Yuuuuuup.

(34% of America votes in 2014 leading to shit Congress)
People who didn't vote in 2014: Obviously the system is broken

Presidential turnout is a joke too. Less than 60% come the fuck on. I know there are many people for whom voting is really an inconvenience but too many people just don't give a shit.

1. Make voter registration mandatory (the choice to vote is still up to the citizen)
2. Make Election Day a national holiday, taking place on the 1st or 2nd Saturday of November

Will never happen though.

Sure, we'll just get 2/3 of the two-party congress to propose it and 3/4 of the states to approve it and we'll get right on that.

So how do you feel about us abolishing elections and making the Presidency tied to a trial by combat? You know, while we're talking about irrelevant shit that is technically possible but also won't happen?

Besides, removing the majority requirement would just make it possible for us to have an election where Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton split 60 percent of the vote evenly, and Donald Trump waltzes into the white house with 33 percent of the vote. Sounds awesome to me!

A. He said you should not that you could.

B. You've obviously never heard of the instant run-off system. It elects one winner from many candidates. The way it works is everyone ranks the candidates by preference. First the first preference votes are counted. If no candidate gets more than 50% of the vote then the candidate with the least votes is eliminated and the eliminated candidate's votes are redistributed to the their second preference candidates. If there is still no majority then the process is repeated until a candidate gets greater than 50% of the vote at which point (s)he is elected.

Donald Trump is going to destroy and humiliate any third party candidate proped up by the establishment. Anyone with half a brain would know this is career suicide.

Oh I've heard of it.

It's just fucking stupid that every conversation about what might happen in this election ends up with people going, "well instead of talking about this election, first overhaul your entire political system."

Shit's irrelevant.

Not like Mitt's got anything left going for him.

He's already run for President twice and lost. He's pretty much done anyway.

Might as well get this over with so he can retire and get a jumpstart on the public speaking circuit.

I come across way too many people who wear that shit as a badge of honor, proudly spouting how little fucks they give about politics and elections while barfing out "everyone's corrupt anyway" and "it's not like it really matters".

I notice this sentiment a lot in these threads but I remember reading a USAtoday article back when the tea party took over congress and it compared what they ran on and what they did when they got in congress and there was no correlation. That is a prime example of tea party republicans going out and voting and getting the candidates they want and then said candidates passing laws that focused on aiding the people that donated big dollars to their campaign.

Wether you agree or not polling shows most people understand or believe that voting is just an official means for corporations to install leaders to do their bidding and that it doesn't matter who you vote for that the politicians are only looking out for their donors in the end.

Unfortunately people don't believe in the system and I can't blame them for being apathetic. If you notice the candidates with the most enthusiastic voters are usually those that are railing against the status quo.

You'd think Mitt would have learned after watching his dad be annihilated by Goldwater back in the day would have thought him a good lesson about staying out in a year when the masses are pissed the fuck off. History has a way of repeating itself though, so it would be almost Shakespearean to see Mitt's carrier go down in flames the same way his dad's did.
