Metal Gear Solid V: Gamescom Gameplay Demo

I can't get into this MGS4 shit three days in a row...

It's a very well designed handheld game.

Peace Walker was a blast, I sunk 70 hours into the HD version.

Noob question:

Didn't all Metal Gear "Solid" games have Solid Snake in it? Does this confirm that Phantom Pain has him too?

Negative, the Solid in the title didn't really refer to Solid Snake. There's been several MGS games without Solid Snake, mainly the ones focusing on Big Boss (LIke MGSV).

Some of you are coming up with some pretty valid theories. I'd love to see some of you organize synced-playthroughs so you can reconvene and discuss possible clues after every 5th mission or so.

I've got some DLC code still from my physical MGSV:GZ copy for PS4. Code still doesn't work - has there been any comments on this?

Metal gear solid 3 didn't have Solid Snake.

Fun fact. The "solid" in Metal Gear Solid doesn't stand for Solid Snake. Kojima uses it to reference the jump from 2d to 3d I believe.

2017 it'll be five years since we ran that poll, wonder where MGS5 will slide into.

I can live with those rankings, although honestly I like 4 better than 2.

.

Bite-sized missions. Stealth simplified because patience isn't something that works well in short play sessions. A good amount of content.

But I can see how the game design might seem a little bit shit if you played it on a console. I probably played Peace Walker over the course of a month, and that was enjoyable.

“This time Metal Gear is displayed in full polygonal form, and I used “Solid” to describe the cubic structure. also, the “Solid” means to the third power mathematically.you know, the company that does Final Fantasy. A square is a two- dimension thing. And I guess the president of Konami wanted this game to surpass Square. They wanted to make it a cube, you know, like solid 3D. So it’s got that meaning. too." - Kojima, 1999 interview

so its partially a jab at Squaresoft too, so hold dat

From IGN:

In the prequel to The Phantom Pain, Ground Zeroes included the ability to transfer save data that would not only cary over to The Phantom Pain, but would unlock content depending on certain fulfilled requirements.

These allegedly include
extracting Persons of Interest and Prisoners of War, which creator Hideo Kojima stated would transfer over to The Phantom Pain in terms of bolstering the Diamond Dogs staff at Mother Base. Other possible data includes having a Ground Zeroes save file to transfer over in the first place, and gathering all collectibles or getting S Ranks on every mission possible.

Confirmed rewards include the ability to return to Camp Omega in The Phantom Pain, unlock Snake's sneaking suit used in Ground Zeroes, and unlocking unique staff to bolster Mother Base development.

Ahh okay.......Was hoping this quote from Koji still holds true. It sounded big..

“People who own GZ will be able to play a different mission(s) at Camp Omega in TPP. That’s the current plan. There’s something of a big feature involved. It’s never been done in the games industry before. So I can’t go into detail about it, but I think when you experience it for yourselves you’ll be surprised. It’s something that’s only possible through video games.”

Man, if Kojima only knew then what he knows now.

Yeah, but Square Enix has ramen physics that probably has Kojima crying himself to sleep, so they got their payback in the end.

Ground Zeroes was such a breath of fresh air. Like, holy shit, this feels like what MGS4 wanted to be in the first two acts with the spirit of game feel from MGS2 and 3. I've already accepted MGSV's story will go well off the deep end into fucking stupid, because it's a staple of the series at this point. But in play it just elevated all my cynicism to total optimism. Seeing that one early mission from TPP replayed in five different ways cemented my belief this is a proper gameplay return to form, commitment to and evolution of the series design identity as a tactical stealth game.

If most of the missions are like that and the rest of the fluff doesn't weigh down the stealth design it'll be the best in the series since MGS3. And after almost 11 years it's well overdue.

Thanks guys!

And now, 16 years later, Square has been able to continue AAA development alongside other platforms, while Konami has MGSV as a swan song. It's a sad time for everyone.

Back when Ground Zero was first announced, there was a lot of backlashed about it being too short and played like a demo... etc. So I didn't get the game. However, I think as time went on, the opinion of that game turned more positive. Canadian Steam has this game at $20 CAD... Should I buy or not? I already got Steam version of TPP for free because of Nvidia.

