Microsoft cancels post-E3 media roundtable

Jeff Gerstmann continues to be one of the few not crazy people reading this story.

They did have a Q&A roundtable or a discussion of some sort after the Xbox Reveal on May 21st, didn't they? Just makes you wonder why they cancelled the one for the E3 now.

It's just a company with a bunch of people working there. Not a evil dragon. Do you think they wanted RROD, like it was planned? Their greatest sin with the XBO is be unclear. You're assigning emotion to this like we're not not seeing the despot villain that you can clearly see.

If I recall correctly, Microsoft knew about the risks of the Graphics Chip overheating and took the risk willingly, just to be first to market.

I don't think MS is in the position to force anyone to do anything. We've seen nintendo rise and fall (and rise again and fall again), we've seen Sony go from most popular console ever to third place. Are developers really going to bow to MS as if it's a given they will be successful this coming gen? Anyone who even halfways pays attention to videogames should know that absolutely nothing is a given.

I think publishers are siding with MS because MS is giving them money and pushing a stricter DRM scheme. But they aren't going to sever ties with Sony. Because they know just as well as any of us do that a year from now Sony might be at 10 million consoles and MS might be at 2. Or maybe it's the other way around. Crazier shit has happened.

Edit: And if MS has the power to 'force' parity they wouldn't need to be spending so much money right now to hide the fact that it doesn't exist.

I like your posts mortimer..but why does everyone keep saying Sony is in 3rd place?

Didn't they top MS worldwide a long ass time ago?

they know they can't handle the true questions they will be asked.

drm, rentals, used games, trade ins, etc. they don't want to answer those questions now. they just want to say... here's the xbone. tv, sports, cod, *new games here*.... hurry up & buy! no ask questions!

If you aren't going to face your critics head on, you are implying you may have something to hide. You have just now allowed game journalists and others to form their own conclusions. Not good

Sounds like Gerstmann has a firm grasp of the business side and the forum side. Expect his analysis to be ignored.

If this is in fact the case then that's fair enough, but you can't blame people for being concerned when they hear things like this, especially when Microsoft have done everything they can already to avoid answering some extremely important questions.

LOL I doubt that. You really think the likes of PA, GB, Polygon, IGN, GI, Geoff etc will grill MS on behalf of consumers? The idea is laughable.

They did it because they have nothing new to add aside from TBA they have been saying over and over again. NO company in this industry fears the press.

His "firm grasp" of the forum side is Giant Bomb not caring at all about DRM and the death of used games right? I don't know why anyone holds them up on a pedestal when they botched the most important gaming issue this gen.

If he wants to paint all forum criticism of Xbone as the work of irrational reactionaries, it's really just another way to minimize people's legitimate complaints and suspicions.

Agreed. If game discs operated the same as last gen then we wouldn't be having these conversations. Bottom line, we're all about to get fucked. The only question is how hard.

Nope they are fucking themselves here. They can keep their abortion of a half powered DRM spyware machine.

I agree with this to an extent. My biggest criticism of the games journalists isn't that they aren't asking the right questions, since we know they are, it's just the answers are shite.

The biggest concern is that so many of the bigger sites are just happy to bend over and accept Microsoft's strategy as "the way it has to be", which is bullshit. I've also heard a few cite as fact that Sony will have exactly the same DRM systems in place, which we don't know for certain and is looking increasingly unlikely.

Sony was slaughtered in 2006, and rightfully so, for taking the piss out of consumers, I don't get why MS would get an easier ride.

True. A Q+A session from the gaming press is like being caressed with a natural yogurt. I love when people call it a 'grilling' sometimes. Its nothing. There's no back and forth with publishers, the publisher barks and the journalist just writes it down. Manufacturers are the same.

In console sales, they caught up with units shipped a while back, but actually sold is trickier to measure. Either way, by now Sony is at least on the same level as Microsoft in total console sales by now, if not slightly ahead. But console sales is not where they make their money (and in fact, for the first few years it was where they were losing money hand over fist).

When it comes to total revenue, Microsoft definitely comes ahead. Between higher software sales, Xbox Live subscriptions, and advertising, there is simply no way Sony has higher revenue than Microsoft this generation.

Profit is a bit of a different story, but Microsoft still comes ahead there for the current generation (though the whole Xbox division is still in the red by a wide margin).

I absolutely agree with this. I cannot possibly shake my head hard enough when I see journalists parroting lines from EA about how Gamestop is single-handedly putting the entire gaming industry out of business, and how it's in everyone's best interest to surrender all ownership of games because the EAs and Activisions of the world will do much better by us when they finally kill used games.

I find it especially appalling that no one ever takes publishers to task on the fact that they very publicly complain that Gamestop is killing them, but they continue to offer Gamestop exclusive DLC, actively encouraging customers to shop there.

For shame journalists, for shame.

Haha, they're doing it to shield themselves from having to answer questions about their horrendous DRM issues. No doubt about it. What a witheringly embarrassing day for Microsoft, once again. Xbox One: The clusterfuck console.

As a gay man, I'm starting to get real tired of being informed that Microsoft are about to 'fuck us up the ass' and how bad that is. Being fucked up the ass is awesome. Please think of a different metaphor for the bad things that're about to happen.

I'm critical of the press too but they didn't do so bad in terms of the Xbox event, they passed on a lot of information even if you don't like the opinions of individual journalists.

Getting balled by Ballmer? No one would want that.

that just feels like a sign of the poor health of industry. Sure, we'll take your free money to not show off our games at an expo dedicated to just that.

Regardless of what happens, there's still plenty of time until launch to show off demos and trailers of games for both consoles. Might as well take the money.

Sounds like they're killing the cow to get the milk. If nothing else, gonna be a crazy E3! 5 more days!

Sorry. How bout, getting fucked over? Or maybe you like that too ;)

Raped in the ass? It's unwanted.

I think asking a follow up question to the supplied PR answer would be better than saying nothing and moving on. Instead of just being someone who takes notes like a secretary.

You are asking if the journalist should be irritating and shouty. I am saying they should be normal.

They will annouce some good exclusives at e3 but I guess if they can't be sure that's all anyone will ask about then they don't want to. Maybe they could just get some MS employees to stand in the back cheering.

They will have some equivilent that is much more controlled by them

This doesn't exactly build confidence. I hope Microsoft explains why they've taken this decision, because as things stand it's hard not to think that they're trying to evade difficult questions and keep bad news buried.

:lol amazing. I suppose this is to save themselves the PR disaster after the reveal. I read the thread title and this is what I imagined.

LOL, I'll be sure to say something like shoving a giant razorblade up our collective ass next time. And if you are into Sadism and shit then this razorblade would kill you and not feel good at all even with the love of pain.

And if you have a weird fetish with death and killing and shit well then I can't help you. Razorblades up the ass to me is not a good time.

its obvious the conference will be absolute in its transparency, answering every question we ever had, rendering this post roundtable nonsense useless
