Metroid Prime 1 or 2

Just finished Metroid Zm for the fourth time and decided id burn a gift card on a Gamecube copy I got Prime 1 when it was released but didn't really have time to play it.
I do remember not liking it that much.... but then again im the type that plays games he's into at that moment and I was not into Metroid at that time.... I want the one thats closest to the 2d metroids...

Play Prime 1 and if you want more, move onto the sequel (which isn't quite as interesting IMO).

Metroid Prime is a total other difference compared to the original metroid franchise (2d)

you can like the 2d metroid but dislike prime, you can dislike the 2d metroids but like prime... (although I'd like to know who dislikes the 2d metroids xD)

Metroid Prime was IMO technical stunning, still got to buy Metroid Prime 2.. but I'm not excited to play it: it looks like it's more of the same, meh.

Give the original Metroid Prime however many chances it takes. You won't be sorry.
Hopefully then you'll want to move on to the somehow even better looking sequel.

When you do get to the second one, the dark world and bosses will have you pulling your hair/scalp right off of your head.

I liked Prime more than Prime 2. Could be due to the fact that I got a lot of Disc-Read-Errors while playing Prime 2...

Anyway, get Prime 1 first. If you want more after that, get Prime 2 (you can see it as some kind of "Mission-Pack").

just play prime 1 now

prime 2 will proably hit $20 soon anyway. or if you dont have a cube, get a cube at target next week for $97. they're bundling it with metroid prime 2 for free

You know I really liked both but I'm gonna have to agree with everyone else here and say grab prime 1 first and if you like it go on to 2

the thing with 1 was that it was so new and fresh and just amazing and unexpected you just can't get that same feeling a second time around, plus the area design (baring the final area in 2 which is simply amazing) is better in 1

Both games are fantastic but the price of the original is better than echoes, I think the choice is easy, wait till the price drop on Prime 2 to get it as it can't be that far off now.

Prime's one of the best games of the generation, IMO. Echoes starts out interesting, but the annoying "find all 20 keys to finish the game" concept ruins it.

get prime 1. Prime 2 isn't quite as compelling (still it's probably the 3rd or 4th best cube game)... if you like 1, wait a little while and play through 2, you don't want to play it too soon because they're both very similair and you'll get a "been there done that" feeling. wait till you're in the mood to replay the first one, and THEN play the second one. Also it's better to play them in order because the storylines intersect.

If you give metroid prime some time you will find that it has all the elements from the 2d games... the structure is identical, it has platforming, probably the best 1st person platforming i've ever seen... it has exploration, puzzles, an expansive world with no levels and no load times... It's incredibly immersive, has great music. awesome boss fights, a perfect challenge.. IMO it's nearly a perfect game and it's my favorite game of this generation.

Echoes is very similair... it's a bit more linear feeling, but still very non-linear... it's a little harder, the maps are more confusing, and the dark/light mechanic can get a little obtrusive. also it feels more like a side story, while the first one feels like a typical metroid story, along the lines of metroid and super metroid.. Still it's a really awesome game, and it only suffers in comparison to the first one.

Prime 2 added things that gave a nice Metroid touch that the first Prime was missing. Colored doors similar to Super Metroid, Screw Attack...but I have to agree with the others that Prime 1 was probably more enjoyable.

Both games kick ass though.

I got to 100% on Prime. Prime is awesome just for the environments alone. Haven't touched 2 but did see Prime going used (but in mint condition) for $9.99 where Prime 2 went for $44.99 used. For price alone, the first one wins out. Then wait a year and get Prime 2 for just as cheap.

I might snag the first again and play through that again. Its been a couple of years.

Trust me, bub! Play MP 1 first and you'll be amazed!

If you went ahead play MP2 before MP 1 then your novelty wears off. You won't be floored for the first time when you see MP 1.

I haven't played MP2 yet, but definitely get MP1. I feel like MP should have just been one game and thats it. Retro should have moved to some new franchise :(. I really hope MP3 is not the only game they have for us with Revolution.

I personally thought Echoes was better, but I don't really think you can play it without playing Prime first. So just get Prime now and get Echoes later on (when it hits $20 maybe? it should soon).