As much I like just the act of playing the game and spent over 20 hours in it, no. The full game is out in about a week and after that the best part of GZ is overshadowed. I'm sure you can find someone with an extra gift copy who is either willing to just give it to you or sell it for a deep discount since every copy of TPP on Steam comes with GZ.

If you plan to play MGS V I would say yes go ahead, it's the prologue to TPP so yeah.

Story wise it is pretty important.

MGS 4 remastered on xbox one would still be shit

There ya go.

You can put a pig in make-up, you can get it a nice little black dress, some Jimmy Choo shoes, a Versace handbag, maybe even some nice jewellery; at the end of the day, it's still gonna be a fucking pig.

Well, it'd be nice if I can find somebody on GAF to do this with, of course. I guess I've yet to find a suitor ? Haha

Woah, today? Nice.

A couple of reviewers have already warned against reading reviews as there's apparently a major spoiler that some reviewers don't actually view as being a spoiler, but to MG fans it absolutely is. So it's likely just going to be thrown into reviews casually without any warning.

If someone yelled "Contact!" soldiers in the vicinity would be alerted. They might call in that a fellow soldier has seen an enemy, and an alert should be issued. But it wouldn't be instantaneous. It would propagate out from the first person until someone called it in on the radio.

So if a soldier yells "Contact!" and is taken down, and two other soldiers hear but are taken out before being able to report it to command, then there would be no alert. But it doesn't work like that in Ground Zeroes, and seemingly in The Phantom Pain also.

Apparently this is quite close to how it works in TPP. My example was basically just re GZ where it's instant. In TPP, a journo said if it's a small base a shout will alert the nearby soldiers in that base, but one of them still has to radio to main base to launch a region-wide alert and request backup.

Yea that's why the military makes everyone enable reflex mode in their game options whenever they do covert ops to counter it.

(Realism in of itself is a poor excuse for a video game, especially one where you can do things like use a wormhole to capture guards.)

Come on. No need to be facetious. I agree with you in general, and my point is that the insta-alert fits with the game's design. The developers clearly considered alerts working otherwise, ie MGS2 style, but for whatever reason it wasn't the best option for the game's design. Also MGS is notorious for impeccable realism in direct juxtaposition with absurdity. In this case, the shouting on a military base is a pretty realistic design element. Plenty of others arent.

Off topic, but I wanted to ask a question I have about Amazon if that's okay. I have the collector's edition pre-ordered. Does anyone know when it'll charge my credit card? It says two-day shipping and it's arriving on Spet. 1st. My concern is that two days from then would be a Sunday which the postal service doesn't operate on.

Does anyone have any experience with pre-ordering big collector's edition on Amazon? Did it come on day of release? I live in Connecticut if that helps; I know that the delivery times in some areas can be a little crappy.

It'll charge when it actually ships. It could be the day before, it could be the Friday before.

I don't think it's the same. As I understand it once a soldier in the base calls contact all of the enemies within that base are alerted, just like Ground Zeroes. Radio backup is for calling in enemies that aren't in the actual base (which I imagine is them spawing on the edge of the gameplay region and driving into the base).

It seems just like Ground Zeroes, but with enemies entering the base from outside of it to help if you don't stop reinforcements being called in.

I was only saying otherwise because one of the journos from the May event said it works exactly how I just explained it above. This journo said explicitly: If it's an isolated patrolling soldier - no alert, they handle you themselves. If it's one soldier in a small base - base is alerted, but someone has to radio to make it region-wide alert. If it's one soldier in a large base, ie main region base - everywhere is alerted.

But that was only one journo, and none of the others mentioned how it works. This could be total bullshit and you could be 100% right.

This wait is killing me, the closer it gets the more unbearable the wait is.

Glad Greg is doing a spoiler free review, I've been able to stay spoiler free so far despite the leaks and my lack of willpower.

Okay, who's sacrificing themself and taking one for the team?

I still believe there is something huge, you know how Kojima is ;)

Honestly, we've seen enough gameplay in the trailers so I don't really need to read the reviews to educate myself what the gameplay is like. With the release only a week away, I'd rather just play it safe and stay away from any written reviews.

Ok that's done it for me

I'm not watching any reviews, might glance at the scores but that's it.
