Minecraft passes 1 million sales.

Word of mouth in the age of the Internet is better than a 100 million dollar ad campaign.

Of course, if you spend 100 million dollars on ads, and then sell a million copies at 15 bucks a pop, you're kind of still behind.

haha, I meant in terms of exposure (although half jokingly)

Now if I could only find a good SMP server with some of the awesome mods out there and people I can trust. I'm working on a Roman village on a normal SMP server with no cheating to get supplies. So satisfying, but I'd like to have another server with the cool mods on there.

Now back to making my texture pack. :D

My friend bought this today and depending on his views I'll pick it up so we can play on teh same server.

My Game of the Year. Very happy to see the success for an independent game like this one that has a ton of ambition but also superb execution.

Great news.

I really like Minecraft's single player but I'm not that big on the multiplayer. I feel like multiplayer is too much craft and not enough mine. It seems like people turn off a lot of the core mechanics that make the single player game interesting. Presumably, I'm playing on the wrong servers but spawning kits and making an indestructible, non-griefable building doesn't have any appeal to me if there's no risk to my actions.

Run your own server. Invite friends. Have fun. This is what I plan on doing soon because I have the same issues with multiplayer.

This game is good. This game is bad.
I love this game. I hate this game.

Minecraft is one of the most addicting games you'll play. But its quality has been overstated.

The game's concept has some sort of wildfire quality when you tell people about it.

A friend of mine saw a Minecraft video in my YouTube favorites and started asking me about it.

Friend: "What's this?" *click*
Me: "Oh, that's Minecraft."
Friend: "What do you do in it?"
Me: "You build stuff, explore, make things, it's a lot of fun. At night monsters come out and you have to build a shelter."
Friend: "So you can build like castles and stuff?"
Me: "Oh yeah, you can build anything you want really."

When he got home he immediately bought the game and we played together on my server with another friend of mine who convinced ME to buy it. We all had a crazy amazing adventure. We found this awesome cave that just kept going and going, and eventually we found gold and diamond (my first time seeing it). We were flipping out.

I really felt a sense of discovery. It's a pretty interesting feeling to have considering it's a video game.

Dwarf Fortress is still better.

If the game wasn't ASCIImagination, the guy would be a millionaire.

He's also a little cooler than Notch since he lives off of donations. JUST SAYIN'

Excellent. My friends and I started up a server back a while back after I had convinced around 4 people to get it. There are like 30 people on the server now through word of mouth and I don't know half of them. It's amazing how a simple concept can captivate so many.

Congrats to Mojang.

I don't think I'm ever going to enjoy a game that's so convoluted I need to make sure my characters keep their fingernails trimmed.

Still super angry with myself that I missed out on the alpha sale. Complacency sucks. Now I'll likely never own it considering the paid updates.

Snakes on a what

Totally not applicable. That was internet pre-hype, which means nothing. It wasn't like the movie came out, and was so good, that the internet word of mouth drove tons of customers to the moive.

This is more of a situation where something is so good, you tell your online friends that they MUST try it. I don't think ANYONE did that with Snakes on a Plane

I can see how that'd be a drawback if it's something you don't do in real life.

Hopefully with the money he has now he can make a game now.
No. MINECRAFT FOREVER. Back to work, notch. What did I pay you for?

If there's an option in Dwarf Fortress for all your dwarves to bite their fingernails out of habit to trim then I certainly missed it.

From something I wrote on another message board when someone asked something like that:

Notch said:
Buying the game during beta will include all updates up until release, of course, and bug patches will be free.
It does not say that if you buy the beta, you will have to buy the full version. In addition, as I posted, Notch has said the following in the last couple of weeks on Twitter, assuming he doesn't go back on what he said:

Notch said:
Anyway, buying during beta = get everything up to and including release version for free. Expansions might cost.

Notch said:
If you buy the game, regardless of when, you never have to pay again to get the full version.

I think those three quotes were from his blog and/or Twitter, but I don't have links at hand to prove it.

Sanjay, his newly formed company is working on another game at the same time that he's working to keep improving Minecraft, in case you didn't know.

I really fail to see how your awkward habits as a person make Dwarf Fortress any less appealing than a game which has 3d ducks as an update that people look forward to.

All I'm saying is that it's pretty clear that if Dwarf Fortress had better visuals people would sell better than Minecraft.

Awesome.

Today was also my first venture into the nether. I have the game for a long time now, but I wanted to end my half castle/ half cave before doing it. And it was horrible! Those fucking infernal sounds....are horrible.

Also had a couple of jumps with the fucking spiders. Oh I hate them soooo much.

Eh...I think a huge part of the appeal of Minecraft is the tactile feeling of interaction that you have with the world, of building a castle while fighting off monsters.
Dwarf Fortress is fun, but at its heart its a ultra-complex management and building sim, which is always going to be niche.

Still bums me out, Blizzard, especially since the wound isn't even one month passed. My jealousy will probably get the better of me and I'll never end up buying it. That's just me.
