Dunno about fishing but bought a neon fishing lure for a music festival, had it in my mouth and, accidently bit and it poisoned me. Was violently ill while off my head on ecstasy. Still lasted the festival but I would never recommend being that stupid to anyone. I think the drugs dulled the pain which is even worse. Glow-sticks were sold out everywhere, thought I was being clever but no. A complete idiot.

EDIT: an ex's Father had a fish shop. Drowned in a pond when fishing. Don't do that either.

You plan on doing saltwater or fresh water?

I primarily do freshwater. I have some limited saltwater experience, mostly pier fishing and lobster catching.
I have only court one freshwater fish, and it was a pike sharp, teeth and I can't remember what it tasted like
most of the fish I have caught has been mackerel

"Novices" SHOULD NOT be out mushrooming. Every year there are experts that die from eating the wrong kind.

My cousin walked out of their vegetable/herb garden a few years ago and found the whole thing covered with a crop of morels. It never happened before, hasn't happened since - go figure.

BTW, it's essentially impossible to get into trouble with morels - nothing that looks like them is fatal and few other things come up in the spring anyway. Not so, of course, with the fall mushrooms.

Be careful, OP.

It is much easier to grow mushrooms. I spent a lot of time looking at local mushrooms in my area on hikes, it was extremely rare that I could find a mushroom that I could ID even with reference material that caters to my geograpgical area.

Fishing is fun but there are so many factors that go into your success that it really isn't a simple hobby. What kind of fish are you going after, where do you live, no one can give you any good advice without knowing a lot about your situation. I find fishing extremely fun when I am successful, otherwise I spend a lot of time wondering why fish I know are there dont care at all about my bait or lures. Things like water temperature/time of year are really important.

Edit: Also in regards to mushrooms, according to a book I read only 10% of mushroom species are considered edible. The rest are either really gross or are dangerous to eat. In my area the growing season for most mushrooms people eat is super short.

I like to fish, I find it both fun and relaxing and it also helps that I live 30 min away from some good fishing spots.
I like it in a very casual "unwind on the weekend kinda way", drive out to the river after lunch, enjoy being out there in nature and (usually) bring home a fish.

Never been into the hardcore "I'm out here waist deep in water freezing my ass at 6AM!!!" sort of fishing.

Novices should not fear mushrooming. Pick as many, eat as many as you can and when you can eat no more, have your family and friends eat them. And if there are still leftovers, have your family and friends give them to their family and friends.

Mushrooms are one thing i'd do again. Went to a gig on LCD in London and sat in a pissed-stained toilet-seat and looked at the walls and contemplated life.

Went back to my room and recommended it to my bro. He enjoyed it too. We had an awesome night.

With mushrooms I made tea, damn things had worms in them. Fuck you TEAM17! :p

I only pick penny buns/boletus or whatever you call them in english. Can't really go wrong with them. I know a few spots where after some rainy summer days I can basically shovel them, they are that many. Sometimes I will pick up some chanterelles but they are rather difficult to find. Every other mashroom can go to hell.

Basically, stick to the ones you really know and have no similar looking but poisonous counterparts.

I am obsessed with fishing. Not to the point of $1000 rods but I have several rods and a very nice Native Watercraft Kayak (bought for by DOGE). I mostly fish fresh, but I am working on learning the intercoastal here in FL. Hopefully next year I'll do some small offshore stuff off the beach.

YES! I have a story.. and weirdly enough it was on a day we didnt take out our detector. A mate and me were mad on detecting stuff, we used to go out on the local common for hours on end, we'd gone out the day prior and found nothing. The next day we went over the local woods next to the common to piss around as teenagers do and weirdly found a metal object on the top soil, odd looking thing with weird symbols and from what we could make out, german words..

We took it to our local towns museum, some old boy told us it looked like a german incendiary bomb.. but it was a dud. Thinking nothing of it we took it home..

Two days later the local radio reported that a live bomb was somewhere in town, my mates mum told him, he phoned me (I had it in the shed), bomb squad showed up at mine tripping out, I passed them the bomb, they run off to detonate it..

