Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain PC performance thread

4k maxed settings 60fps locked no drops

1600p max settings 110fps max 80ish average

1440p max settings 130fps max 118 average

1080p max settings 168fps max 147 average

I didn't do bench in the same place, like I didn't run the same place over and over again for each resolution so I guess it isn't an accurate bench but still well optimized.

Apparently this game is incredible optimized or incredible simple, even though my rig isn't exactly budget.

CPU: 5960x@5.6Ghz/little devil phase change
GPU: 980ti kingpin@1690/2008
RAM: 32 GB@3200Mhz
Installed drive: Intel 730 PCIe SSD 1.2TB

Edit: should note I'm not even on game ready drivers, in fact I'm on maybe 3-4 month old drivers I wonder how updating would affect performance.

Dude, your rig is a beast, the hell you talking about?

I mean....seeing this..

I'm on an:

4770k@4.2Ghz
EVGA 980Ti@stock
8GB Ram.

And I'm not seeing performance like that at all.

Are the overclocks providing that much of a performance boost? Wowza.

Not sure I have dual 980tis but I'm pretty sure only one is being utilized according to all the software, I only listed one because I figured only one was being utilized due to me using outdated drivers.

Edit: also I've found vram OC improves things a ton more than more so than core clock and cpu does in gaming with maxwell.

TWO? The fuck? Was your comment about your machine being mid-range a joke?!

(oh, oh wow. I completely misread what you posted. For some reason my brain read it as "my machine is budget")

Didn't say it was midrange said it wasn't exactly budget, kinda saying even if it wasn't well optimized is run if well, but it if and I am on just one card.

Edit: your edit beat me to it :p

Alright going from mother base to the ACC just brings me to a black screen and nothing happens that's cool....
Sounds like a good patch so far

Alright, verifying the cache and redownloading 2 files worth 3.4gb does nothing (which i presume replaced the DS4 controller modded lua and the FPS unlock lua or whatever). Disabling HBAO does nothing, hopefully reinstalling geforce drivers does something.

Wonderful, that also does nothing.

Trying in offline mode doesn't work, rolling back to a previous driver doesn't work. Great fucking patch Konami...

Only thing I can think is to reinstall the game but what the fuck

I love PC gaming

Lower the special effects option from extra high to high, although your video card should be able to handle that. *shrug*

Yea, I missed around with a whole bunch of settings (from lowering the resolution to disabling effects) and I'm almost certain that it's patch related.

There came a point when at 1080p with DOF and Motion Blur disabled, Effects on High and Post-Processing disabled, I was still dipping to 50-54 FPS at the mansion in Africa. The same FPS I get at 1440p on maxed out settings.

I've pretty much given up on it for now.

You have a build log or any pics of your rig? Sick setup mang.

I do on my pc, I'm on my phone at work I'll post them after work when I get home in the appropriate thread since im only a junior and probably have a short leash, which I'm guessing there's a show your rig thread somewhere here.

Maybe the Build A PC thread otherwise PM me.

The weird thing about those framerate drops below 10fps in the cutscenes is that my GPU would lower their clock, as if they are not fully utilized. Seems to that it's not about too much going on, but like the engine isn't handling things correctly.

With this latest patch I've definitely had reduced performance, from about 40-60 down to 25-50. Before the variable FPS option was discovered I played with the 30 FPS lock and I never saw it drop below 30 except for those specific spots during cutscenes that we all know. I've also seen a few weird flickering shadows that I never saw before this patch:

How the hell did you get the GPU that high? Is it also hooked to a phase change cooler? For most 980 Tis going over 1500 core is good.

For me on a AIO cooled 980 Ti, at 4K DSR it runs maybe average around 40-45 fps so I dropped down to 1440p (native res) and threw ReShade 0.10.0 on top with a slight sharpen filter that I've noticed gives me somewhat similar results to 4K DSR (sans the better antialiasing and performance hit).

Kingpins are badass.

