Microsoft ‘wants its own Genshin Impact-like game’ for Xbox

Reuters notes that the company is accelerating plans to find an equivalent title to the action role-playing game, which has seen over four billion dollars of revenue in two years for Shanghai studio miHoYo.

Genshin Impact, an anime-style open-world game, is monetized through gacha mechanics, in which players pay for the chance to earn special characters they can then use in-game.

Daniel Ahmad, senior analyst at researcher Niko Partners told Reuters that “Chinese game developers are trying to standardize their development tools, create advanced production processes, invest in really large-scale teams.”

“Ultimately, that helps provide them with the competitive edge to reach a broad audience both in terms of the geography and platforms.”

Reuters claims that sources indicate to them that Microsoft is scouting the Chinese markets for new developers it could bring into the fold. The company is also allegedly “wooing even independent studios with big-money offers.”

While Sony doesn’t own the Genshin Impact IP, it did partner with developer miHoYo early in the game’s development and assisted in bringing it to market. The game is on PC and mobile devices, although the console version of the game is exclusively on PlayStation.

It is understood the game makes the majority of its money on mobile platforms, but the game is regularly at the top of the most played free-to-play games on PlayStation.

According to Reuters sources, Microsoft “regrets” missing out on Genshin, and had briefly spoken to miHoYo when Genshin was being developed, but talks fell through.

“Picking up Genshin Impact made Sony a lot of money,” according to a Reuters source, who declined to be identified because the information was not public.

Genshin is incredible and really took me by surprise, looks super great, incredible anime style art direction (my favorite with Dragon Quest and Persona), very innovative and one of the best combat system in the genre, and one of the best OST of all time.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
They can't just get genshin? If the deal is about money just outbid sony next time its up.

Buyer has to be willing to buy.
Seller has to be willing to sell.

Otherwise Sony might as well gives up on every acquisition since Microsofr is going to outbid them on every minor/major acquisitions.
Microsoft could have outbid bungie, pretty sure Bungie could help Microsoft alot, but it didnt happen.

GI is a very massive IP, perhaps the 1 IP alone is too expensive for Microsoft, assuming Mihoyo is willing to sell

MS budget for these deals seems exponetially smaller which as a ms consumer id prefer. put money into new games not just keeping games off. BUT if the suits want genshin im just curious why they wont try to outbid. Id prefer they make their own of course.

You'd think a F2P game like Genshin would want to be on every platform. It's even on Epic gamestore, and was supposed to come to Switch. Not sure if Sony has the game locked down for consoles, but they did get some exclusive content for their platform so perhaps that's what it is.

Punishing Gray Raven console port when?

Provide tech support to get the port and controls to work well with a controller and MS are golden.
We all know the best gacha games are actually Waifu simulators, so might as well get PGR.

That or go with Wuthering Waves

Which is already being compared to Genshin Impact anyway.

But bring PGR to consoles, actually an interesting combat mechanic, if they can get the contorls to feel right with a controller that would be awesome.

I guess it may applies to games like Silent hill 2 remake when Microsoft could have offer bigger cash for day 1 Xbox version, perhaps there are other factors in the contract on these partnerships which we cant see.
Maybe Mihoyo offered a certain price which Microsoft deemed not worth it for the userbase on Xbox, or maybe its between Mihoyo and Sony to block other offer by their competitors...

You have to be some fat fuck living in moms basement to unironically think genshin is good. That game was always shit, one of my friends used to play it daily, then he woke up, saw what he was playing and went to a better game. To praise it like this is a joke

There are better games Xbox could ask for

Tbh Genshin is in alot of places. When I think about why is not on Switch is because no way they would trouple themselves putting this game to fit Switch when it already struggles on PS4. And this without taking account file sizes and that some people are harsh to downplay this game as a BoW clone.
As for xbox I'm pretty sure it has to do with their fanbase, which kinda has a preconception with anime art style games, pretty much present of Switch and PS4/PS5.
Pretty sure Myoho, greedy the way they are, wouldn't miss opportunity to throw this game at alot of directions.

