MGSV:TPP LAUNCH TRAILER

LOTR is high fantasy tho.

That's what we call it now, sure. But it was also Tolkien's reflection on certain personal experiences (WW1), personal interests / science (culture, folklore, history, myths and language) and commentary on certain social developments that bothered/interested him during his era (industrialisation vs nostalgia regarding his home turf, the meaning of 'power', greed, etc). I look at the MGS series in that context, not if it fits the 'Is a realistic militairy uber-Rambo simulator with fun gameplay' framework. Im exaggerating a bit but I hope you get my point :)

I know, stupid of me to expect the use of spoiler tags while hoping to read some general impressions of the aforementioned trailer. I'll be sure to remember that in the OT.

'Man, I walked into the Apple store the other night and I saw the Apple Watch, and people talking about it. Dammit. They should have warned me, I only wanted second hand impressions about the Apple Watch, not see it for myself'.

bad analogy, but hey :P

Well it looks like Mantis is seemingly controlling this. It's possible with his abilities he's making this MG do things it probably can't do.

Anyone play Portable Ops.

Controlling is one thing, but it's using tech that simply outclasses pretty much every Metal Gear we've seen.

I think I have a better theory.
The last trailer mentioned that Cipher found something (a power source?) in Africa that can help him make something better than a Metal Gear. Whatever that is could be a very limited resource, or all of it is eventually destroyed.

Very possible I just kinda suspend my disbelief here and figure it's solely for gameplay purposes.

I didn't know that (about LOTR).
I can see what you mean.

is there any reason it shows Snake walking
and slowly becoming Skull Face?

I've been floating this theory around the interwebs. Snake has
been post-hyponotically programmed to be the catalyst for what the Patriots need to bring about their new miltary order. So Skullface and co have had 9 years to get into his head, and he did
.

I just ventured over to wikipedia about reception of Tolkien's work and ran into stuff like this:

"New York Times reviewer Judith Shulevitz criticized the "pedantry" of Tolkien's literary style, saying that he "formulated a high-minded belief in the importance of his mission as a literary preservationist, which turns out to be death to literature itself."

but also:

"no 'mainstream critic' appreciated The Lord of the Rings or indeed was in a position to write criticism on it — most being unsure what it was and why readers liked it."

That's why most gaming websites/journalists seem to focus on the gameplay aspects, because that is the topic that they are (extremely) familiar with and can write something judgemental about, just as the early Tolkien literary reviewers could say that his is prose is 'badly written' and 'pompous' etc.

The rest is completely up for debate, and time will tell of Kojima will become a 'Tolkien of computer games'. I hope he does, not because I'm a big fanboy but it would be actually be a cultural development :P

I know! Did people really think Kojima was going to turn the series into a dry "Tom Clancy" knock-off - especially given its place within the overall continuity of the Metal Gear saga?

The odd thing is that its happening in some reviews too. Metal Gear has always contained a strong thread of manga-style excess... its one of the defining features of the franchise.

The people who complain about goofy/unrealistic shit in MGS as if it's always been some super-serious/realistic spy/military series remind me of the people who complain when World of Warcraft occasionally has "silly" bosses/dungeons/etc. as if it's always been some super-grimdark fantasy series. This shit has been there since day one, it's not the creators' fault that your rose-colored glasses tune it out.

I stopped watching as soon as Snake was running away from Metal Gear, about 3 mins in. I don't need to be spoiled after being pretty much in media blackout completely since the initial reveal. Only 6 days to go!!!!

What a fucking stupid trailer. Good to know who directed and edited the trailer up front though, that question would've been on my mind for weeks otherwise.

We live in a world where people admonish Michael Bay and praise Hideo Kojima. Which is funny.

It was a legitimately great trailer. Better than most other video game trailers.

I'm sure Kojima would be happy that you're comparing him to Michael Bay, though. Not alot of game directors get compared to film directors.

Well, I enjoy both Michael Bay movies and Hideo Kojima games. I also think the trailer was a good one.

And yet other people go in droves to see Michael Bay movies, and even other people (like you) don't like Kojima. It's almost like different people have different opinions. Holy shit.

Maybe he's just really mad that Michael Bay doesn't get the love that Hideo Kojima gets on GAF.

Kojima games despite their excessive amounts of stupidity and bad writing are a million times more interesting than anything Michael bay

Yeah and I'm not denying the existence anime/magic/supernatural elements in the previous games. Just saying they were implemented in a way that made the technology seem plausible - you could imagine DARPA coming up with something similiar in future.

A flaming whip sword just seems ridiculous and would be more at home in a Dark Souls game. I cannot imagine a military developing a walking tank equipped with flamming whip/sword as a weapon.

You do have a point, but while reading this I instantly realized how similar solidus's tentacle arms could be to that whip sword in tech. those tentacle arms let solidus climb up a building so he could do a drop attack on raiden. (Oh yeah gosh all the weird animal tech they made for the b&b's is weird, too, now that i think about it. Those hand robots....Raiden's lightning sword makes no real sense either, actually)

Maybe the whip arm is a reference to the wire arm that metal gear mark 2 had?

I agree. Kojima games, at the least, are interesting because of all his weird idiosyncrasies combined with AAA game budgets. Aside from the overly sexualized portrayal of women, these games don't feel like they were designed by committee.

Don't forget the robot dicks. Also, it's funny that the ST-84 has a feminine walk as well as a robot dick.

i bet Michael Bay stole the idea of robot genitals from Metal Gear Solid. What a hack!!
