Microsoft Studios' creative director has some choice words about always-online

Why would any MS brass comment on what is basically just speculation on rumors? We don't even know when this thing is being revealed yet. This is all just free publicity.

They may want to stem the tide of the nuclear fallout. Then again, it's pretty clear from this asshat's tweets that he was only sharing his own self-centered and extremely misguided opinion, not trying to smooth over the waters of an always online Xbox to the few sad individuals who follow
ed
him.

As is traditional, it's business as usual at MS. No new Xbox exists right now, so any rumors conveniently cannot be commented on.

EDIT: And the people tweeting Major Nelson with "GAF IS HAVING A FIELD DAY WITH YOU LOL" are freaking embarrassing and I seriously hope they don't actually post here.

It's bad publicity and it's hurting the company.

They need to get out ahead of this, especially now that it's all over the web.

not anywhere close, read my subsequent posts explaining my point thx

oh and sorry if logic and reason are too soon, I realize we are still trying to keep the party going in this thread.

The assumption that publishers are in a position to force this upon consumers is what I don't agree with. Right now the industry is operating on thin margins. Studios are being shut down left and right, stock prices are tanking or flatlining. CEO's are getting canned. Everyone is desperate for next-gen to get some mojo back.

In this environment, it would only take one or two big games being negatively effected by this to really hurt publishers. They have created an industry where one flop is disastrous to bottom lines. Consumers are absolutely in a position of power right now. We can dictate what direction we want the whole industry to go in a way we haven't since the 2600.

The same forces that are making always-online tempting to publishers empower consumers to reject it.

Lot's to do today. @CallofDuty Championship and all. And all.

-major Nelson

GODDAMNIT!

I doubt he would have much to say. He manages the market place and is a hype machine. Not someone who tends to be privy to the specs of the next Xbox this early.

See this is why this strategy is poison for Microsoft.

Consumers have been EDUCATED on how terrible always-online drm can be - Diablo 3 and Sim City. Those were high profile fuck ups.

And Microsoft wants to launch a console with this?

I wonder is Ortho's tweets were a result of a manic bi-polar episode. That brazen careless tone he leads with is almost fatalistic.

The thing is, with always online games like MMORPGs, Diablo, or Sim City, consumers know what they're getting into, and they have choice. If your internet or the servers go down, you can always play another game. Even when I lose phone service (which happens a lot even in downtown Boston, especially on the subway), I can still play any game that isn't revolving around asynchronous multi.

An always online console though? MS is telling their consumers to go outside, read a book, or better yet, play the competition while your service or their servers are down. That's why most of these analogies don't work.

And the Twitter nonsense is just that, nonsense. If you're going to put out PR to justify a business decision, do that, don't tell your longtime customers "stop crying", "deal with it", or "you'll buy it anyway."

"You'll buy it anyway" isn't a business strategy, it's a concession that you fucked up. Consumer goodwill isn't a currency that you can save up and spend - look at the reversal of fortunes for the Wii U vs Wii, or PS3 vs PS2. American consumers can't wait to call your product yesterday's news if they find someone who offers a better deal.

Their silence will only serve to make it worse. The ball is in your court, Microsoft. If it was not true, you would think they would be quick to deny and douse the flames. As this has turned into a PR nightmare that is taking on a life of it's own.

Only caught up the story a couple hours ago. Thanks for the recap OP.

Thanks for the mayhem sweet billy. On a friday, that's perfect.

I could understand this & maybe even get past this guy's spergy antagonism if there was some direct benefit to the consumer here. "always on" is purely about showing ads, tracking user behaviour (and selling ads against it) & cozying up to old media """content owners""" who unironically believe this kind of thing stops piracy.

This just made me realise that my game of the generation, Warhawk, was online only. Not the same thing but it did give me that realisation. I remember thinking it felt weird when I first started playing.

Also: Play Warhawk. Amazing fun.

It can actually be played splitscreen/LAN, but yeah. Mostly online only.

When the time came to shut down servers, the 720 will essentially be dead by then. MS would have nothing to lose by patching the system so it allows offline gaming. I'm sure they would clarify either way.

Still though, we're already going to see that with PSN+

You know you can run the games without an internet connection and they are only set to expire when your subscription does?
So in theory, you can buy enough time to last a life-time and it should still work.

Besides, it is not like this is really comparable. One is an optional service that's main purpose is provide more while the other one is required and locks all games out.

I don't think the vast majority of Xbox owners know or understand what DRM is suppose to be. It's not gonna effect the next Xbox as much as you guys think.

I really don't give a damn what "Major" Nelson has to say -- I'm livid at his blatant abuse of the English language.

How did this thread grow 50 pages overnight???

I'm not sure where that poster who does thread recaps is -- but I'll try my best..

  • NeoGAF user Shinobi screen caps the tweets of Adam Orth, Creative Director at MSFT Studios.
  • These tweets contain the fallacious analogies you see in the OP -- in defense of an always-online console box.
  • In conjunction with the Kotaku thread about the always-online rumors, this thread blows up.
  • The story is picked up by popular gaming sites including CVG, Verge, Kotaku, and others.
  • David Jaffe attempts to defend the character of Adam (they were former coworkers) -- but particularly his comments regarding rural towns in the US and their online infrastructure.
  • Adam attempts to excuse the tweets as jokes and locks his twitter account.
  • Detective-GAF then finds an alleged dev on a separate forum claiming one should keep up with their ISP bills (implying some truth to the rumor).
  • Detective-GAF then confirms that alleged dev to be an actual developer working on next-gen games.
  • The story continues to blow up on reddit, reaching the front page with thousands of comments.
  • A user in the reddit thread claims Adam is an ass in person and he insists on being called 'sweet billy.'
  • Detective-GAF then confirms Adam is in fact, sweet billy, here on GAF. And his tweets confirm he is, in fact, an ass.
  • Aaron Greenberg claims to be unaware of the existence of Adam Orth. [Insert Sweet Billy joke]

and right now this news has spread like wild fire.

It will once people experience it. It may not dent day 1 or even day 60 sales, but by day 365 people will know.
