Metal Gear... getting old.

... i demand my MGS3 back so i can finish the amazing last 4 hours...

seeing as Cormac won't give me the orgasmic RE4 back, i have to fill my time in some way ;)

why is it people who don't like the game are labelled haters???

i gave it a try, but it's just not doing it at all.
I'll try it again later, but so far GOTY

GOTY material for me as well

To the original poster: you haven't advanced past the initial mission...the game becomes the most gameplay-heavy MGS title after you complete the Virtuous Mission

The same could be said about Halo 2 so it just comes down to the type of game you consider fun to play.

No clue what Halo 2 has to do with any of this,but...Halo 2 added so much more than this game (Dual wielding, vehicle jacking,a multiplayer to end all multiplayers, etc.) and MGS3 for me added a much better story than 2 with a new setting. The camo/healing and all that was a hassle to deal with, navigating all the menus all the time. And the camera is so shitty, ugh, this is just a bad design choice, cinematic feel my ass.

But like I've stated many times,I enjoyed the game alot, mainly due to the story, because of the camera I never really felt I could utilize the gameplay mechanics to their full potential.

Yes, i am an idiot, or i just know when to recognize bad game design. I suppose i'll give the game another chance in the future.

However, your main complaints were not directly related to the core game design. You said that you were turned off by the amount of codec scenes and cinematics, which is something that becomes toned down significantly upon finishing the first mission...

I knew all the MGS3 praise would have to come to an end, and then the haters would take over.

People here on the boards, myself included, have mentioned that MGS3 is overrated for weeks. It's just that the Metal Gear Maniacs are so concerned about defending it that they flood threads about it. Where, people like myself who tend to think it's not as good really don't care enough to bother.

No one really "hates" the game. Most people can derive some quality entertainment from it. I just think that the series gets a free pass on things that other games get slagged for. It's a dinosaur in need of an ice age, but as long as it piles on the pointless rhetoric, over-the-top characters, and silly story they are willing to look past the issues.

People don't play MGS for cutting edge gameplay. That was proven by MGS2, which was a vast improvement in the gameplay department, yet was shunned by many because you didn't play as Snake. As someone who could care less about the characters in the series or its convoluted, downright comical story, MGS3 is an average game bolstered by impressive presentation.

The one aspect of MGS that gets praised more than anything else is its gameplay. Mainly because unlike many other stealth games, there aren't any real restrictions on how you can play it.

Not much longer till MGS3 hits the aussie shores, but i want to make sure its loads better than MGS2.

I replayed part of that game last weekend, and it would have to be one of the worst controlling games i have played, it felt twitchey and awkward. I just gave up, bored to hell.

I am trying to give this series a chance, but i cant force myself to play through MGS2. Is number 3 like a twin sister of 2 in terms of its controls ?

Yes the controls are technically the same. Don't bother. Also, who says people just play MGS for it's story? Bullshit, I'm not even going to bother.

How can you criticize MGS3 as having a bad overall design when you haven't even gotten into the best missions yet? Are you sure it isn't just the style of gameplay itself that you don't particularly agree with? Granted, I do agree with some of your criticisms (especially about the camo...) but I think it is a little harsh to judge the entire conceptual design of the game on a little lack of foresight by the developers. I hope you do give the game a change again in the future, because you're missing out on one of the best titles of the year.

Brace for spoilers. Help me understand this.

So let me get this straight, the Boss was:

The inventor of CQC
The person who "Won the war for the Allies"
The first American (person?) in space
Pregnant and had a baby on D-Day after parachuting in
Faked her defection but still gave away two nukes to a rogue faction
Sent to have Snake kill her but almost kills Snake like a billion fucking times

Yes, The boss and her group, "the cobras" won the war. They wrere that main foce behind the allies that made them win the war

She was also the first person in space, however, that was kept away from the public. The USA wanted to use a humanfor their testing instead of a chimp to make sure that their results were more accurate, so they used her.

Dont ask about D-day, he must have been smoking something when he came up with that.

To convince Volgin that she had defected, she had to give him a present. I guess a nuclear warhead is the best way of proving that.

She doesnt try to kill snake, its more of a test. Its the same with Ocelot

As for CO_Andy, I am considering putting you in my ignore list.

How about playing the whole game then making up your mind wether MG is getting old. MGS3 is so different to MGS1 and 2 that its hardly getting old, the game has been reinvented. The camoflague made the game so much better in terms of hiding and getting past enemies. Hving no radar but so many other gadgets to help you get past enemies. The CQC was fucking brilliant, for me, it was one of the biggest innovations in the game. Combat is so much better with it. i could keep naming the improvements, but MGS could go on for many more sequels until it starts getting old.
