I'm with you. I'm secretly hoping they do away with the color green altogether. It's hideous.
Fuck it, go with purple. Works for the Kinect boxes.
if UE4 is anything to go by, the future is blue

The thing he did wrong was demeaning his customers in an irrational matter. He could have easily explained why to him Online Only was good thing, with arguments. He chose to make fun of legit concerns and basically said: "Ha! Fuck you you stupid fuck." No shit storm no nothing would have happened if he made rational arguments and addressed the issue in a fair matter, or not at all.

You are just stupid if you don't think twice when you are posting anything offline. Very often I think, "Yeah, I better not post it, might want to work for those guys in the future", or "Yeah I feel this hard about this issue, I feel comfortable explaining this when I am confronted about it."
In fairness I think he would have had to get to detailed to do that. But like the poster above say blacksburg isn't some po dunk town. I thought that was weird maybe because it's somewhat in the mountains? I dont know the guys so out of touch maybe there idea of rural American is blacksburg.
no
he should not have mentioned online only at all. By doing so he as an official MS employee of semihigh rank on his twitter strengthened the rumours by quite a bit and broke against company policy and damaged MS reputation as well as their marketing/launch plans for their future console aimed towards a billion dollar market
Hmm, I subconsciously always associated Sony with the color blue ever since the PS2 boxes.
Microsoft - Green
Sony - Blue
Nintendo - Red
i dont think they care,we are the minority.
We might be the vocal minority but MS is miscalculating broadband penetration if they go with this.
I think this is an interesting point. I'm completely against always online, but in a strange way it could be a catalyst and a wake up call to governments and ISPs all over the world that their infrastructure is not growing at the rate at which technology is and changes need to be made. The company goal is to create an ideal marketplace for itself and have you want it at the same time. They don't really care if it's optimal now because they are willing to drive interest and adoption. That why Microsoft is a good partner to have for third parties compared to say, Nintendo. Microsoft has invested billions in online infrastructure and they will invest billions for the chance to be the conduit for all their partners content as well as their own and the advertising that accompanies it. Everyone is riding their coat tails, so to speak.
In a perfect world they could wait for Broadband to catch up but that might mean Apple, Google, Sony or even Samsung gets the drop on them. And they are hoping to make it desirable and economically attractive enough that ISPS and governments are pushing for it as well. Microsoft isn't just a game company, they are a big market player that makes huge waves that affect peoples day to day lives. Or at least they aspire for that relevance again.
Hey look another article that can't distinguish "always on" and "always online." Becomes even more clear when he confusingly then suggests all the devices will have offline modes. And don't get me started on that "likely have high speed cable connections" quip, as if that suddenly makes them reliable or something.

Folks, the next Xbox is going to require an always-on Internet connection. I dont know the specifics of what that means, but as I explained on this weeks What The Tech podcast, which was recorded on Friday instead of the usual Tuesday because of my travel earlier in this week, this piece of information had been communicated to me, along with some other relevant tidbits, in January. Its true.

Always-on DRM or always-online DRM is a form of digital rights management (DRM) that requires a consumer to remain connected to a server, especially through an internet connection, to use a particular product.

He says all the devices will have an offline mode though.. which directly contradicts any "always online" DRM.I think the article is clear, but people are using "always on" to mean "always online".
This is probably what's likely happening. An offline state to do offline stuff which is pretty much listening to music, managing storage and looking at pictures. Was the article that was a catalyst for this thread also confusing the two?
"If there isn't a connection, no games or apps can be started"
"If the connection is interrupted then after a period of time-currently three minutes -the game/app is suspended and the network troubleshooter started."
The fact that Sweet Billy kicked off so soon after this article & the discussion that surrounded it, certainly put some meat on that rumour.
He says all the devices will have an offline mode though.. which directly contradicts any "always online" DRM.
That's confusing within itself.

But the apps platform on these systems—which will be replicated on the Windows 8-based next Xbox—assumes a connection.
This is Paul Thurrot we are talking about here.. someone who is one of the most reliable sources on Microsoft, the man who said that the conference was delayed to May 21st and someone who is dedicated to covering Microsoft and has done multiple books on all the versions of Windows. I read the article and he knows it's always on DRM. He also never suggested that high speeds make anything reliable.
Offline modes are in reference to other Windows 8 devices, NOT durango.
Almost 10.000 posts? Damn, has this idiot said anything, an apology or something, you know, for being stupid and throwing stupid analogies.
Well I hope he does (but hopefully it doesn't come to that). He was foolish to think he could post like other twitter users, I know that, but it WAS just a bad decision, not an evil deed.
Amazing that at the start of this gen Oblivion getting 10,000 posts was a big deal. Either this community has grown a lot in the past few years or Microsoft better hope their console being always online isn't true.
At this point I am very concerned that if the console is always online then a group like Anonymous is going to bring down the network in the name of "justice" or "consumer protection". So even if I was o.k. with always online (which I am not) then I wouldn't be getting this system anyway.
This sounds like it's going to fucking suck.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01qrzaZg7_g#t=54m44
Paul Thurrott on the recent What the Tech Podcast mentioned that:
- New Xbox 360 releasing for $99 as a competitor to things like Roku.
- Durango will be expensive 500 dollars, 300 with a subscription.. "that kind of thing" (a guess perhaps?)
- Durango notes say it "must be internet connected to use" but Thurrot himself says he doesn't know what the specific details are.
Anyways, I'm not sure how I feel about the prospect that Orth may have been fired... it's a little much imho. The public shaming, on the other hand, was well-deserved and an appropriate level of punishment for his ignorant and offensive tweets. Making those tweets on an account where he listed his position as a Microsoft creative director was a blunder.

Also, another insinuation that the event has been moved to May.
That price speculation doesn't instill confidence in me for the PS4's price. :/
Well, they said we won't be seeing $599. But if Microsoft is doing $499, I can see Sony doing it too. Sony is including a 3D camera with every box too (required for log in), not just MS with Kinect.Everything I have seen from Sony and the PS4 so far installs me with confidence in knowing they have learned from their mistakes.
I'm still optimistic because the PS4 doesn't have to pack a Kinect 2.0 in every box. That price speculation doesn't instill confidence in me for the PS4's price. :/

Not much room for interpretation..
Don't you guys go to a park or beach or something when your internet connection goes down? Who'd want to play games in that situation?

Then there's obviously the RAM. I can see MS doing anywhere from $399 to $499 for the real deal, but I have no idea how big of losses Sony will be willing to take.
That has by no means been confirmed. We'd certainly throw a fit over that too, if true. They already said the PSEye will be required to log in as it detects your face/controller.

First I've heard.Doesn't it have that camera thing packed in with every PS4? And isn't it required?
^^^
Yea the PSEye.
Yeah... WTF...
