Microsoft Says No Layoffs Coming After Executive Shakeup

LectureMaster

Or is it just one of Adam's balls in my throat?

Amid a massive restructuring at Xbox with Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond leaving Microsoft, the EVP of Microsoft Gaming says that organizational changes are not happening at Xbox-owned studios.

In an internal memo, Matt Booty, now Microsoft's chief content officer and EVP of Microsoft Gaming, noted that his primary focus is on supporting the staff in place and helping them achieve their best work. He also reassured that there are no planned restructurings at this time.

"My focus is on supporting the teams and leaders we have in place and creating the conditions for them to do their best work. To be clear, there are no organizational changes underway for our studios," he stated as part of his statement.

Furthermore, he was reassuring and said that the team has good reasons to believe in what's planned.

More on the Shakeup at Xbox

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced that Microsoft Gaming CEO and head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, will retire, and that Sarah Bond will step down. Bond was the president of Xbox. Asha Sharma is stepping in for Spencer. She's previously the head of CoreAI at Microsoft.

In his internal memo, Spencer congratulated Matt on his promotion and praised Booty and the Xbox team for the portfolio they built.

"I have full confidence in the leadership and creative momentum across our global studios. I want to congratulate Matt on his promotion to EVP and Chief Content Officer," Spencer wrote.

with Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond leaving Microsoft...

Both at the same time?

Hmm, seems like no small coincidence.

I'd be excited about them being banished, but when a void is left, usually somebody worse swoops in. Just look at PlayStation.

March it is then
The statement doesn't have "at this time" in it. The author of the article added that.

Direct quote from Booty's letter:

"To be clear, there are no organizational changes underway for our studios."

That's it. He then says thanks and ends it. Could there be more layoffs in a year or something? Maybe, probably, who knows, but it doesn't sound like they're imminent.

Need to update this meme now.

Basically the same, journo just reads between the corpo speech lines. It will be underway, but later. After the new CEO will take the reigns.

This is a nonsensical way of thinking about the reporting here. Of course layoffs or reorganisations might happen at some point in future; the future covers everything from now until the heat death of the universe. They're contextualising that he's saying no layoffs or reorganisations are currently planned.

Pure corporate PR slop.

After the shakeup, that's still like 2 days off, right? As long as they fire everyone before monday, they technically wouldn't have lied. Let's face it, though, the next round of layoffs is probably already scheduled...

Not immediately, no. I expect there will be more layoffs late this year or early next when Fable and the like underperform.

But they promoted Matt Booty. So it's not a matter of "if" there will be layoffs, but when.

Press release from Microsoft, with the money we saved from getting rid of overpaid Phil and Sarah, allowing us to hire someone with zero gaming exeprience for cheap, we are proud to announce that any planned layoffs have been briefly delayed into the near future so the new incoming person can make them.
