So I read some of the story so far. my brain hurts.
Does TPP have its own story that doesn't need much detailed knowledge of the other titles?
I'd probably at least read a summary on mgs 3 and peace walker.

No. It's pretty much a direct continuation of Ground Zeroes which is pretty much a direct continuation of Peace Walker.
About MGS3.
I think there's a missing cut-scene.

I started the game with the Raiden mask. So posing as Ivan was flawless. I was only caught because Volgin gets grabby.... However there is no alternative scene showing Snake and Sokolov being interrupted by Volgin without Snake having the mask on. I don't get it. Under some other circumstances other players had to play thru without the mask at all... so what did they see?
Pretty sure you always have the mask, whether he wears it at the start is decided by the choice you make before you enter the game, no?

All players have that mask in their inventory and you can't do that scene without it. IIRC correctly selecting the MGS2 option before starting MGS3 is what makes Snake wear the mask in the opening cutscene.

Unless he installed the game beforehand, or just the prologue and can't play any further, he's lying. Now we play the waiting game.
FFS.. more than a week to go, and already the douches will be out trying to spoil it for those of us that actually want to play the game properly.
All I can hope is to keep it to a minimum.. I won't go into total internet blackout, but I'll probably be staying away from most MGS5 discussions except probably this one.

Watched the Peace Walker movie on youtube (only Metal Gear game I've not played all of) and listened to the tapes etc and played through Ground Zeroes again. Really looking forward to playing MGSV. So much so I watched the MGS1 movie today and shall watch the rest of them over the course of this week. Actually very entertaining to watch - the mix of codecs, gameplay and cutscenes are cool. Very well done.

Him being evasive about the disc and the title screen is sure suspicious but if the game has reached the stores, i am sure they will break the street date regardless of what they say. In my country, there small shops who sell video games unofficially (which they bring into country unoficially). And most of those stuff come from middle east (Bahrain, UAE, etc). In Turkey, you can always buy video games 3 or 4 days earlier than release date. So, hang on. If the game really reached middle east, that means we will be getting streams, videos and info soon.
Ah good, because strangely enough not only is the prologue the one thing I no longer want to take a peek at anymore, but it's also the biggest thing I'm tempted to see more of.
Might tune in for one mission.

They received review copies. The version people played at the event did not include the ending of the game.
