the heatsink would create air movement.

you would just need a small space above the heatsink to bring in more air.
Doesn't look like such a small space in the diagram. More like you'll need to have a grill there for the cooler to suck air from the outside.

I still think fans in tablets are the wrong direction to take anyway.

yes, of course it creates air movement, but not the type that would pull cool air into one part of the chassis while expelling the hot exhaust through another. i don't even know how a shroud could be introduced here without introducing a fair bit of wind noise, let alone how it could be designed to separate the hot exhaust from being recycled back into HSF's intake.

this design isn't happening any time soon for tablets, slates or laptops.

Because Samsung and Microsoft are best buddies:

Samsung Said to Plan Windows RT Tablet for October Debut

Samsung Electronics Co. (005930), the largest phone maker, will release a tablet that features Microsoft Corp. (MSFT)’s Windows RT software when the operating system debuts, people with knowledge of the matter said.

Samsung has made a handheld computer built on Windows RT, the first version of Windows that works on ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) technology, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans haven’t been made public. Windows RT devices will be released in October, one person said.

Samsung Electronics will release a tablet that features Microsoft's Windows RT software when the operating system debuts, people with knowledge of the matter said.

The decision to support Windows RT follows Samsung’s earlier announcement that it will back another version of Windows. It’s a boon to Microsoft’s effort to use multiple versions of its flagship Windows operating system to challenge Apple Inc. (AAPL) in tablets. Microsoft suffered a setback last week when Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ), the world’s largest computer maker, said it won’t back Windows RT from the get-go.

Hewlett-Packard plans to introduce a tablet with Windows 8, the version of the software that works only on so-called x86 chips, made by Intel Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD)

Windows RT is the first mainstream computer operating system from Microsoft to be built for a touch-screen device and work on the energy-sipping chips typically used in smartphones. Most traditional desktop computers are powered by x86 processors.

Samsung’s Windows RT tablet will feature Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM)’s Snapdragon processor, the people said. Windows RT has created an opportunity for phone-chip makers Qualcomm, Texas Instruments Inc. (TXN) and Nvidia Corp. (NVDA) to compete against Intel and AMD for orders in the computer industry.

That would make three Windows RT devices at launch. Not exactly impressive.

I'm sure we'll find out more closer to launch. I believe Microsoft has placed a number of restrictions on OEMs (the number of tablets, whether they work with Qualcomm, TI, NVIDIA, and so on) so the number isn't necessarily indicative of a lack of interest from OEMs.

Because quantity is better than quality, right?

Is this still related to the "HP doesn't want to make Windows RT tablets" thing? Because Windows Weekly seemed to be the sensible voice in the argument here.

Microsoft already shut out HTC from making a Windows RT tablet. HP has directly said they were never planning an RT tablet for launch in the first place, long before Surface was announced.

Maybe, you know, it's exactly like Microsoft said in their very first blog post about ARM? There is a small quantity of devices by design, so that the experience can be made perfect on each of them, instead of there being a huge deluge of RT devices from every manufacturer under the sun.

Just like Android devices, every single device requires significantly customized firmware and software drivers to get it to run properly. Letting anyone who wants to go out and make an RT device is a disaster in the making.

I'm sorry, I really didn't want to come over that negative. You probably got used to it, so I can't blame you.

I just wish there was more momentum behind Windows RT, because I want the market for ARM tablets to be more competitive. I should've said that, instead of putting a somewhat passive-aggressive one-liner under the article.

P.S
thanks for making shit laptops that look like some kind of inbred child of a family orgy. here's to another decade of shit we have to put with.

Sounds like Microsoft expects to sell a couple million Surface's in the next year.

From the World Partner Conference keynote today

9:45 a.m.: Ballmer: In the next 12 months, forecast is for 375 million new Windows PCs to be sold. Emphasizes the opportunity of not just the large Windows install base but the run rate.

Ballmer says Surface, while a leading device, is "a design point. It will have a distinct place. ... The importance of thousands of partners will not diminish.... We may sell a few million of the 375 million" but need diversity of devices.

Believe it or not, there are markets that consist of people who are not mothers.
Dads?

In seriousness though (and in recent experience retail was inadequate there anyway) I'd think the bigger problem may be being limited to the Microsoft store online too I presume. Then again maybe most people buy Dell/HP computers directly from them and so it's a moot point.

Who the hell buys computers in a store anymore.

Alot of people . Think about how many people buy from the apple store , bestbuy and costco/bjs .

I actually rather buy at costco than most online stores. 90 day return policy + free 2 year warrenty and a free 3rd year if you use amex . Its really nice .

Well, the whole big thing about Dell is that you buy their computers almost exclusively online. I mean they do have retail partnerships, but it's always been a rocky thing that they haven't relied on much. So that'd be a fair guess. ;)

Really gutted about the Pro versions release date. An October release would have been perfect for me as I need an ultrabook type device as close to the start of my 3rd year of uni as possible. As I need something I can install software on I guess I will have to give the RT version a pass, macbook air / asus ultrabook here I come.

I think the danger of stuff like the Nexus 7 and the rumored "mini iPad" is that people will continue to see tablets as a cheap supplemental device rather than as a replacement for their desktop or laptop. Microsoft has a good value proposition for people looking to replace their current system, but for people that just want a cheap on-the-go solution for e-mail and web browsing it will be way too expensive.

I can understand buying Apple computers in a store - your customization options on a Mac are really limited anyway, and their online site charges you for sales tax no matter what. I don't get why anyone would go to retail for a PC though. For a Windows machine, customization is much better online and you can probably weasel your way around sales tax (which is not cheap on a $500+ machine).

Is this the post that got Copernicus banned, or is he like Drinky Crow? A poster that's not banned but just looks like it?

I've seen his banned name tag in like... pretty much every current thread that I've been browsing today.

He got banned because he told blackace to ban himself for being wrong about a Kanye West album.

What do you guys think of the news EU is looking into Windows RT not allowing third party bowsers?

The argument used to be that "Apple doesn't allow it either" but now Apple allow Chrome on iPad. What's the new argument going to be? IMy main problem with this MS policy is that MS uses "battery and security" reasons to not allow alternate browser. I think MS shouldn't allow to use "battery" as an excuse to cockblock other browsers.

What if somebody port Lynx to Windows RT and prove that it uses less power than IE? If MS only concentrate on the security argument and actually allow browsers that pass certain security audit than I don't have problem with this policy.

(In true I am convinced MS won't sell any RT tablet so this is purely an academic discussion.)

New to this thread, but the Surface Pro should be a viable replacement for a laptop right?

Also another question, since Windows 8 will be out on October 26th, when can we expect Surface RT/Pro? Really hoped for a Pro xmas release.

That is incorrect. Chrome on iPad is nothing but a UI skin around the default Safari rendering engine. Google can do the exact same thing on Windows RT if they want to - simply use the Trident rendering engine and wrap it with Chrome syncing and other UI elements.

Pro isn't out till 2013. Only RT this year.

Fuck that. Oh well. They did say 3 months after RT, so I'll be fine with a Feb. release.
