Metal Gear Solid V announced (PS360, open world)

I really think Ishmael is imaginary and we are witnessing a Fight Club esque scenario. For all we know, Ishmael is planted in Big Boss mind by Mantis, who is then leading Big Boss to or away from danger.

But wait, how could Ishmael be driving the Ambulance car before the crash if he was imaginary...? Suddenly that theory falls apart. :(

The Raiden looking woman on fire just before he looks at his arm.

He threw that person out the window?

He threw that person out the window?

Well she went out of the window somehow. I'm not sure the exact words of the 'i, we' sentence, but I think it ends with 'she took the short way down', and the guy is standing next to an open window. They're on floor 3.

People will point to Fight Club and how they're both the same person. But the disparity of him being both able bodied and half paralysed at the same time doesn't fit very well.

You mean this part? If so, it doesn't look like anyone threw him/her out the window.

But it's still suspicious. If the horse ride with Ocelot took place after the car crash (as it seems since Big Boss is still in the hospital apparel, and is bleeding from his face), then what happened to Ishmael? He wasn't there when Big Boss crawled out of the Ambulance car, and thereafter.

You're right it looks like she just went out the window on her own. But the 'I, we' sentence directly refers to what happened to her.

Possibly died in the ambulance crash.

Possibly died in the ambulance crash.

But this begs the question; why would they get Keifer Sutherland to voice a character who dies within the first hour or so? This is a series that has never had any celebrity voices. Ishmael's either got to be a major character (either new or returning like Frank Jaeger), or, as many people have theorised, a figment of Big Boss's imagination created to lead him out of the hospital, giving way to the revelation that Keifer voices BB.

Possibly died in the ambulance crash.

That would be really sad. In that case, he may have simply been a patient at the hospital with cancer or something, observing Big Boss over the years.

Actually, one thing that really stood out to me from the gameplay footage is how little Ishmael does to help BB when he's crawling along. The guy's just come out of a coma he's been in for 9 years, he clearly needs a bit of a crutch to help him along, and you're just letting him deal with it whilst you scope out ahead? I just feel like everything in the scene supports the theory of Ishmael being a 'phantom', but hey, I've been wrong before.

"Let's take the stairs!!!" -runs off-

Yep totally agree, it seems very weird. It looks like Ishmael is just in BB's mind to push him forward.

I'm open to the idea it's him doing both voices, I'm not convinced yet, but if true it would seem to indicate there's something funny going on. Certainly the Keifer is voicing Big Boss theory wouldn't fit with the Keifer is voicing Frank Jaeger theory, but I don't think that's much of a theory anyway.
The use of fire in attacking the woman soldier could imply Mantis has been guarding him in some way, but he has a funny way of showing it.

Unless Ambulance cars can be driven from the passenger seat. It looks like Big Boss grabs the steering-wheel prior to the crash, but who's stepping on the gas pedal?

The fire is just hallucination from kid Mantis.

Does it matter? the character is called "GRAY FOX".

That's getting a little crazy though (IMO). If there was a character named Caitlin in a game, and someone spelled it Katelyn b/c they were more familiar with that spelling, I don't think it would be something worth shitting my pants over.

Well (and this might seem like reaching), in Fight Club the narrator sometimes imagines himself as Tyler, and sometimes as the guy watching Tyler. In other words Big Boss could be imagining himself in the passenger seat when really he's in the driver seat. If you see what I mean.

How awesome would it be though if we get a scene where Ishmael crawls out of the ambulance wreckage, with Big Boss nowhere to be seen. Ishmael then reaches up to his face and slowly removes the bandages to reveal....Big Boss. It would be perfect. Even better if his name flashes on screen: BIG BOSS (Keifer Sutherland).

But yeah, it's all theories and conjecture. What a mysterious and astounding trailer!

He could play a major role in Ground Zeroes and then dies in Phantom Pain.

Regarding Mantis fire, I think some of it is real and some of it is hallucination. We already know that Mantis burned down his village as a child so the idea of him using real fire isn't farfetched. Perhaps just the wild effects of the fire are faked. Dude likes to show off :p

That would be really sad. In that case, he may have simply been a patient at the hospital with cancer or something, observing Big Boss over the years.

If the game is really dealing with "taboo" issues like PTSD and disabled vets and the like, I could see Ishmael beeing just another soldier patient who happens to be a little unhinged himself. "I've--we've," not realizing BB may need help moving around, etc.

If this were the case (and I don't think it is), Kojima could be going for a Psycho (1960) vibe i.e. Big name star killed in the first hour.

Whoops... I forgot to add a spoiler alert...

Ishmael didn't inject him, Snake did it himself. Ishmael is a hallucination.

At the start of the trailer when Snake asks what happened to the woman, he says "we.. you let her go" or something. When Snake then asks who he is, he points towards Snake. They are both voiced by Kiefer at the start, the voices are identical.

Also, he never helps Snake during his slow and tiresome struggle to move, even though there's obviously need for haste. He seemingly turns Snake around after the explosion, but that turn could've been done by Snake himself as well.
He is also completely unphased at a levitating kid wearing a gas mask disappearing through the roof, and a fire demon extinguished by the sprinkler installation. Why? Because he doesn't see them. Because he isn't real.