The game is not perfect, i mean most of it because it's "Gacha", but it has a lot of qualities as i said above.

But of course a keyboard warrior like you can't know that if you never played it.

Also the last line shows how ignorant you are, cause there could be better games on XBox (which better on which is subjective as always), but there is no game like Genshin in the Market, and even more in Xbox. But noice try tho.

I feel like those who think this may ever come to Switch simply never played the game, or just don't know anything about tech. As you said the game is already a bit heavy for PS4, so for Switch... (but if they do a Cloud version that's another story)

If only it didn't have the terrible resin system and, worse of all, the artifact rng. It's probably the worst type of RNG grinding I've seen in my life, so many layers of RNG, it's beyond tolerable, it's really crazy.
I really like the game but I'm at the point where I don't pull for new characters anymore because I can't stand these random artifact upgrades anymore.

Honest question, does anybody even play those "Cloud versions" of ported games?
Like, sounds not only stupid but cheap as fuck.
As for the matter of difficulty I might risk a guess that perhaps is possible if they find somebody else to port. But then, its not like we have lovely results of games like Deadly Premonition or Ark for Switch. It would mean basically remove everything from the game, until it becomes barelly recognizable and then slap on Switch, and called it one of those famous "impossible ports".

Basically this. I don't think there is a single GI player that don't hate those lol

Are you sure? I sometimes see players who try to kind of defend it, I even had people telling me "why do you even play if you don't like it", it's quite annoying, for a lot of people it seems like if you criticize one thing about genshin impact, you don't like anything about it, it's everything or nothing for them for some reason.
I think the only people who tolerate these systems are actually people who don't player regular single player games, with a correctly balanced system.

I mean it's genshin it has the biggest fanbase in the world, so likely biggest fanboys and most of them young, i guess.

Honeslty just here in Gaf if you go the main Genshin thread and ask people nobody will tell you that resin and rng system are awesome, and same for if you look at youtube, it actually just recently caused some drama cause in an interview the devs said they don't plan to improve or add more resin.

Basically, most GI players are casuals, just do some teopot and cie, i've seen some that have Raiden lvl 90 with Engulfing with.... 0 artefacts, so. Nothing is wrong with that but they can't know how annoying it is if they don't even use it. As you say for those type of players not surprising if they don't care about this stuffs, and mean if they don't even do the resin and art how can they even know that it can be very bothering.

Unlikely to be successful, really. One game doesn't prove that this industry is ready for mainstream console games.

Slime Rancher is all you need. Just put cute outfits and voices together and watch the money just pour in.
Look what can be done with Slimes.

I wish we could at least stack more resin. I just really hate having to feel "forced" to play by little amounts every day. It would be better if I could stack condensed resins for 2 weeks and be able to grind for one hour when I decide to, instead of doing 5 minutes every day.

Damn what happened to creativity? This reminds me of when Microsoft said Xbox needs it's own Uncharted type game, and then paid to make Tomb Raider exclusive for a year.

Microsoft need to create something new for the industry instead of copying what Sony has. They're essentially paying to restrict consumer options on a rivials hardware, because it's easier than taking a loss on investing in a new exclusive IP.

From what I've seen of Genshin it would be a bad fit for Xbox. So I'm assuming Microsoft means "a huge free to play franchise". On Xbox it would have to be a shooter or wRPG.

Evolved1

make sure the pudding isn't too soggy but that just ruins everything
You can interpret this as, "we too need a predatory gotcha that somehow sells on our console without damaging backlash."

What that would look like on Xbox, idk... probably isn't a waifu simulator.

The way they have spent their money has been pretty creative, no?

Ask me about my fanboy energy!
They already have PSO2:NG. This franchise has always been on Xbox since the beginning. Also one of Activision's studios is in Shanghai.
You really think it’s that simple? GI userbase is not on Xbox and the game would severely flop there lmao
The argument that Xbox users won't play these games is so wrong. Phantasy Star Universe on Xbox 360 had more users than PS2 and PC combined. Final Fantasy XI had a huge following on Xbox 360. Yakuza franchise got so many fans in Xbox.
