Why shouldn't Microsoft enter the handheld market if Sony has? A portable from them with built-in Media Center and games like Halo available with wi-fi multiplayer sounds pretty good to me.

BINGO!!

I don't think MS would do it, but I was hoping that they would.

There's already Creative's Media Player, something I'd never buy because it only serves a couple of purposes, whereas something like the PSP does more than watch movies and listen to mp3s.

Maybe your analyst friend knows something that Bill Gates doesn't know.

Q: Is there a portable Xbox in the works?

A: No, we're not in the handheld gaming market with a dedicated device. Nor are we even hinting in any way that we have plans to get in that. We're hard at work on Xbox, Xbox Live and looking at what the next generation of that would be.

Do a google search on Bill Gates handheld gaming and you'll find about 30 different articles with either Bill or some other Microsoft executive all saying the exact same thing. They have no plans to get into the portable gaming universe, but they would love to supply the software for devices like cell phones that would be the gateway for digital media services like music, pictures, and videos.

I think they've learned their lesson with Xbox. I would almost bet the farm that they don't want anything to do with building a new piece of hardware for a new market. They're going to stick with Xbox because honestly, they're in too deep to turn back now with that division. Microsoft is a software company and not a hardware company and its taken a few billion in losses on the Xbox to reaffirm that.

Microsoft needs to get the whole home console thing right before diving into handhelds, and besides, even the almighty PSP isn't moving as fast as people were anticipating, what chance does MS have...

It would be a very sad day if MS became number one in the world of gaming at some point in the next few generations. Its nice to have healthy competition, but if they started to dominate thanks to superior resources it would spell a dark period for games where cash and marketing rules all.

Alread put up with the likes of EA's FIFA and Chelsea in the Premiership, another company who wins largely due to resources would just kill it.

MS is already pretty damned close to being in the handheld game industry. They play crucial roles in Nokia's, Tapwave's, Tiger's, and various PDA makers' hardware.

...

Creative likes the idea, and licenses PocketX. Their iteration of it is a high-end media player going directly at Apple's (GPod) and Sony's (PSP) throats.

Uhhh.... WTF are you talking about.

Nokia using Symbian, Tapwave uses Palm, but Tiger does use Windows CE. 1 out of 3 ain't bad. :lol

The Apple Gpod?????

:lol :lol

yes, i'd love to play handheld Halo X over wireless internet.

Give me that and a port of World of Warcraft and my toilet trips will become even longer...

I find the negative reactions to MS bringing out a handheld amusing. I think it would be great for MS to do something in this area - I find Nintendo's handhelds underpowered and Sony's too expensive. There is a huge gap between them for another product that combines the best of both and adds functionality to Xbox (talking about a portable media player and storage device to use with Xbox). Plus if it is close in spec to PSP it might justify more third parties releasing PSP games because they can port to/from the Xboy/Xdude/whatever. Bring it on.

I wonder, however, if that leaves room for a 360 Xpod that plays games? Even if they were just minigames, downloadable games that'd store on the hard drive it'd be a great idea -- I have no idea who all these idiots are, but people are playing games on their cellphones, so replace the hard drive on the system with a cradle and have an iPod-style drive instead of the regular unit, I could see that being quite coveted even if they don't put much effort into actually making much besides throw-aways and classic/emu games for it.