Does anyone else get this weird like alt+tabbing occasionally in game? I don't know what's happening, I'm playing with an XB1 controller and occasionally the desktop comes up

The game doesn't crash or anything and I can alt tab back in but it's really annoying. Not sure what's causing it. I might disconnect my tablet while playing to see if that helps.

Yup, I get it, sometimes related to the Windows performance error asking me to turn off aero. Unlike you though I can only alt+tab back in probably 50% of the time without it just staying on a black screen causing me to reset my PC.

thanks. It makes a pretty big difference having fxaa off, everything really looks clearer. Downsampling from 1440p with everything on extra high, hbao+ and fxaa disabled. Getting a locked 60 with 2 970's and a 2600k@4.5.

Is it me or has windows 10 improved multi thread cpu use? I've had hyperthreading (bought in 2010) forever, but performance in open world games especially seems to have improved.

I don't know what to do. I've reinstalled my drivers, tried HBAO+ off, SLI off, Gsync off, online mode, offline mode. Nothing has any impact the performance is the same no matter what.

Performance has taken a dive and for no apparent reason. CPU and GPU usage are ridiculously low. GPU usage is so low that it's not even running at full clockspeed. CPU temps are barely above idle temps.
So far at least 4 people with the same performance anomoly. I wonder what is causing this.

You can add one more.

Performance dropped from a solid 60 fps to 40-45 fps since the last patch.

My specs:

i5-4690k
GTX 970

Same ingame graphics settings.

Edit:

It seem I found the culprit, and it's Post Processing.

A difference of 10-15 fps between Low and High, and 20-25 fps between Low and Extra High.

This has something to do with the last patch, because I was running it on Extra High with constant 60 fps before.

Wtf... hm. What OS are you on? I'm on 8.1 and I never seem to see an actual pop up after it happens, just the Steam window.

Dumbass question here:

I'm about to start playing the game this evening and I noticed everyone talking about a performance hit from the patch. Unfortunately I had auto-updates enabled so the 70.8mb patch from Steam downloaded yesterday. I don't think that there's anyway to roll back to pre-patch, but if I delete the game and reinstall will I be ok?

In other words, on consoles even after games are patched when you download them from the store you need subsequent updates. Does Steam work the same way or if I delete the game and reinstall would I still be stuck with the patch?

Not that it should matter for the question, but I'm running an i5-3570, GTX 970, 8gb RAM, Windows 10, installed to a Samsung SSD.

Better not be another fucking GTA V case where patches just make the game worse.

Well, since last patch im not crashing when helicoptering out of Mother Base.

Never had an issue in the 37 hours ive bene playing till now

I think this should be the best thread for this question: how long do you think will it approximately take for MGSV to get to around ~30$ on sales? What is the cheapest you could get it right now? Thanks!

Probably better to ask this in the OT rather than the PC performance thread, but probably not that long especially with GMG coupons. A few months tops before you're able to snag it at that price.

I think there should still be some NVIDIA codes laying around in B/S/T thread (or around the net in general), those should be the safest cheapest options currently.
Unless they skyrocketed above $40, dunno, haven't looked. Got my code from GAF's B/S/T thread.

Just for information sake, I'm not getting worse performance with the lastest patch. I still have pretty much locked 60 FPS with very rare dips on my 660ti with a mix of extra high and high settings at 1080p.

OK, Alo, I been playing with Low mod settings for over an hour now with no issue... Just set it to high and we'll see how it goes.

Might have been the update that happened that caused issues with the already installed mod. Time will tell.

I did some small tweaks and was messing around with it yesterday playing about 5 hours with no crashes.

I do think it was the lighting settings that caused it. It happened to me once where hitting the load threshold it loaded ALL of the shadow casting lights and crashed on Mother Base, but at that point I had it loading over 100 shadow casting light at distances of 20000, when the default is about 6 shadow casting lights at a distance of 200.

