MGS 4 at E3 '05?

This article appeared in the latest issue of PSM2 (UK):

Metal Gear Solid 4 will make its debut on Playstation 3 at this year's E3 (the world's biggest game show, held in Los Angeles). The game is being announced as we speak at a special Metal Gear event in Berlin attended by Producer Hideo Kojima, and PSM2. However, the tantalising first 30 seconds of footage won't be shown until E3 - as the epic finale of Sony's now-certain PS3 public unveiling this May.

It looks like MGS Producer Hideo Kojima - hailed by US News Weekly Time Magazine as 'the Spielberg of games' - won't be in charge, taking a hands off 'Creative Director' role. Production duties will be passed to MGS3's Executive Producer Motoyuki Yoshioka. It's believed thatMGS3 was his trial run, with Kojima co-holding the reins - and, judging by our review score of 97% (get the PAL verdict on pg101), he was, without doubt, a resounding success.

The news isn't exactly entirely unexpected. Senior Konami execs had revealed the existance of MGS4 during a financial conference call in November 2004, stating that work had already begun. This raises some interesting questions - Konami must have been in possession of rough PS3 specs as early as mid-2004, and Sony are more advanced with their 'next-gen' machine than they're letting on to us?

Our source has intimated that the game may take an unexpected change of direction - Kojima always insisted that MGS3 would be the last of the trilogy. Will the new game follow the 1960s timeline? Or follow on from Acid's 2016 setting? A dramatic change of location is guarateed, we're told. Will you play as Snake or a cloned 'son' of the boss? The detail are out there as we speak - stay tuned to PSM2 for all the very latest MGS4 news.

Anybody have the mag?

This was reported AGES ago outside of PSM2. I don't think they specifically announced the platform though (did they? i'm not sure actually..though obviously PS3 would be no surprise, and it certainly would make for an epic climax during sony's presentation).

Personally I hope it is shown, and that it continues on the story that MGS2 dropped off at.

I wouldn't mind another Big Boss style game, but I think whatever needed to be said before the first Metal Gear, it was all said with MGS3. Easily.

I don't believe this news but who knows.

But I guess if they do this it will mean no MGS3:Substance trailer at E3 and no game at all :(

The MGS4 info part is old news. But the 30 sec E3 '05 tidbit is new. Which is kinda wierd in itself as all the other sites that reported on the UK launch event never mentioned anything about an E3 trailer.

Hmm...

I personally want to see a remake of the original MG along the lines of the RE Remake, that updates it with all the plot points that have been added to the series, so we can get a better idea of who Big Boss was before he died as compared to who he was in the 60s. He's obviously not the 1 dimensional evil guy that MG and MG:SS would have had us believe.

Didn't Kojima state that he would rather spend time working on a new game then have his team working on a rehash of another again?

Yes nothing like that (about the trailer and director Motoyuki Yoshioka) was revealed at the press conference, but it seems that PSM2 knew about this before it was announced at the Berlin press conference (you can tell by the way it is written), so they were right on about it being announced in Berlin, so they could be right...

Yes, he said that he'd rather work on a new game entirely than waste a year on something like MGS 3 Substance or Document of MGS 3

Meh. Each game he has pumped out, bar Metal Gear 2 (MG1 is a close call) have all been remade on another console.

Huge-ass urban setting with sky scrapers.

I want it set during The Boss and Cobra's mission in Normandy. They said the stealth would be completely different in this game, so taking place during an actual war would change things up quite a bit. :)

Well it's less of a rehash and more of that they've released MGS1/2 in Japan as international versions with the English dub + US/EU extras + new extras with Alternative and Substance. Since the EU version of MGS3 has a boss battle mode and new camos it seems likely that there would be a re-release of the game in Japan with the new stuff and maybe a little more.

I mean doing a version like that would take them < 2-3 weeks max so it's not like it's stopping them from working on another project.

MGS3:Sub I wouldn't be that bothered about but, dammit, I wanted a Documents for this, Doc of MGS2 was awesome, and something I wish more developers would do.

It seems that way...

If Motoyuki Yoshioka did a bulk(or even some) of the directorial work in MGS3 I am feeling a little better about not having Kojima direct MG4.....they did awesome work with Snake Eater...

so what role did Motoyuki Yoshioka play in developing MGS3? Co-producer?

Executive producer. That's been his job on the MGS team since the original.

Even if Kojima doesn't direct the game, he needs to stay on as the cutscene director. That's a must.

Didn't kojima say that the "no place to hide" comment was taken out of context? It would be kind of cool to play in a big city with hundreds of people all around you. Hopefully the PS3 is capable of doing that.

Can i still sneak past them all under a box?

So, what's the role of an Executive producer? don't know those roles very well. :)

huho - so we`ll be able to see some first gfx power from the third playstation? :)

But of course! It will be PS3's first announcement, and they always accompany such events with demos (be they tech demos, or game demos, or both).

It might be different in the game industry, but in general (movies and music) its someone that deals with the financial aspect of a project.

Why? He hasn't been very hands-on with the cutscene directing since the first MGS.

if true, mgs4 will probably be game of the show for the next 3 years. :lol

i still think mgs2 was the last big leap forward in graphics and presentation, and although the actual game was patchy, its unveiling really inaugurated this generation. i wonder whether mgs4 will have the same significance for next gen.

Why? Here's a translated snippet from a Kojima interview in Swedish RESET Magazine:

R: In MGS2, you took the storytelling further than ever, which you've received some criticism for. What do you think about that game today?

Kojima: When the development of Metal Gear Solid was at its most intensive, the team was made up of nearly 50 people. During the final phase of MGS2, there were almost 100 people involved, and then I couldn't meddle with everything in detail anymore. I wrote the basic script, but was later forced to bring in other script writers. The story wasn't mine in the same way as the one in MGS. This wasn't just concerning the script. In MGS, I planned every little detail on how the perspectives would change and from what angles the player would experience the scenes. When we did MGS2, I had a whole team who only worked on the camera perspectives. I naturally greenlighted all of their work, but wasn't at all as involved in every little camera pan.

Alternatively, you could just look up the credits for MGS2 & MGS3 and you would see that Kojima didn't do the storyboards or direct the cutscenes.

Damn :( How can you be so sure?

Metal Gear Solid released - 1998
Metal Gear Solid 2 shown at E3 - 2000
Metal Gear Solid 2 released - 2001
Metal Gear Solid 3 shown at E3 - 2003
Metal Gear Solid released - 2004

I don't know, at this point I just assumed that Metal Gear Solid 4 wouldn't be shown until E3 2006, and then be released in 2007.

Maybe we will see another PSP Metal Gear game?!

Yes, except you're missing 2 :P That's why it would make a lot of sense to show an international upgraded MGS3 this year and MGS4 next year. It would follow tradition, but maybe 2005 is the year where the tradition breaks.

Metal Gear ?International/forgot name? [trailer?] + release - 1999

Integral in Japan, VR Missions here in the states.

I really want the team to take a break before they dive into 4. I'd rather a more solid version of Snake Eater with all the pal extras and something different. I'm curious to see what they'd do since there's no VR at the time.

I hope they fix the camera for the next MGS.
the camera for MGS3 was terrible... unplayabe. I couldn't continue playing MGS3 as it got too anoying.

I think it would be cool if they did a VR set but the tiles were various colors to take advantage of the camaflouge engine. They already did 3d VR in Substance so having tree like objects should be ok too. The only thing missing in VR mode would be grass (they could throw animals around the VR map). I'm sure if they did do a VR-like pack it would be something very creative though.
