I'm currently looking at PSP games I'd like to pick up, now that I have the sexy hunk of hardware. One game that has intrigued me since launch is MGA.

I've never liked MG(S) games, because I never liked stealth. But I love card games (been playing Magic:TG since 95 and also love Culdcept) With MGA being what it is, it sounds right up my alley.

Any impressions or thoughts on the game? I know you build your deck, but how are cards distrubuted to you? Do you get random shots at them after doing certain things like in Culdcept? Is the game shallow, or deep? I know MGA2 is coming out soon, so I want to get the first one and see how I like it.
 
You get cards by either collecting them in the levels or buying them in the card shop. Primarily you get the from the card shop...you get points for completing missions and grade score (depending on damage, speed, and stealth I think)

The game isn't shallow and I dont think it's way deep, although I dont play many of these type of games. TH eproblem with MGAcid is that the instruction manual and game doesn't document much of the gameplay elements. For example, the game or instruction manual never tells you that you can back up against a wall and pop up and shoot around the corner like in the MGS2/3 games. Plus the fact that the translation sucks doesn't make it any easier. Still, good game
 
Well, Metal Gear Acid 2 fixes some of the problems with Acid 1. You can now face any direction, crawl, lean against a wall, or knock after each turn without a penalty. The biggest problem I had with the original was how to use the weapon equip cards. The game and the manual didn't clarify how to use them just saying to use "ammo cards". Well, there isn't any ammo cards in the game but how it works is you equip a weapon card and when you want to use it on a enemy, you equip either the same equip weapon card over the one you have or you apply another weapon equip card with the same "ammo type" on the card. The entire time I was playing Acid 1 and more than halfway through Acid 2 I was just using the "Use" weapon cards to get through the game. I was not playing both Acid games correctly :P

Oh in Acid 2, you can now skip entire codec text by pressing start to go straight to the action.
 
I didn't find it too difficult to figure out all the nuanced rules and whatnot on the fly, but it certainly isn't presented all that intuitively either. Fortunately, the game eases you into the experience at a pretty relaxed pace with decent sized gaps before introducing new features and combat options.

Game is pretty neat, but the camera can sometimes be a bear to deal with, and the interface makes tweaking your sole deck(no custom decks) a trifling exercise between sorties. The difficulty takes a dramatic turn around the halfway point and might find yourself replaying previous missions to beef up your deck to handle the severe jump.

Really unique and addictive game when it clicks, but not a classic.
 
I'm stuck on the drawbridge level. Snake versus four soldiers with little room to move around in. I can take out two quickly with a socom grenade combo, but the other two always take me down, even when I have two front evades equiped :(
 
Acid kicked so much ass, and I can't wait for 2. Has there been an official date announced or are we still just hoping for late March?
 
I dug this game a lot, but I still have yet to finish it. The only other problem with this game beyond what everyone else has mentioned, (gameplay elements not clearly explained or detailed and pretty shoddy translation), is that certain missions require you to have certain cards to get past them. Most of the time you are not told you need that particular card untill you've reached the point where you need to use it, and if you did not have it loaded up in your deck.. you are screwed.

I made it all the way to the the 3rd or 2nd to last level, and I was working my way through the level all with out being spotted which was increasingly difficult, and I'd restart the mission if I was spotted. So after awhile of working my way through, (and each time is different just based on the cards available to you on that hand), I make it to the objective just to be told I need to have a rocket launcher on me to get past this point. I turned of the game in disgust and havn't picked it up yet.

Guess I'll need to soon since MGA2 is coming out next month... but man that really pissed me off. Great game though!
 
Is there a way to get a level 2 keycard in a mission? I know it's a MGS2 card, but having to play levels over and over and hopefully drawing one sucks....
 
At some point in the game, Teliko will give you a level 2 keycard. I don't believe there is any other way to acquire it.

Are you sure? I know I have a level one card that she gave me early on. I'm at the armory/rope bridge part. To get past the rope bridge, you must take out cyphers with a sniper rifle you get at the armory. They say you need L1 and 2 cards to get through the armory though, and I only have a level 1 card.
 
My bad, she gives you the level 1 card not the level 2 one. I blame old age. :P Give me a minute to collect my thoughts.

Yeah I was at that point in the game but go so frustrated because I could not find a Lvl 2 Card that I sold it...

I regret it but I just know this will become a PSP GH when the line is announced for NA.
 
I'm not 100% certain, but I think you find the card on the first floor of Ebro Tower. There is a card that is in a "Blue marked" room that is under a catwalk, so you may have missed it. If that isn't it, then it's at Upper Minefield in one of the shacks. I know that it should be found between the Drawbridge scenario and the second armory visit.
 
I just remembered another card location. I think there was one where the only way you could reach it you had to hang off the side of the walkway and shimie (sp?) towards it. It was on the second floor of Ebro Tower.
 
