Metal Gear Solid V: Gamescom Gameplay Demo

Good grief, I couldn't care less about this game, then I watched the video in the OP. Day one. The invasion was the most enticing piece of gaming that I've seen in a while.

on PS4 it comes out of the DS4 speaker right?, i wonder if just lowering the volume will suffice.

This works, but only for those players who use external speakers. I use headphones [either wireless headphones whose WiFi base emitter is connected to the TV, or in-ear plugs that are connected into DS], which automatically re-routes iDroid audio to the main sound feed. :-/

Watching this gamescon demo where they talk about needing an interpreter to understand the foreign languages - is one of these available in GZ for extraction? I haven't extracted everyone but if there's an interpreter there I want to make sure to get him.

Now watch the E3 2015 Extended Gameplay to see the non Mother Base stuff, no story spoilers in it.

I would go insane if I had a robotic navi bugging me

Another bad part of it is when you want to play the game at night and don't want to wake anyone else that lives with you. Do they honestly not think of such scenarios? They better let us toggle it on/off for the love of nanos.

You find him in TPP, not GZ.

Everyone in GZ is speaking English, and in GZ Big Boss still has his full memories [he knows Russian in MGS3]. After 9 year coma and the trauma his brain experienced, he is way more silent, wants revenge, and needs translators.

I just don't get all the concern over an "instant alert" in Ground Zeroes. Even with reflex off you got a solid chance at taking them out with cqc or gunfire before they finish screaming contact. I recently did just that in a run. I got spotted behind a barricade and had enough time to get around it, close the distance, and cqc the guy without reflex. I should upload some videos of how much time you get. If the guy had to pull out his radio like they do when they spot a body or suspicious individual it would make the game far too easy for experienced players. And people new to the game would find it wayy more frustrating than reflex.

Soldiers only know the general vicinity of where Snake was last spotted, even during a full alert. Try getting spotted, fire at them a bit to get their attention and then slink off around them and watch what the AI does. You can often see them emptying their ammo into the area you were just at. You'll even eventually hear someone shout in a clearly frustrated way "hold your fire", realizing they don't have your exact location

And if you hate reflex you can turn it off and it doesn't break the game. The design accommodates no reflex just fine. You've got the marker system, and infinite magazines. With those two things If you play cautiously you should never have an unfair alert. You are given plenty of leeway, even on hard. Bolting on the old MGS2/3 radio system for being sighted would be the worst of both worlds for a game that plays like GZ and TPP. Wouldn't make it more accessible for new people, and would make it trivial for good players (and they couldn't turn it off like reflex either).

Does anybody know how difficulty will be handled in this game? (Can marked enemies be turned off? Seems way too easy)

Any rough estimates on length?

It could be turned off in Ground Zeroes, so probably.

Main story took people around
40
hours.

I really dislike the speaker on the controller, I always have it off. Such a dumb gimmick. The sound is bad, I can hardly hear it with my surround sound on and I mostly play with headphones anyway. I think a built in mic would have been much more handy.

I personally love it. I LOVED the sirens and cop radio that GTA V did with it.

Just a warning for you guys: Someone already updated the wikia with spoilers.
I wanted to check something about big boss in mgs3 and there was a spoiler right at the top of the page. -_-

Do publisher know beforehand what score their game will get? is that the reason why the review embargo is a week earlier?

Or do they just think the game will review good and they just have confidence in their own product?

That sucks, thanks for the heads up though!

I'm pretty sure its confidence + they have internal test reviewers that estimate the expected score.

LMAO i love this guy.

Consulting companies do what they call "mock reviews" throughout the process. Also internally, companies usually know if a game is good or not via play testing.

No one who releases a bad game is ignorant of it being bad before launch.

Oh and I thought of another reason a MGS2 style radio system wouldn't work with the way this game plays. The guards in that game being required to radio in for an alert was balanced by how the enemy immediately shot or kicked upon sighting the player, which put Snake in a hit animation that delayed stopping the soldier from calling in the alert. This hitstun gave them time to do so. There isn't hitstun in GZ for being shot, meaning shooting them or cqc-ing them would be trivial for most with these controls since there would be no delay. Adding hitstun to change this would suck, since hitstun in MGS2 made it feel unresponsive and clunky.

MGS3 didn't have that instant shot or kick with hit stun on Snake, but it also brought back the instant alert system upon being sighted to balance that. It was reinforcements that wouldn't come without being radioed in. So it's basically the TPP system on a smaller scale.

The game is day 1 no matter the scores, but I'm still really interested to see where they'll end up.

Fortunately Ground Zeroes got some pretty high scores from a few publications like Edge (9) Giant Bomb (8) IGN (8) Gamespot (8) so at the very least I expect them to score Phantom Pain at least higher, surely.

Whoa, there was one at the top of the page? I must've missed it! So lucky.

I was about to come write the same thing that I had gone to read something about Big Boss and I got towards the end and it started detailing TPP. Stay away!
