is this on atomiswave? looks pretty cool - tho the backgrounds w/ sprite characters look awkward in some screens.

Ralf and Clark - awesome!

Exactly how much animation will you sacrifice for bringing a series like this into Hi-res? Who am I kidding I don't know why I expected a dramatic increase in character sprites once the series was moved from 13 year old hardware.

I considered buying this, but since a bunch of more intelligent folk in the PSP/DS threads say that 2D is for losers who still have mullets and bellbottom jeans, I'll pass. Got to get with the times!

I like giving stats to the avatars, something to differentiate them, though I wish they would go farther, possibly offering unique weaponsets and powerups to each instead. Unique endings with player variants ala Psikyo shooters of old would also be cool.

This is Atomiswave correct? The backdrops and certain explosive effects look distinguishable as not being MVS hardware. Not too bad though, someday I will buy MS4+5.

Ralf & Clark. Awesome.

The Atomiswave hardware gives a new feeling to the game but I hope they didn't change that much. I wonder if the stats that are given to the individual characters will actually have any major effect in-game. Could be some balancing issues. Looks great though. Can't wait to give it a try.

"Oh! Ralf can do his Vulcan Punch and Clark can do his Super Argentine Backbreaker. I must have mowed own about 15 foes with it once.

Pushing A+D, and A+C gives you an extra melee attack. The Ikari guys do their specials by pushing Up+D+A.

It looks like easy mode gives you the Heavy Machine Gun as a default weapon, and hard mode lets you use the pistol."

You can have two weapons at any one time. You can even throw a weapon out if you don't want it!

So far I'm diggin it.

All my hopes and dreams go to this games hooking me half as much as MS3 did.

Ikari guys, ok, but why not Leona?

That's the worst portrait of Fio I ever saw. That's below fan art even. Every other game they change their mind on whether Fio is plain or cute.

It was still a three button game even through 5. If it actaully adds to the gameplay, I can adapt, but I don't like it on principle.

Mixing the lo & hi res just doesn't look right. Hopefully it will be running at 60fps. I was hoping for mostly 3D backgrounds and hi-res everything because I know it's possible.

TOKYO--At the 43rd Amusement Machine Show taking place in Japan today, SNK Playmore showed off Metal Slug 6, which was on playable display at Sega's booth. The seventh installment in the series (if one counts Metal Slug X) is being developed for Sammy's Atomiswave platform, which marks Metal Slug's first arcade appearance away from the confines of the NeoGeo-based MVS arcade system.

Although SNK Playmore had previously announced it was working on a 3D version of Metal Slug for the PlayStation 2, Metal Slug 6 sticks with the series' traditional side-scrolling 2D formula. Despite the additional processing horsepower provided by the Atomiswave, the graphics in the game seem fundamentally similar to those in previous Metal Slugs.

The demo at the AM Show only allowed for the first stage to be played, but there was a noticeable lack of gameplay slowdown (even against the huge bosses), which is a definite improvement over the outdated MVS platform. There were also some changes with the game's controls. In addition to the A, B, and C buttons that were respectively used for shooting, jumping, and throwing grenades, Metal Slug 6 uses D and E buttons. The D button is used in combination with the A button to do a special close-up attack (which seems to be different from the automatic knife slashes when an enemy is nearby), and it can also be used in combination with the C button to throw away the weapon you're holding, while the E button is used for weapon changing.

The biggest surprise in Metal Slug 6 is probably its character roster. In addition to the usual selection of four soldiers (Marco, Tarma, Fio, Eri) the game features Ralf and Clark from the King of Fighters series. The new enlistees even have their trademark attacks from KOF: Ralf can pull off rapid vulcan punches when you press on a combination of buttons, while Clark can flip enemy soldiers into the air with a super Argentina backbreaker.

Apparently they've forgotten about Ikari Warriors.

Ralf and Clark are cool but the backgrounds don't compare to even those of Metal Slug 1. They look all artificial with their garaud shading and shit.

upscaled low-res sprites on hi-res backgrounds give me the horrors. ugly ugly ugly. but metal slug 5 was fun, and i can't argue with ralf and clark. bring it on, i guess.

I had high hopes but i don't like the look of this at all. It'd be very hard not to remove the balance of the game with extra moves. Particularly as different characters have differing moves. And extra buttons seem to go against the Metal Slug ethos. The character sprites look poor and the backgrounds uninspired. Shame.

yeah, i don't know if i like the sound of command melee attacks. or stats, for that matter. ("def?" does that mean lifebars when you're on foot? :x) but there have already been six metal slugs, and it's obvious that playmore is never going to top the original snk games, so they may as well try something different.

I was still under the impression that the next Metal Slug game was in 3D from some screens I saw ages ago.

Damn, is this ever a pleasant surprise.

We've seen lifebars used for the on-foot sections in the handheld Metal Slug iterations but I really hope they keep it out of MS 6. I doubt that playmore will be able to top the original Metal Slug games but it is pretty cool to see them trying some new things. Hopefully these new things wont change the game all too much. Especially the ability to hold two weapons and switch them and the on-command melee attacks.

The stats don't make any sense. Fio and Eri have identical stats, both being superior versions of Marco's stats which are shit compared to everyone else's stats (everyone else has one long stat meter, he only has a marginally bigger Power meter). And this is just my own personal nitpicky observation, but why do all four guys have basically weak Power while the two girls have it good? There also isn't much variety in stats among the six. Everyone (minus Marco) has one good bar, while the other two bars are low.

There's only 2 levels of Defense. I'm thinking everyone except Tarma can only take one bullet, but Tarma, who has 2x the defense of everyone else, may be able to take two. It won't be so much of a leap that way.

This is quite possibly the ugliest game I've seen recently.

Yeah, yeah, 2D's expensive, but I still can't help but be offended by these screens.

that's tarma. ralf has the bandanna on. and being able to take more than one hit is for PUSSIES.

Looks like a lot of fun:) But it won't be better than 3,2, x or 1, i think. Ralf and Clark is a great addition, but is the different character stats a good addition?
Anyway i'll be picking Fio as always :lol

for people wondering about the graphics

high res 2D backgrounds

low res touched up sprites

new effects.

think of this game as Metal Slug: Neo Wave

and truth be told... the backgrounds make the sprits look out of place... the thing about MS1-5 is that the stages matched the sprites so it all flowed well graphically.

now... meh.

i got to see more.

Sprites have looked out space with backgrounds since MS4. New guys just don't have the same art talent as the original team. This one is probably the worswt offender actually. It's literally looking like some fan project now where someone painted some backgrounds and stole all the sprites from Metal Slug :\

What the hell is with the character art?

Fio :((((
T_T the artwork is sooo horrible. Fio looks like a man! Doom!!

This version of Metal Slug looks baad. The high-res mixing is especially unwelcome here.

What's with all the high-res backgrounds/UI? Only the sprites seemed to have remained low-res. What hardware is this using?

I'm pretty sure it's Atomiswave (Naomi/DC). *too lazy to check*
