Meteos vs. Lumines - winner?

i'm going to bookmark this thread for when I get a PSP(hopefully this week ^_^) to give a clear opinion however....

to the people that said meteos is boring I ask you then, what the fuck entertains you? and there was another poster that said there is no variety in Meteos stages :lol wtf? did he even play the game? none of the stages in Meteos are the same each stage has their own meteos and gravity.

Meteos is the better game. Lumines is the better experience.

The design of Meteos is unparalleled if you ask me. There are 32 different planets with wildly different gameplay environments, yet all of them pretty much balanced against each other in single and multiplayer. It's a time trial/high score kind of game, which is awesome. When I cracked 200,000 points for the first time, I was as happy as I've ever been with a game for a while.

Lumines is like an evolution of Tetris, where you keep going until you can't, or don't feel like it anymore. The soundtrack keeps you locked in on it, though. I find the core gameplay to be somewhat limited and repetitive, but the music and endless gameplay keeps it afloat just fine.

You can't go wrong with either one, but it should be pointed out that you need to pay $300 to play one, and $160 to play the other. I don't think Lumines is $140 more worth it. :|

edit: Oh, and for those who are complaining about the "scratch" exploit, you're all making a bigger deal out of it than it really is. You can't use it to attain high scores anywhere near those of a pro. The button mashing analogy is spot on, really.

jarrod does.
No I don't. I just maintain the real core appeal of the game (like most stuff from Miz post Sega Rally/Manx TT/STT) is rooted in aesthetic. Sonyborgs evidently have a hard time telling the difference.

Sure it won't win her the game, but it's hella more effective than randomly pushing buttons in VF4.
Depends on the character. You'll get a whole lot farther mashing with Lion than with Akira.

In VF2 my little sister could beat the game by mashing with Lion actually. Even VF isn't above mashing to victory.

Meteos is a brilliant game... I've invested more time in that DS game than any other. Anyone that thinks "Scribbling" ruins the game probably based it on a few reviews and haven't actually played it at all.

I've tried single-cart multiplayer... didn't really find it all that fun though because my opponents absolutely sucked. I won every time. :/

Having said that I have not tried Lumines, i'm sure they're both good games.

I haven't played lumines so i wont comment but i've thought meteos was somewhat inspiried by yoshi's cookie... you grab a cookie and slide (left/right or up/down). The difference is meteos shuffles single items whereas yoshi's cookie slides entire rows/columns.

Yoshi's Cookie would be a hundred times easier with the stylus!

yoshi's cookies has nothing to do with Meteos IMHO. Yoshi's Cookie's is a Puyo Pop type game. Meteos is.. well, like nothing else I've ever played. Yes you align colors to clear blocks, but the whole launching/"realigning launched blocks"/"shooting blocks to a launched section" thing really makes the game unlike anything else as it alters gameplay drastically.

lumines is the tetris model refined to possibly the pinnacle of gaming.

meteos is deeper because it has a lot more going on during a session. more blocks dropping (vs. one at a time), more ways to clear blocks, and really quite a few types of strategies you can employ. lumines is pretty much "set your blocks in a pattern and go for the big combo". Meteos has many more options than that.

Lumines is shallow, simplistic and way, way too fucking long. Cool music, sounds and style though. It's a great example of style over substance, and a nice easy puzzle mechanic so that any idiot can play for a long time and think they're good at it. It's like Tetris with three pieces, on acid.

Meteos is short, unrewarding, and frustrating. But a nice design and excellent control. My big gripe is that no matter how good I think I'm doing, I pretty much die at the exact same time, every time, on each different setting/world. The difficulty ramps up too fast, until suddenly, you're dead no matter what. I don't consider playing a game with the goal of not dieing for an extra 10 seconds to be very satisfying.
In VS. mode, it's a variation of the same problem. I either kill off the CPU worlds with little threat to myself, or die under an impossible barrage, with nothing in between.

In other words, neither game gets a vote from me. I think the studio needs to try again--third time's the charm. Meteos is the better game, so with any luck their next one will hit a better balance.

I used to like Lumines. Heck a few days ago, I spent hours playing it.

And then I played my bro's 360, and played some Live Arcade.

Now...Hexic...heck even Zuma seem like far better puzzlers. I tried playing Lumines again, and was...bored!

sorry to bump this old thread but since I have both now I can give my opinion

Meteos ultimately wins this. As much as I love Lumines right now, Meteos can be played without fear of taking you much time. 30 minutes of gameplay of Lumines are like 10 or so to me the game is very time consuming.

that said I love Lumines more, the music and style trumps over Meteos and once you are really into the game and start doing awesome combos is like shit NOBODY IS STOPPING ME.

I love them both though and I can't wait to play Meteos when I buy my DSlite :D

i tried giving Lumines another go last night .... but I just don't have hours to plug into a handheld game over the last years, wish i could but i don't....

Meteos is good good 'get in, get out' kinda handheld fun ...... and you always walk away with unlockables, that keeps me commin' back.

I'd love to love Lumines the most, but it's much more mantenance and requires more nursing than Meteos.

Why do they have to directly compete, again?
one is for PSP the other for DS... both made by the same company.... do you need anymore help?

Both are very different games. One game's pro is the other game's con, which is strange.

I have both, Meteos doesn't even feel like a puzzle game, its not really is it? Its more action with a touch of strategy.

With Lumines I'm learning tricks, combos, strategies etc and it feels like a puzzle game, and a good one at that as I'm not a great puzzle fan. I do dislike having to start from the beginning everytime though just to unlock maybe one new skin I have to play for so long!!

Meteos however is a unique experience, genius in how its so simple, so intuitive and still so frantic and tense.

Both games are amazing, I rate them both as quality examples of their genre alongside Tetris and Tetris Attacks.

I played Lumines more, but that's probably because it was one of the few PSP games I enjoyed early on.

Meteos came out, and it didn't catch me... and then Kirby:Canvas Curse arrived, which was awesome and I sorta didn't came to continue trying to "get into" Meteos.

Lumines for long term play and Meteos for short.
And both get muted. The music in Lumines distracts me if anything.

Tough call. Both games are magnificent and at or near the top of the list in terms of quality games for their respective systems. I will have to give the slight edge to Meteos, however. The gameplay is engaging and very, very intense.

Lumines. I love the presentation, and the head to head matches are AWESOME.

i have yet to play meteos(dont have a ds) but i have wanted to play for a while now. i do own lumines though

on a separate note, this place loves ds vs psp threads, huh?

Lumines = Awesome style and awesome gameplay
Meteos = WIGGLE TEH STYLUS AND I WINS!!!!!!!! WEEEE!!!!!

Yes, you don't "have" to play Meteos like that, but playing Meteos is like boxing with a 4-year-old, if he's pissing you off you just clobber him and move on to the next round.

I think you're overstating that. It may work, but it's just luck that makes it work. It's certainly not a perfect strategy.

Lumines - awesome music, dull gameplay

Meteos - interesting basic music & sound, deep gameplay offset by fast-pacedness which makes random rubbing often times more effective than playing the game for real

My vote reluctantly goes to Meteos. It's great, but its ease of cheese makes it hard to take seriously as a mp game.

Why are people complaining about the time commitment required for Lumines? Tetris is no different and it consistently finds its way atop most "Best Ever" lists.
