Missing UK 3 year old.

It's not often you hear the assembled media gasp at a press conference.

The person detained is the child's mother too. Horrible.

I don't mean to seem callous, but...

Who selects which missing child gets media attention and which ones get forgotten?

I felt the same way about the entire Madeleine Mccann circus and how attention is fixated on one of many unfortunate and sad cases.

This is what makes the US sound worse, this is like every other week. Anyone ever get that crazy amber alert text/vibrate sound?

Body found in Fife? Fuck me, that's a long way away from where she reported him missing. The search has been all focused on this side of the river and within the city.

Where are you reading this?, all I can find is that a person has been detained.

Every news source that is not the BBC is reporting it's the mother. BBC won't report on tips or leads, they're only allowed to report what the police officially announce.

Hate to say it but when this story was shown to me this morning I instantly said the mother did it. I'd be surprised if she didn't have help though.

Had the exact same gut feeling with the McCann case too....but lets not go there.

Terrible news.

It did seem fishy as the kid wouldn't have been able to get out of the house, but still, the mother? If true, that's fucking horrible.

Very sad.

I can't say I'm surprised it was probably the mother, I was thinking the same thing when he was reported missing.

okay im really dumb and all but im assuming he's dead cause of use of the words 'found a body'.

anyway what gets me about this statement

Assistant Chief Constable Malcolm Graham, of Police Scotland, told a press conference that Mikaeel's family had been informed of the recovery of a body and the investigation was continuing.

He also thanked rescue teams and the public for their "fantastic response" in helping to search for the missing boy.

wowe police give press statement saying WELL DONE GOOD JOB MY TEAM forbeingtoolate. such flattery. much honest.

edit: OHHH MY GOD MALCOM GRAHAM he was the popo that visited us in school loads

And female too.

Because if you're a man and an ethnic minority, you're just a foreigner that needs to get out of Britain...

...or something like that.

Really shocked to hear this regardless.

This probably isn't the best thread for this discussion given the kid in question is an ethnic minority boy.

The child could have been killed before being reported missing. Not every situation is redeemable and you can't say 'fuck you idiots' to a group of people who volunteered.

Poor little kid. Guess I was naive hoping he'd be found safe and well. Suppose I didn't want to think about the worst possible scenario.

Indeed - the child had not been at nursery for a month. This points towards whatever happening predating any kind of search.

Re the gasps at the press conference, Sky News had been interviewing some locals and were told to report for the press conference - those locals followed and they were the people that gasped when the news was announced.

Ya know I joked in the office the other day saying "I wonder what relative it was" shame its turned out it might be true.

Apologies for the cynical attitude but I am always under the impression that it is a slow news week whenever a missing child case gets round the clock coverage. However I don't know how often a child in the UK goes missing so maybe the news outlets do follow and report on every case when it happens.

I have heard about the "only report about cute white girls" decision before.

Link to the gasp?

Fucking hell, did you even read the OP? It's an ethnic little boy. (He is cute tho).

Unfortunately in these cases it often is a relative or friend that's involved. This story is very sad, but one that we seem to hear all too often (at least here in the UK).

As soon as I heard about this I instantly thought it would be at least someone in the family.

A three year old wouldn't put his coat and shoes on and go outside in the middle of the night. Likewise, there wasn't a break in so couldn't have been a random stranger and in any case if it was they would have had to know him and target him if they wanted to kidnap him.

I think maybe he died a while ago and they panicked and tried to hide his body in their old house before reporting him 'missing'.

I was following the story since first heard the boy was missing. Fucking horrible to now see this, was hoping for good news.

Apparently he got out of bed, dressed himself, got out of the flat, went downstairs and pressed the button to open the door to the building. And there were people who thought he just walked off. It was clear that something fucked up happened.

So the mum has been charged in connection with her son's death...
