Microsoft: We are actively investing in our future first-party consoles and devices designed, engineered and built by Xbox.

Pretty much, it was supposed to tape-out in Q4.

Because AMD needs the commitment to justify their R&D

AFAIK the handheld was cancelled because AMD wanted a commitment of 10m+ units to justify making a dedicated SoC, but with Steam Deck only selling ~5 million units and ASUS ROG/Lenovo Legion only selling 1-2 million MS didn't want to take the risk.
10m is a big ask in their current situation, I would also opt out tbh

First and current XBox were excellent hardware. 360 seemed cheap, XBone should have been a higher-end SSD gaming thoroughbred, that's where MS fukd up, which dragged to this gen.

Bro the clowns running Microsoft Gaming are nowhere near Nintendo's level.

This is almost insulting to Miyamoto and Iwata tbh.
Exactly. N64, GC, and WiiU weren't really massive hits for Nintendo sales wise, but no one got the feeling back then that they were in trouble like MS is with Xbox.

Nintendo are masters of getting themselves out of a pickle and adapting.
Microsoft aren't. As we've seen the last 10-15 years.

There might be some type of device with Xbox branding on, but it's hard to see any upside in developing a proper next gen console unless they return to exclusives.

The whole point of the "custom" design is to include the backwards compatibility IP for older Xboxes so they don't need to relicense everything as a PC game (not going to happen). So if they drop the custom part in favour of a general purpose APU, they give up on the backwards compatibility (that's my take).

I mean given what has been happening I can't say they won't have another brain fart and decide to ditch bwc for the next-gen machine - but then it really isn't a console *at all*

RDNA 5 and beyond GPUs should have BC baked in.

Let's not forget the GC was no slouch when compared to the competition at the time, and was 2nd only to Xbox in terms of power, that was the last time Nintendo were actively staying in the horsepower game....fortunately for them the Wii was a massive hit and they bounced back from the Wii U... but for it's time N64 and GC were more than capable in handling the competition from Sony...

Imagine if BOTW and Mario Kart 8 came out on Wii U, PS4, PC and finally Switch instead of Wii U and Switch. Yeah, maybe Xbox can pull off a Nintendo move

Yeah this is obvious to everyone except the big brains at GAF. The second largest market cap company just made a muti-year partnership with AMD and launched their cloud platform out of beta, following a historic acquisition. They are only just getting started.
The second largest market cap company can afford to drop something they invested in and move on when it is clear it is not going to be profitable enough to warrant further investment. They can also lay off the HW division. They love that.

The big brain memes will be glorious in a few months

One can argue mobile or even Zune were far more importnant for MS but both were closed and shuttered without any hesitation. Microsoft can care less about expenses if it makes the corporation more focused and profit-driven mid-term.

Funny that people really think than in a light of AI race Microsoft wouldn't dare to walk back on Xbox console contract because of some termination fees, even if they will cost them a few billions. Xbox Console at this point is net negative anyway, basically dead in retail and worldwide and they will lose more billions even making one regardless. It's easier to write off the whole HW division, cut the losses and then recoup them with SW sales and AI bubble.

Remember the iPhone funeral they staged?

That energy apparently hasn't changed going by the leaked emails from the FTC case.

It ended so well for them then and it seems to be going in the same direction now.

Journos working fast, already articles on your comments

I mean what did you expect them to say...it's clear they are pulling back from consoles by the second half of this gen as soon as natella realized game pass didn't deliver. I wish it wasn't so and they pulled off a 360 but after the 800$series x it became clear they don't give a shit sustaining the console hardware longterm. They are fleecing their diehard fanbase for all of their worth as they pull out and doubling the game pass price and the first day games wall basically tells their fanbase more than empty words ever will.
