Meteos vs. Lumines - winner?

Lumines. Really I would have never thought it. I was just thinking about this the other day and I really like Lumines better.. here's the odd thing though, Meteos is SUCH a better game. really, just better designed, quite a bit more depth, and just all around better than lumines in all ways except for music.

so why do I like lumines better? Because I have always been one of those guys who likes just vegging on puzzle games. give me tetris and 40 minutes and I'm in heaven. Meteos unfortunately can't do this (that I have found). a few minutes before the action gets crazy and that's it. lumines you can sit back with and just have a good time for a while.

also it should be noted that while I think Meteos is a better actual game than Lumines, Lumines is still better than almost every other puzzle game out there (besides meteos). I love both games, and even though I think Meteos is better designed (and I love it also), I like the ability to sit down with Lumines for a long time and go through the levels (And hear the awesome music).

Lumines sessions take too long, 2 minute time war is where it's at. Have to play meteos for highscores for it to be good in the long run. (Like 2 minute time war, the only mode the game really has :))

no, it's not the aesthetics. It is the 30+ minute play times. right when I start getting into a rhythm on Meteos the level becomes unplayable. as I said, I love the game. gameplay easily trumps lumines, but when you start having fun it's all over. :( definitely the better of the two as far as pick up and go is concerned. but for someone who love tetris, puyo pop or the like, lumines gives you longer play time.

my scores would be all higher gameplay, graphics, and presentation for meteos; higher sound and tilt for lumines.
 
Lumines has far, far better style and music, but ultimately I play Meteos more. The game is more fun. So it has to get my vote.

I don't like the fact that whenever I'm playin' Lumines it feels like I've gotta sit in front of it for at least an hour. With Meteos it's more entertaining to play short and longer games. So overall: Meteos.

Meteos gets my vote, though, because of the shorter time commitment. Lumines is great fun but would work better as a console game.

I must have played this over and over for two weeks in a row. Best mode in the game by far. I kind of stopped trying to beat my high score once I filled all of the spots with more than 100,000. I'm not even sure if that's good, just needed to move on at that point.

Anyway, Meteos over Lumines since I've only played one of them. If that isn't definitive, I don't know what is.

True... length wise Lumines is almost illsuited for a handheld tho. Miz should really consider a 360 Live Arcade port imo.
 
Lumines is the initially more impressive game, it's great.. until you hit 999,999 and unlock everything and you realize that there's no way to play the game in short bursts, you keep going for hours when you're good at it.

Meteos, on the other hand, has alot more to offer. You won't master it in the first time and even when you're good at it.. you won't be able to keep going for hours and hours.

Don't get me wrong.. I love Lumines, it's just that it kinda dies on you after a while. But Meteos just keeps on giving. Having high hopes for Lumines 2 though.
 
Why don't you make a thread and name it "DS vs PSP" and see if the results change even in the slightest, i bet they don't :p

I have both, and I love both (Meteos is my fav DS game, and Lumines is up there for the PSP), but IMO, it's just no contest whatsoever; Lumines is truly the better title. If both titles were on the same platform, I'm 100% positive this mini-console-war-in-disguise wouldn't even exist, as it would simply be common knowledge that Lumines is the superior experience.

Surprise! Surprise!

I think I'd have honestly enjoyed Lumines more had GAF not trumped it up into the second coming. As far as launch period PSP games go, Ridge Racer, Hot Shots, Untold Legends and MG AC!D all smoke it imo.
 
lumines, because i like the way, you can play longer than 2 minutes and i love the music / presentation.
 
Meteos is the only game to make proper use of that dumb stylus so far. While the complaints against it are justified (especially vs Lumines), the stylus gameplay brings such an incredibly large amount of intensity that I'm almost glad the game plays itself out in spurts, else I'd burn out from focusing too hard.

whoa.. I highly doubt that. Meteos is pretty much better in almost every way that matters IMHO and others'. My personal complaint with meteos is that I can't go on for 40+ minutes on a single board. But as far as which game is better designed, I think it's impossible to argue that Lumines is better than Meteos in any area except for sound.
 
