Microsoft to add Bing adverts to Windows 8.1 Search results

This is just snide.

For what it's worth, I don't care that its an option or easily avoided by changing avoiding a function of the OS to get around Microsoft peddling ads. I don't like ads being peddled to me on my OS. As I said it's just another reason for me, amongst many, not to use Windows 8. In my eyes there are far too many things like this I have to turn a blind eye to or workaround. Ubuntu does a similar thing with Amazon and its Lens search and I'm not using Ubuntu any more either. Coincidence? No, it's one of a few reasons I stopped using it.

I await an OS that doesn't allow you to install web browsers or any other software for a pure ad-free experience.

When you first install the Windows 8.1 preview build, it asks you if you'd like to see Bing results in your system wide search. If they make it clear that the Bing option is ad supported or includes sponsored results when presenting you the options in the RTM, this won't be an issue at all.

Now, you still can't opt out of ads in any of the Bing or Xbox apps, like Maps, News, Travel, Music, or Video.

Well I'm sorry if you felt it was, but I was just telling it like it is. This isn't exactly a 100 page thread where you could easily miss a little detail. The situation was already explained on the first page and the first half of this one, so I'd have expected people to realise. Maybe I just went about it the wrong way.
The situation wasn't explained it was put in a certain light by you and other posters. I didn't agree with your viewpoint. We simply have a different opinion. That's ok.
As for your main point, I just can't understand how you can let an optional feature prevent you from using an entire operating system. You obviously have other reasons, and I'm sure most of them are valid, but this one? I just can't understand it.
You cant understand it because you don't want to. I've told you it was one reason among many and you even repeated that in your post above but here you are discounting my opinion on the matter again because you don't understand other people have differing viewpoints. It's a shame you can't understand it but I think you're making a mountain out of a molehill here. It's just a different opinion. What is your stake in this, that is has you questioning others so much?

Can you explain this a bit further and how it relates to the situation in this thread?

I understand perfectly well that we have a difference of opinion. I've already said that I'm sure you have other genuine reasons not to use Windows 8. That's ok.

I guess I'm just curious why this particular thing (something you can easily disable and never see or use) would be one of the reasons why you wouldn't use Windows 8. I know you've explained about "ads being peddled " to you, and that would be a good reason if you couldn't simply disable the feature.

If that's your only reason then fair enough, I guess the conversation is done at this point.

Have a nice day.

Why not? You're just one step away from there.

"I don't care about options, I want everything made right for me out of the box."

Take away the options and you don't have to worry about stumbling on ads.

Ok I'll ask again. What is your point? Please say clearly what you mean without trying to be clever, put words in my mouth or assume what I'm thinking.

Sorry, I can't read minds. If my assumption is wrong then you have to clarify what you're saying. :)

I think I'll just leave it there because I really don't know what you're getting at and to be honest, I think I've spent a reasonable period of time trying to clarify it.

I'm not entirely sure what point you're trying to make. Are you trying to say that app developers shouldn't be able to make some money from their free apps?

No, I'm just adding some info to the thread. I'm not trying to make a statement at all.

Oh boy....

From the same page.

A new OS. An amazing opportunity.

With Windows 8, Microsoft has not only created a sleek, reimagined OS, but an unparalleled opportunity for app developers. Consumers around the world are scooping up Windows 8 licenses by the millions. The Windows Store now ships on every Windows 8 device. Its inventory is soaring. And every Windows 7 PC is upgradable to Windows 8. The revenue potential is clear.

I thought I was the one being snide?

Again what's your point. So developers can put ads into their free apps, just like they can do on nearly every platform on Earth. So what?

I'm not making a statement by posting this information. I said 'Oh boy..' because you're riding my dick hard. It's getting weird.

I'm not totally sure where one or two people on this thread are getting their information, but this image:

Is clearly presented as typical of 8.1 Smart Search results (not specifically "web searches") in several articles on this subject.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/2043518/windows-8-1-smart-search-will-show-you-bing-ads.html

Those are web results, the default smart search option is to search everywhere, on you system files, apps, inside the apps themselves, bing context search and them regular web results. For that specific query (aaa travel) I get no other results other than the web search so they come first, but for other stuff you will get plenty of other results showing up before the web results.

BTW, the same search on my computer didn't show any adds, it was just the results themselves. (Not trying to imply anything, just saying because I find that interesting, maybe the ads are tailored to the user).

If simply asking a few questions on a forum equates to "riding your dick hard" then I'd hate to know what you'd feel like in an actual serious discussion .

I don't care that you don't like ads, who does like ads? This whole discussion stemmed from the idea that this completely optional feature that can easily be disabled should be added to your list of reasons why you wouldn't get Windows 8. That's it. I just wanted to know why, all I got was "peddling ads" which doesn't make sense in this instance.

I couldn't care less about your opinion of ads as a whole.

So we've been trialing the 8.1 preview at work. The ads only seem to be there on the desktop and laptop installations. Perhaps tablets don't have the screen real estate for it.

Anyway, the ads run the length of the bottom and right side of the search results. The apparent way to turn them off is to "buy the store app". Which is just a fantastic idea considering how much people shelled out for the OS in the first place.

PC Settings --> Search and Apps --> Get search and web results from Bing --> Off

I don't use Windows 8. Nobody does.

I use Windows 8. Microsoft's problem is they have given almost no one in the consumer space a reason to like them, unlike Google or Apple. People hate Windows 8 on reaction because Microsoft has shat the bed in creating goodwill for their last few products.

Question, since I'm still rocking Windows 7.

I'm assuming this is a kind of unified search, bringing together results from your computer and from the internet. Is there a way to override non-PC part to use Google or other search engines?

Thanks, sorry if it's a dumb question and all. :)