It was still live :messenger_tears_of_joy:

We made front page news, still got the news paper..

Fuck me. If it had gone off in my shed it only would have been 4500 degrees so thats a plus. The moral of the story? You dont always need your detector to find stuff..

Fishing? I once caught twelve mackerel on a thirteen spinner cast on the cliffs at the back of the Headland hotel in Cornwall. Great day that was.

Mushrooms? Erm, good with steak.

My first try with magic mushrooms in amsterdam was by far the best drug experience i ever had, 8 hours of vivid dream with my best friend, but i fucking hate the taste when you chew them.

Other than that, last time i was fishing was like 10 years ago when i had a medium size boat, worse part was getting biten by those fucking korean worms that you use as a bait :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

Make tea my friend, you only need to boil them. I'm no expert though, someone told me to and it was fantastic.

Doesn't last very long and barely a come-down compared to LSD. You can trip on them as well but it's much different to LSD tabs, more like ecstasy but way shorter. No eels bit me, got an awkward blowjob though. Boiling kills the maggots/worms. But the tea has worm/maggot in them, fuck worms/maggots. Eating my goddamn mushrooms.

Had a cat she kept eating all the worms, dug up flowerbeds and would deliver mice and rats. I think she was on mushrooms. I should have boiled her.

Eating shrooms or truffles is the way to have the strongest effect, like i said, 8 hours of trip for me (10 for my friend).

Never tried lds or exctasy, i'm more of a weed guy with some rare shrooms\snow side adventure :lollipop_squinting:

I wasn't bited by an eel, but by this fucker

They have a small mouth and it's like getting bited by a very large ant (not much force involved but you can feel the squeeze)

Had a missus that went to my 21st to hook up.

She loved mushrooms but very hard to get unless you drive down the country and all the nerds know the places. We had legal drug shops here, got shut down pretty much immediately. I never went, synthetic weed? Fuck that.

Drug dealers went and burned the shops out. I swear the places in the city centre were burnt, was a serious problem. Dublin is very backwards like that. It's all publicly available. Just drug-dealers burned out the competition. These are all lower-class city centre-places. With the likes of the IRA and MIRA torching them.

Good luck finding a place open now. They're all gone. Hwoever owned them was fucked. Plenty of articles online.

I just buy whatever i can find in amsterdam since i visit the city 1-2 times every year exceot for the last 2 because of this fucking covid.

In the past they had mushrooms but now they just sell trouffles, the way less potent variant.

Sometimes i bringed something back to italy but has been years since my last try, i just usually enjoy the weed and hash over there.

I have this one rapala fishing lure that is neon orange and reflects UV. Useless most of the time until it's noon and the sky is clear. Damn thing nails trout as soon as i throw it in only for an hour.

Mushrooms are fun, i just got a buddy to appreciate them. Start with two grams and in comfortable setting.

This is what happens when there are not enought consoles in the market...people return to those grotesque outdoor activities from last century where you can die or get hurt...

Quote for truth. I don't know a damned thing about picking edible mushrooms f om those that will kill me, it just isn't worth it.

If you're looking for a hobby I would suggest calling down a YouTube rabbit hole of growing your own mushrooms. You can use spent coffee grounds for your grow media to get into it relatively cheap.

Any experience, advice or thoughts on metal detecting, picking mushrooms or fishing
For metal detecting make sure you get a detector that can ground balance. Depending on where you live and where you are hunting, it can make all of the difference. I hunt with a Garrett AT Pro. It’s in the middle of the pack in price, but has been great.
For picking mushrooms, make sure you go with someone who knows what they are doing. There are legitimately hundreds of look alikes that can kill you if you eat them. If you still choose to go on your own, be careful, and make sure you have a solid guide book with you, and always take spore prints to be doubly sure before eating anything.
With fishing, I used to a lot, but haven’t in several years, and was very amateur so I can’t help you there.

I got Garrett Ace I 400 and for the mushrooms I don't eat anything I am not a hundred percent of.

Good, especially about the mushrooms. Only other thing I can think is, maybe if you don’t have one already, get a Garrett pinpointer for detecting. It will cut your dig time by at least 75%.