I'm just playing MGA for the first time, finally!

I'm quite sure you get the Level 2 Security Card
from Teliko after you meet up with Flemming in the building (Stage 07 - BRC-026). After the whole Hans Davis conversation.

Another way to take on the suspension bridge is to equip some Chaff Grenades which disable the cyphers for a number of turns (30 cost I believe). Just wait until they start to approach your start point, toss a chaff, and blast away with whatever you have. Toss another, and finish them off. Sniper rifle makes it MUCH easier though since it hits for so much damage.

Game starts out slow when learning how to play, but is a ton of fun afterwards. And I agree, it's definitely more of a turn-based strategy game than a card game.
 
The game is great initially, but bogs down real quickly real soon. Soon enough the game will start lagging even with 2-3 characters on screen. It just ruins the gameplay experience for me. So maybe you should skip this and get MGA2 when it comes out.
 
The TGS trailer for Ac!d 2 that's on the Metal Gear Saga DVD really has me pumped for Ac!d 2. I never finished the first one, but the second one looks to improve on a lot of the things that pushed me away from the first.
 
The slowness never bothered me, and isn't bad at all. Definitely worth playing in "Quick Mode" which speeds up the enemy movements/actions two-fold.
 
I played through a large portion of the game without understanding any of the symbols or the numbers. Could anyone explain that to me? Lol. I'd like to play again this time understanding the game.

The stopwatch and the...other things.
 
If I remember correctly, the stopwatch told you how many turns it would take before you could act again. Based on the cards you played, it would take longer and longer for you to get your next turn.

I haven't played in a while, so my memory is hazy. :(
 
Even in quick mode, I wish you could just hit a button and the enemies have allready taken their turn. I don't think I'd play this game if it wasn't Metal Gear, but collecting the cards is so fun. Who would've thought Johnny Sasaki's diarrhea card is one of the best in the game? :lol Having cards from other Kojima games is brilliant as well. Hopefully Acid 2 fixes the speed issues, with Acid 1 I'm just trying to beat it but Acid 2 I'll probably try for 100 percent.

Questions:
so how do I not have the level 2 card? Can you get rid of cards somehow?

how can I get Teliko to use weapons? I only seem to be able to give her equip cards.

how do the passwords work? I type in Jehuty, then load up my game and it's supposed to be there? I can't find the card, do I have to buy it in the shop or something? Also, are the special password cards something you're supposed to find in the game? I know Jehuty was known before release, so I wouldn't feel like cheating, but I don't want to get the other cards if I'm not supposed to.

does anyone play this like a stealth game? Like the regular Metal Gear games, I like to announce myself and take out everyone, it's just more fun that way to me.

It took me a while to realize that if in the Card Editor mode, if you just go to "Edit", then all the cards aren't there. Go to "Category" or something else instead, and there are a lot more displayed, including the Level 2 card.

After the first Teliko mission (in which you can only a pre-determined deck), she can use every weapon just like Snake (he can use the equips also). Make sure to make them available in her deck (FAMAS or SOCOM for example) in the Editor, and they should show up. Maybe you have allocated all those weapons to Snake already, with none left over for Teliko? Press Triangle in the Editor mode to switch to her and set it up.

I totally try to be as stealthy and quick as possible to earn bonus cards, but some missions require full out attacking. Nothing better than destroying a hallway full of clustered enemies with a Nikita or Grenade along with the chain reactions afterwards.
 
I did pick this up not too long after I started this thread and like the game a lot, even though I've never liked the MGS series.

Damn, forgot Acid 2 was this month. March is crazy for PSP; Samurai Warriors, Megaman Powered Up, MGA2, Capcom classics Collection....

March is crazy for everything.

My list of buys grows ever larger:
- Under Defeat
- Onimusha Dawn of Dreams
- MGS3 Subsistence
- MGA2
- Oblivion
- KH2

It's actually only going to get bigger.
 
Must buys- Kingdom Hearts 2, Tetris DS, MGS3: Sub, Katamari psp, Oblivion. Metroid Hunters and Acid 2 could well end up being on the list.
Interested- Burnout, Outfit, Blazing Angels, Dynasty Warriors 5, all for 360. Onimusha, Capcom Classics, Outrun psp, Untold Legends 2.
Hopefully I'll get a DSlite.
Yeah, March is like an early Christmas this year.
 
I've been playing Acid 2 (english version) exclusively as a handheld game for the past month or so and it's excellent. Fixes all the things that bugged me about the first game (although I still enjoyed it), essentially making it almost flawless. Ho, but it is still a very quirky game. If you like X-Com style tactics, then you won't really mind the fact that it's married to a strange, yet compelling random draw card battle system. The story is a bit better this time around too. Definitely pick it up.

BEST GAME ON THIS PIECE OF TRASH WE LIKE TO CALL THE PSP.
