nerd.
He definitely is tapped into the the beat of the consumers and nerds alike out there.

Watching Carmack's talk now. I love that he just tells it like it is and is extremely transparent about everything going on. Absolutely zero fucks given, zero pretense. The inter-dimensional time travelling space wizard masquerading as a game developer stays winning.

Wait people are actually into this and preordering? Holy shit!

Well, thinking back on steam index + controllers + towers at launch MSRP even selling, I don’t see why it’s shocking that this has a niche it will sell to?

Total turn off for me, just as index was. When you go from Quest 2 prices to those… ouf

Battery is apparently 1-2 hours too, that’s really bad.

Fair point in all seriousness. But the whole Meta experience is such a turn off to me. It seems to lack a strong focus that a niche product would have. Like what is the selling point for this headset? I thought it was the Metaverse; I'll admit I know next to nothing about it overall, and just like to laugh at the whole venture and bad avatars.

Just seems like a soulless piece of tech to me.

I love my quest 2 that I picked up as a refurb right before the price increase. The Pro seems kinda pointless, for games half the tech is useless, for business I'm just not seeing the use case.

I have 7 VR headsets sitting on the shelf behind me as I type this, dating back to unit #42 of the DK1 Kickstarter, and I could not have any less interest in this device. Comically overpriced, comically underpowered, and comically underspec'ed. If someone gave me one I would sell it.

Carmack is a god in giving tech talks and can talk about silicone wavers and memory IO for 8 hours without pause.

I'm glad he's passionate but I hate to see his talents wasted at this dogshit company with its terrible products.

I have a WMR headset and 2 quest 2s(3 if I count the one I got for my other child who lives far away)

JC did say alot about the growing pains of VR and he did say it was going to be painful.
He does believe that one day/ in the far future, we are going to have a VR device that replaces most of our gadgets for work and play.
He knows we are not there yet but seems content on the small upgrades he has been part of in the whole VR growing space.

The inward camera that captures your face and expressions is a great step in that direction.

One day, these things(vr headsets) will be lighter, better, reflect yourself in a virtual space better, where you can spend time with grandma, your child, anyone who you love that is far away, in jail, or with major disabilities.
I think it would be great in certain cases as I have gotten a quest 2 for my other alienated child to play rec room. And being there playing laser tag or charades with my daughter in virtual space, speaking and seeing her short scaled to life avatar does bring these human connections better.

It only goin to get better for sure. But as much as I want to make fun of it now, it will one day have its uses.

maybe until then Ill just wait for the quest 3 to sign up as dev to sideload games.

To celebrate the $1,500 headset, Meta made some fun new additions to its privacy policy, including one titled “Eye Tracking Privacy Notice.” The company says it will use eye-tracking data to “help Meta personalise your experiences and improve Meta Quest.” The policy doesn’t literally say the company will use the data for marketing, but “personalizing your experience” is typical privacy-policy speak for targeted ads. And if you had any doubts, Meta executives have been explicit about it.

Eye tracking data could be used “in order to understand whether people engage with an advertisement or not,” said Meta’s head of global affair Nick Clegg in an interview with the Financial Times. (Meta didn’t respond to Gizmodo’s request for comment.)

Whether you’re resigned to targeted ads or not, this technology takes data collection to a place we’ve never seen. The Quest Pro isn’t just going to inform Meta about what you say you’re interested in, tracking your eyes and face will give the company unprecedented insight about your emotions.

“We know that this kind of information can be used to determine what people are feeling, especially emotions like happiness or anxiety,” said Ray Walsh, a digital privacy researcher at ProPrivacy. “When you can literally see a person look at an ad for a watch, glance for ten seconds, smile, and ponder whether they can afford it, that’s providing more information than ever before.”

Uhh, yeah no thanks.

Well in context of gaming, there are plenty of talented engine developers doing great work out there, Carmack is not needed to push things forward.
