Mio - Memories in Orbit Launch Trailer

Folks praising this to be a better metroidvania than hollow knight?
Wouldn't surprise me at all. I'm playing Shady Part of Me now. Their last game.

Its great. Just constant perspective puzzles with one character walking in 3D and your shadow being a 2D platformer on the walls. They clearly understand game design, and thats on their earlier low budget game.

Just 5 seconds into the trailer you can see everything is modeled in cell shaded 3D and is a lot more ambitious than Hollow Knight visually.

On my list to play soon. Already downloaded.

Installed on my LeGo2 for later. It being a mid length metroidvania is music to my ears. Priority is rushing to beat Citizen Sleeper 2 though before its removed on gp.

Looks good. Does it have combat? There wasn't any in the trailer.

Face off a diverse array of over 30 enemy units and 15 formidable guardian bosses. From the relentless Mosquito to the menacing Scarecrow, confront a variety of deadly adversaries each with their own distinct fighting styles and movement patterns. Use your arsenal of powers to adapt to every encounter. Evade foes using your Hook, unleash orbs as powerful projectiles, and even create decoy clones to strike from unexpected angles.

NOW I understand, my goodness. The music is so similar, I was thinking that could not be coincidental.

Quite a change of pace, from a cozy relaxed game to this. However, you can see the influences in the music, art style and mood.

I'm loving the game. Quite probably it will make it in my Metroidvania top tier list, right below HK. Though clearly inspired by Silksong, it plays completely different and has a very strong game direction.

How is the difficulty?

Very tough, close to Silksong. It plays beautifully too. Just a few examples:

- You die in 3-4 hits. Pattern recognition for every enemy is a must.

- There are no healing items. You can only heal at fix stations across the vessel.

- There are very few respawn points. You need to open secret passages and parkour routes to traverse the map efficiently.

- Platforming starts easy but gets challenging after you acquire a couple of skills.

- The amulet system is very well balanced and/but restrictive. You will always leave something good out. Checking your own stats is locked behind an amulet.

Picked it up this morning and been playing non stop. Yes this one is getting the correct praise- it's really something special.

Game does have some unique difficulty options. You can make it so ordinary enemies don't attack you unless you hit them first.
You can also enable a setting that will make the bosses progressively easier the more you die to them.
I know most of gaf seems to hate difficulty options in games but I salute devs that include them. 9 Sols is another great example.

I didnt know this. Anyway, I only tweak standard difficulty when a game is janky or unfair, which is not the case. I'm the stubborn type, taking 9 hours to beat Eigong or +20K deaths in Celeste, but I understand people who dont want to suffer this much.

I made some progress this evening. Platforming is getting tight. These devs also adopted Team Cherry's annoying flying enemies. These mechanic mosquitoes, man...

Stumbled onto this on Gamepass and installed it while waiting for Ninja Gaiden Ragebound to download. Been playing pretty much nonstop today. It's phenomenal! No idea how big it is but I'm really enjoying it so far. 👌

only a couple hours in but this is gorgeous looking, honestly the best visuals ive seen in a game like this.

Also, it's hard. Like Lategame Hollow knight hard for sure.

Just wanted to come in and say that this game is fantastic and I have played about 10 hours straight today so far. I went into it completely blind having not even heard of it and it's knocked my socks off. I dont understand people who say its hard though. It feels like if you have played any metroidvania in the last 20 years that you should be more than ok with this. So far I haven't had to look up a single thing regarding where to go next. Fantastic game.

Thanks for the impressions, I've added it to my wishlist. Hope it's good!

And if the game is bad, I'll hunt you down! :lollipop_content:

Difficulty ramps up in the last hours of the game, specially when you go for the true ending. It's also when the game becomes truly memorable, like those places in HK/Silksong everyone talks about.

It's an incredible game, seriously. The map/world design is a true challenger to Team Cherry's.

Story, music, vibes, bosses and world design is top of the class. Criminally underrated.

Those are some big words man, I'll make sure to check it out since HK and Silksong are among my favorites in the genre.

This also reminds that I still have to play Nine Sols. Too many games for so little time!

Another awesome game, Nine Sols. I had it right below HK/SK. Now MIO takes that place, with Nine Sols very close.

They are very different, though. NS is combat-focused and its narrative is very explicit, with plenty of dialogues and cutscenes for the genre. Fortunately, the story is really good. It's very linear for a MV (progression is pushed by the narrative that tells you where to go at each moment, with just a few branching paths here and there)

MIO is the opposite. Combat is basic and only gets hard in the boss fights. Exploration and platforming are stellar. You can tell very smart people designed its map. The whole place is interconnected and loops around itself in very creative ways. My only complaint is that there are very few NPCs and the story and lore are too good to be told in such a cryptic way. I had to watch a recap video after getting the platinum and was very impressed by the level of worldbuilding its devs went for. I wished it was a bit more explicit in some original concepts that are not easy to figure out.

I enjoyed my time with the game. It didn't overstay it's welcome like if felt HK did (which I think they did a better job with in Silk Song) and as others mentioned I thought the design elements were well done.

Its also $30 bucks for the switch 2 version and it is not a keycard game (another bonus) but is almost half that on steam (well...its $17.99 with bundle pricing).

Thanks man! Appreciate the impressions.

You've convinced me to try this game as soon as I get some proper free time to sink my teeth into it.
