RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Shortly after dusk along a lonely stretch of Interstate 95, armed robbers hijacked an armored truck, tied up the two guards and disappeared into the night with 275 pounds of gold bars.

The guards working for Transvalue Inc. of Miami reported pulling off to the side of the interstate about 6:30 p.m. Sunday after their vehicle began having mechanical problems in eastern North Carolina, according to the Wilson County Sheriff's Office.

The guards told police they were surprised by three armed men driving a white van who ordered the guards to lie on the ground, tied their hands behind their backs and then marched them into nearby woods.

The robbers then helped themselves to barrels filled with about $4.8 million in gold before making their getaway. Transvalue said its employees were not injured during the heist.

Transvalue chief executive officer Jay Rodriguez said the truck carrying the gold bars left Miami about 4 a.m. Sunday. The load was headed to Attleboro, Massachusetts, a town south of Boston nicknamed "Jewelry City" for the large number of manufacturers based there.

"At this time we are working with the authorities to try and resolve this matter," Rodrigez said. "We are offering a $50,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest of these criminals."

Though Interstate 95 is one of the busiest roads on the East Coast, the rural stretch where the robbery occurred is relatively isolated, bordered by trees and farms.

Wilson County Sheriff Calvin Woodard Jr. declined interview requests Monday and did not respond to messages from The Associated Press seeking additional information, such as what weapons the robbers used or how they managed to get the armored truck open. No detailed description of the suspects or their vehicle was released.

Shelley Lynch, spokeswoman for the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Charlotte field office, said agents are assisting the local sheriff and are working to determine whether a federal crime has been committed.

According to its website, Transvalue specializes in transporting cash, precious metals, gems and jewelry in armored trucks. The company says its shipments are insured for up to $100 million.

The truck just happened to have issues? Yeah okay.

I feel bad for the drivers, but I'm still impressed that they actually robbed an armored truck.

Inside job.

Yup. That's probably how they will crack this whole thing open, finding out who fed these robbers the hyper-specific information about this truck and the precise place to take it down to get less attention.

If they find out no one inside was in on it, not only will I be genuinely surprised but I believe it'll be considered one of the more impressive heists if they never get caught. Mystery about just how they knew about this truck, its route and the place to take it down.

I have to say it was an well planned heist. I've always thought about what I'd do if I was a criminal scumbag and gold truck heist was always my thought. Money is traceable. Gems can be too. Gold though if you melt that shit down is not.

The planning to pull this off must have been insane if there wasn't a man inside to help them gain access to the truck to sabotage it.

That is why you have to start killing the other conspirators. That way no one can rat and all the money is yours.

Not if they are paid to keep their mouths shut.

If they played this well exucuted inside job right, they probably planned on what to do and say when one of them is interigated.

incoming .gif of scenes from Heat? lol

how or why would you transport gold bars in barrels? kinda make the robber's job easier to just roll the barrels away no?

killing them would make this a Federal crime thou which means the heat on them will be much more heavy no?

It astounds me that there are real life high profile thieves in this day and age. Reminds me of that group that stole millions in diamonds from a plane in like five minutes.

Will we ever find out how they pulled this heist off? It had to be well planned to stop the truck right where they wanted it.

It sounds like something out of a videogame or movie, Barrels? Who puts valuables there? Good Lord Above.

I can't believe this happened, it's pretty unreal.

does it make me a bad person if I think this is kinda fucking awesome? If so, I blame hollywood.

The fact that this was successful in this day and age and how nobody got hurt, I think it's also pretty damn awesome lol.

It's not everyday you hear about thieves being just thieves coomitting a successful robbery like this.

Not that I ever want things like this to ever happen but hey, I have to give them props. They did the job well. I don't think I could ever do a job that well in Payday 2 XD.

They could get away with it and they didn't hurt anyone. It's impressive. Plus, the gold doesn't have much utility - we dig it out of the ground just to go bury it somewhere else. And it's insured. It's silly in the abstract.