I'm conflicted because extreme should be "screenshot" style settings and you want that to be as high detail as possible, but I obviously don't want to be crashing peoples games.

I'll upload a more conservative option soon.

Edit: Updated Nexus Mods. Raised shadow resolution, lowered shadowed light rendering, and FXAA should be fixed.

Edit: Updated hopefully one last time. Under an extreme setting there was a crash, but I reduced the lighting config until crash was gone. Should be golden.

GPU: 980ti kingpin@1690/2008
wut.... how?

also, if you are running 4K at a sustained 60, your second gpu must be working. A single 980ti (even with that outrageous overclock) is not going to push 4k at a locked 60.

to test your gpu utilization I'd suggest downloading GPUZ from techpowerup.com and running two instances of it in the background while you game... the program tracks an array of gpu performance stats.

EVGA GTX 970
I7 4790k 4ghz
8gb of ddr3
Installed on an 840 EVO SSD
HBAO+ trick done

At 1080p, I get perfect 60 about 97% of the time. It only changes in some of the more foresty parts of Africa, at certain cutscenes that other people are having problems with as well, or if I walk into the smoke/dust trails that Quiet leaves behind as she leapfrogs around.

I can go higher resolutions as well and get pretty stable framerates, up to 2560x1440. That drops a bit more, but is still pretty stable. After that, it's not terrible, but a bit too choppy for my tastes. I can do 4k in the chopper while I chose missions/set up mother base stuff/watch Quiet do her moves, but once I get on the ground then the game becomes a too choppy to want to play with. I could lower some setting, but 4k doesn't look too much better to me than 2560, so I'm fine with the lower res. Damn fine version, I must say.

Gonna check it out. Haven't had issues at high yet.

Yeah I nailed it down to what seems to be Extra High lighting causing it, from rendering too many shadow casting lights. Sort of a bummer because when it doesn't crash, seeing all those shadows looks great.

Thanks very much for your tweaks btw, makes a great addition to the game!

I'm looking to implement SMAA instead of FXAA, what is the easiest way to go about this? Cheers!

In other news, is there anyway to force rain 100% of the time?

I just tried the updated mod from Nexus and my fps dropped to half. It might of been the update to the game that killed it because it was working fine before. FPS drop on extra high and high on sli GTX980.

Anybody having crippling FPS issues? I'm usually running at 60 FPS but I've had occasions where it'll drop to 1-3 FPS... this will happen if I alt-tab out and in of the game and it won't go away until I reset the graphics settings to default.

Using the beta display drivers for AMD.

I fixed it by going to another platform via box then leaving mother base :)

Well that didn't do anything for me :/

Alright sick I fixed it by using the Phantom Cigar, dropping the resolution and graphic settings down, and taking a box to another platform. Who knows what fixed it, but one of those did it for me.

FPS almost certainly will drop, depending on the scenario. I've found the biggest performance tanking to be when running out of VRAM, which running in SLI wouldn't alleviate. Extreme is mostly intended for locked 30fps on a reasonable PC, and I'm not sure how possible locked 60 is.

Try dropping some settings and see which one improves performance. Shadows, Lighting, then Models should have the biggest performance impact. Lighting has biggest hit at night, as you'd expect.

Theres probably a way to force rain, but nothing comes to mind from my looking through the files currently available to us.

As for SMAA, you should be able to inject it with Sfx 1.5.1 64bit version, but I've found it to be really unreliable whether it actually applies or not.

https://www.reddit.com/r/pcgaming/comments/3k3xzj/psa_if_youre_getting_stuttering_in_1_second/

I'm not sure if this is the same kind of 1 second stuttering that you're getting but you can try the stuff in the list, and the DDU fresh install to see if it helps at all.

Tried DDU, still getting it.

I notice that, when I get this, usually it's when something from the UI appears.

Like, I entered the area for a side-ops, I sometimes get that freeze.
A notification that I got resources from my base appears, it sometimes freezes.

It's really weird.
