It'll always be Load and Reload for me since that's when I really started paying attention to and liking them as a kid.

Also my mom was a huge fan of "Hero of the Day" when it came out and also was pretty strict on what I listened to, so her liking that song unlocked the door for me to listen to all of their stuff. But Load and Reload were the ones that paved the way.

Bleeding Me, Aint My Bitch, Outlaw Torn, Better Than You, Attitude, Wasting My Hate... such fucking bangers

Is there anything worse than Metallica fans that only like their early work and think everything else is shit post And Justice for All? You nutjobs are as bad as hardcore Tool fans.

Rock on bro lets listen to Seek & Destroy again :pie_eyeroll:

Don't get me wrong I love stuff like Orion, but I was fucking 14 when I discovered the band in 1996. Cut me some slack man!

Yes, it's mid-life crisis Metallic trying a failing to reinvent themselves with nu-metal inspiration. The lyrics are basic and repetitive.

But it's the drums man. Holy shit Lars wtf was u doing? You need a bottle of advil to listen to it. I'm not joking.

Edit: to add to the above — awesome riff here ruined completely by shitty lyrics and Lars banging pots and pans.

I'd say Load/Reload were the mid-life crisis and the band's newfound style inspired this:

I can't imagine going into the studio after the Black album. Love it or hate it, it put the band into a new stratosphere and following it up must have been a daunting task. While that combination of albums has a lot of low points, there are a lot of quality tracks too (probably enough for one great album instead of two good albums), but it feels more like an introspective side project of Hetfield more than what we'd expect from Metallica at the time. St. Anger felt like they were out of ideas and James/Lars letting the other band members be more involved in song writing was the ultimate "fuck you" to Jason who left the band because that duo were massive cunts about his side project and all he wanted to do was be more creative. It being so abysmally bad is proof that karma exists.

Don't worry, It's fine, I like songs on Load and Reload as well, including Hero of the Day.

It's just that those albums represent when they tried to chase mainstream, so it's obligatory to hate it for Metallica fans.

Tool fans catching strays in here.

They'd already caught the mainstream by the time Load happened. Holding onto the mainstream might be more apropos even if I'd quibble with the assessment.

I remember when this came out, people tried to argue that it made it sound "rougher", like a more trash metal sound.

But those drums ruined the album, it's so odd to listen to now. They desperately wanted to be younger and wilder, but just look at Some Kind of Monster, they are spoiled middle ages guys who sell paintings and cry about feelings.

Yeah, they wanted to continue being invited to award shows and being MTV darlings.

Also, they grew up. Looking at interviews when they first started out, they were absolute morons, which somehow translated to epic music, but they changed a lot when they got older.

Yeah like when Mike Inez wrote on his guitar for the AiC Unplugged "Friends don't let friends get friends haircuts."

And I liked em with short hair too!

It's so mid-late 90s lol Kirk looks great with short hair like that I think

James does seem like an incredibly shitty person, but I'll give a bit of grace considering he was raised in a Christian Scientist household. I think that documentary you referenced had him skipping out on his daughter's birthday party so he could do some exotic hunt across the world and he couldn't figure out why his wife was upset with him. That after taking on one of the most grueling tour schedules a band had ever done. I'd say the same about Lars but wouldn't give him the same grace. They taught me a valuable lesson about hero worshiping and they are a huge reason that I want to know the art and very little about the artist.

He went to Russia or Siberia or some shit to drink their vodka and kill bears :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Sounds about right. I wanted to say Russian/Bears, but the only thing I remember about that documentary vividly is that god awful sweater their group psychologist wore.

Dude he was attempting to help write lyrics for the album :messenger_tears_of_joy: Truly a cringe as fuck moment. That and when Mustaine confronts Lars.

Gotta admit though, can you imagine how much bank the therapist made working with them? Sure they gave him the boot, but he collected big time.

I've not listened to a full Metallica album. I know their radio hits. So I didn't vote.

Is St. Anger as bad as people say? I remember there being a bunch of kerfuffle about how they stole System of a Down's style with it and that Metallica were being phonies.
Most of the hate is warranted but it has its moments. Fixing up Lars' drumming helps... A LOT

Jeez every snare hit goes "BOWwwww". It's robotic and distracting. Makes me appreciate the effort put into drum tuning/mixing with the fact this is a rare example of how bad it can go.