I couldn't get into Lumines and I got bored with Meteos after ~ a month. I go back to Meteos every once in a while for a quick distraction, that's about it.
 
I own a ds only and have to give it to luminies.

Playing it for an hour for 1 game is actually an attractive feature for me. listening to a tv show that others were watching while playing lumines with THE SOUND OFF was fun.
 
I played both (for the record)

and liked Lumines, not very much but I thought it was ok.

Untill I played Meteos, it just works so much better in my opinion.

I know i'm not very good with puzzle games, but Meteos makes a little bit more sense to me than Lumines.
 
I think Lumines is a rather average puzzle game with great presentation. Its an enjoyable experience but Meteos is just simply a better GAME.. I actually preferred Lumines at first but after playing both for a substantial time I prefer Meteos more and more.

Panel de Pon/Tetris Attack trumps both though.
 
Lumines by far.

I like the fact that you can enjoy Meteos in short periods (well, you can always put the PSP on stand by and enjoy short Lumines sessions), but everything some of you say about Meteos being more complex and having better gameplay, I find it the opposite. Meteos felt much more like an action game than a puzzle game for me, and I never felt like I could improve my game as much as I could in Lumines.
 
I like both of them, but I just LOVE synthetic music, so Lumines for me. It just looks like AAA+++ title, meteos is something like B+

I've heard the exact same argument used for Virtua Fighter versus Tekken before. Don't mistake learning curve for depth.

The simple fact that you can randomly and frantically scrub the screen and quite frequently get yourself out of a jam in Meteos is a significant fundamental flaw in the design of the game, and that alone (though it isn't the only reason why) makes Lumines a better title IMO.
 
rubbing the screen, while it certainly can save you for a couple extra seconds here and there, is hardly broken mechanic. one thing I've found in meteos is that if you are at a point where you are needing to frantically rub the screen, you are probably going down not too long after that, even if rubbing the screen buys you a few extra seconds.

it goes back to button mashing in a fighting game. the fact that you can beat matches by mashing buttons does not necessarily make a fight game bad. nor does the lack of being able to mash buttons necessarily make a fight game good. same thing with meteos. frantically scrubbing the screen is a "tactic" that will only get you so far. you will need real skill to take you the rest of the way.
 
If I had to choose one, it would have to be Meteos. My entire summer was all about Meteos, I was totally addicted to it. Lumines didn't give the same feeling.

Both are great games though.

the one thing I love about lumines is that IMHO it truly represents PSP. Even some of PSP's "best" (not according to me, but others) games are just console games shrunk down to portable size. But Lumines was something different. It was a game that was very much a handheld game, but at the same time carried all the gloss and presentation of a fullblown console game (FMV, high quality digital audio track, etc).

to me there hasn't been a "handheld" game on the PSP that has lived up to it yet. sure there have been other good (great) games, but they all carry that "made for the console then shrunk down" feeling to them. Lumines represents the game it seems where somebody said "a handheld like the PSP needs this game."

meteos is just simply the kind of game you expect to see on a nintendo handheld. :P

I disagree with your last sentence, and your contradiction exists (too much phoenix wright) in your first sentence. damn straight the game puts you into a trance. and when you go to sleep mode you pretty much lose that entire groove to come back to. Lumines in short bursts is pretty weak. luckily I like playing longer sessions of puzzle games.

This is not true at all. Don't talk down on a game you don't know in depth enough, there is no way scrubbing will get you anything close to a good score. The game is much deeper than you initially think and I'm still stunned by how much one can improve by practicing. Initially I wasn't able to do screen clears at all while now I can do it constantly. Still working on being able to do it while holding the speedup button without dieing before the 2 minutes are over.

The best part about the game is that you can almost execute your moves as fast as you can think contrary to dpad controlled puzzlers where you control the field instead of single objects (like in tetris). This makes it possible for the game to have a learning curve that ends much much higher than other games.

I love it.