If you really like the 2D Metroids, there's a very strong possibility you'll love MP and MP2. I'll admit my response is a little tainted, since Metroid is my favorite franchise, but I adored Metroid, Metroid II, and especially Super Metroid, and Metroid Prime totally blew my socks off. Honestly, it's the most fun I've ever had going through any video game. I think a big factor in that was nostalgia, because of the 8-year gap between Super and Prime, and the appearance of so many of the same items, enemies, etc., but actually seeing it all in 3D. Please give Prime another chance, it should take you roughly 20 or so hours the first time through. It is TOTALLY worth it. Put the haters on your ignore list. :D

Metroid Prime 2 builds on MP, and heads in a different direction with the whole duality theme. Some of it seems a little overdone at times, but it's still a very atmospheric game, with some of the best bosses in the series, IMO. Also more difficult than the first game, in puzzles and combat, which is nice. If you ever replay Prime, you'll notice how easy it is after initially completing it.

Prime 1 is absolute brilliance. One of the defining games of the generation. I found Prime 2 to be incredibly dull. Still haven't gotten around to beating it.

Metroid Prime is a great game, it felt like an attempt to make Super Metroid in 3D almost, however, I like Metroid Prime 2 better. Echoes is more challenging and has a lot more classic Metroid elements in it that I love.

I like both equal. But if you are going to start off playing a Prime game, then it has to be the original. Echoes, is more for the veteran Prime player and is definately better suited to someone who's played the original already.

Plus, Prime 1 does have the better environments to draw you in overall. Echoes was sort of lackluster with the exception of Sanctuary Fortress.

I never beat Prime 1, but I enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed Prime 2 and I beat it. Plus, you get mutliplayer. Not that that is a selling point, but it helps.

Skip 'em both and just play Zero Mission again (and Fusion if you've got it). Trust me, the Prime games don't live up to the Metroid legacy at all.

Go for Prime1. It's more like previous Metroids. It's the same style of level and gameplay.

I don't like the focus of the second one, the level werent's as good looking, it's too "american-grey-metallic-alien" for me.

They totally exceed the legacy, if you ask me.

Nobody aked you! :P

Did somebody actually ask you?

I don't think he is looking to skip either of them. Considering that almost everybody in this thread loved one or the other, I don't see why he should listen to one post. :D

No, but then I didn't open with that. :P

Because my one post is the shining beacon of truth in this orgy of lies! Just ask Dragona.

Why would you want someone to skip out on a game that they'd likely love?
Well, I wouldn't but then I'm not so sure he'll love the games either... in fact he mentions remembering not liking Prime much when he tried it. Most hardcore Metroid fans don't endorse the Primes and even as a hardcore Zelda fan (which really, isn't too different) I could immediately spot why. Fucked flow, lacking vertical design and a loss of almost all movement based mechanics/puzzles sort of puts a big damper on Metroid in 3D. The Prime twins are unquestionably high quality, high production, high polish games in their own right... but they make for a rather subpar Metroid experience.

Overall, I preferred the design in Prime.

The first two-thirds of Echoes isn't as engaging as Prime. The last one-third and especially the Fortress Sanctuary in Echoes, however, kicks all kinds of ass and is much better than most of Prime.

Winner: Prime
Best Overall Level Design: Prime
Best Single Level: Echoes - Fortress Sanctuary

i'd recommend the first as well. echoes isn't a bad game by any means, it just doesn't have that special something that the first did... besides, if you dig prime 1 you can always play echoes later.

on a side note, i just bought a new, sealed copy of prime 1 off of ebay (without the yellow stripe of shame) a few days ago and i've already beat the game twice. i'm looking forward to playing through it again (i should've never traded it in to begin with)....

Just to share an opinion in this regard, i'm a Metroid freak, i'm VERY PICKY at my games and Prime2 didn't cut it. Prime1 was good enough for my money but Super Metroid stays the best in the series by quite a big margin.
In the ambiance and style of what we are used to the series and also the style of the surroundings, Prime1 fits better in what the guy is looking for. Don't forget that he want s to play what is the closest to the 2D Metroids.