Yeah Kojima, you reading this? I got you all figured out buddy! You reading this? Call me!

How did Snake go and pick up a syringe, then lay down, then try to get up and inject himself with it? Doesn't make sense.

He points toward Snake because he says he's been watching over him for the past nine years. In Japanese it makes sense that he'd point him exactly at that moment.

He doesn't help Snake because the player is in control, so it wouldn't work, it would interrupt things constantly and would be a huge pain in the ass do tech-wise. He helps Snake later in other cinematics, just as at the beginning.

Snake also doesn't say anything about the kid. It's possible only one of the two are seeing Mantis. Bandaged-guy definitely does see other people later in the sequence. So why not see Mantis? Probably because those hallucinations are for Snake only.

Moby Dick = Zero's creation, made to push Big Boss into becoming a "madman".

Why would Gray Fox still be bandaged up after watching over Big Boss for 9 years? Unless he watched over him, fought some kind of battle, got injured and hospitalized in the same hospital as Big Boss, and was back on his feet before Big Boss so he could lead him out. And why would he tell Big Boss to call him Ishmael?

I really think Ishmael is imaginary and we are witnessing a Fight Club esque scenario. For all we know, Ishmael is planted in Big Boss mind by Mantis, who is then leading Big Boss to or away from danger.

Frank later participated in the Mozambican Civil War, this time as a soldier for the RENAMO. During one of his missions, he was captured by FRELIMO soldiers and heavily tortured, having his nose and ears cut off.[3] He was rescued a few days later by none other than Big Boss.

The part that can easily be retconed is that Big Boss saved him around that time from something. In this case, Frank is in the same hospital after having being tortured (he has been keep watch over BB over the years was but was still active in the military). Then he and Big Boss escape when the place comes under attack. He tells Big Boss to call him Ishmael because he doesn't want to tell him right away that he's Gray Fox. Big Boss tried to give him a normal life before, BB might be a bit shocked if he was told that.

Also about the voice acting, IF it's all the same voice, it could be just because they don't have the American voice actors yet, so they just got one to voice everyone. Is Kaz even voiced by someone else? Everyone sounded the same in the trailer. They were probably not yet sure who to get on board until recently, if it's even decided at all. There was never an English version of the GZ trailer.

Ishmael is the XOF guy with burns all over his face. Double agent.

No. GZ takes place before that. Come on...

Also guys, remember Grey Fox changes his name to Frank Hunter at some point. Hunter = Ishmael.

Bandages = ninja mask.

Ishmael is the XOF guy with burns all over his face. Double agent. And he had a new arm attached. That's why there are bandages on his arm.

Better question is why is Big Boss still bandaged up after 9 years. But seemingly something's become lodged in his skull at some point during his coma.

I think that thing became lodged in his skull from whatever happened (explosion?) that caused him to lose his arm and go into the coma. Its probably touching parts of his brain so they decided its best not to attempt to remove it in case it caused further damage. I know it doesn't look like theres anything in his skull at the start, but its hard to tell due to the depth of field and stuff.

Why was he there for 9 years taking care of him and still has his face bandaged?

Edit: Has this been posted?

Is it just me or are the views for the new trailer disappointedly low? It's not even in the same ballpark as something like BF4 (expected, but still) and even way lower then GZ and Phantom Pain trailer.

I know views don't mean much, but I personally thought the trailer was absolutely fantastic and deserves more attention.

It's evenly split, ca. 300 000 views on gametrailers and youtube, 300 000 people watched the stream live and saw the trailer and the duplicatses, so.

I like the trailer but in the end it was more like a montage of all the trailers we already saw.

I wonder what direction V is gonna take MGO now? I liked the SOP system in MGS4's multi, but I dunno how they could justify it in MGS5 with this being a prequel and all.

I'm hoping Kojima does another trailer like the "Beauty and the Beast" one for MGS4. I still cant believe how many times I've seen that trailer. The main draw for me has always been the bosses, and I think he's off to a good start with the soulless ginger kid and ghost rider.

I'll need to go on media blackout if that happens. I feel like that trailer ruined a lot of the intrigue of MGS4 for me since I knew who all the bosses were going to be.

Ok, I've watched the trailer again & Ishmael seems to have a lisp

“I’ve been trying to make each Metal Gear more ridiculous than the last hoping people will get tired of it. Then again, people are legitimately excited for flaming unicorns."

lol

I hope you know that's a fake article.

So, has it been mentioned that Big Boss's replacement arm looks like (PW Spoilers)
Galvez's arm that he left at Mother Base?

It's red but the design is different and I believe it's on the opposite hand from the one Big Boss is sporting.

It's a deliberately similar look, whether.it's the same one with reorganised parts, or a new one, I don't know. I thought it might be a present from Ocelot as it's a Soviet design.
Unless Snake carried it at all times as a lighter, the first would probably be at the bottom of the ocean.
