MK Shaolin Monks thread

It's out now. Both EB and Gamestop are shipping and many people have already picked up their copy. I'm getting mine this afternoon. I haven't played the demo or read many previews so I'm going in blind without spoilers.

Apparently the full version of MK II arcade is an unlockable.

Yeah it was a big surprise. Last night Gamestop was calling people with an automated message saying it'd be out today, but actual GS employees said it was a mistake.

Crap, no luck. Both EB and Gamestop said "on monday" but then I told the guy at Gamestop about the early release and after checking the computer he said that the date was indeed changed to the 16th but that it was probably an error since they didn't get it today.

Anybody know if EB and Gamestop get shipments of merchandise on saturdays?

Games that try to sneak a release past reviewers tend to suck big-time, as this game most certainly will. I would wait on it, but if you choose not to then enjoy your coasters.

You play the demo that came in last month's OPM? Game was hot (especially for a platformer under the MK banner)

Er, have you played the demo? It was smoking, please keep up on current events before opening your (figurative) mouth.

In this thread, we pretend the man with the generic evil/emo name is the paragon of good taste!

I don't think that's the case. They just had it ready early and shipped it. The official release date is still next week. The last few MK games have been praised by most of the press, why would they be afraid?

I got my copy.

Yea, I'd like to hear how this game unfolds beyond the demo level. Demo was a lot of fun, and definately more polished than the last couple fighting games.

Just the feel of it. The button layout and long combos are like it and the way the levels are set up, linear paths with some jumping. Like an old beat em up in 3D.

There's some really clever uses of environmental interaction. Throwing bad guys into a catapult which then shoots them in the air. Fighting in a cave and uppercutting them into stalactites.

They really went all out on references and nods to the old games. All the old grunts are in. I flipped out when I heard Kung Lao do his goofy yell when he throws people in MK II.

No, the "dun dun dun!!!" is more like the one from Deception. Too bad it doesn't do that moaning sound in MK II arcade.

Kung Lao's first upgrade for his hat is ricocheting. You throw it and it bounces off the walls cutting off heads. So cool looking.

I had to open this gate by doing a Test Your Might!

I already beat the game! Not counting secrets it's only like 6 hours long.

As far as the story goes I'm so disappointed I don't know where to start. It basically ruins the MK II story and the ending has a nonsensical plot twist that is a huge continuity mistake.

Bummer, dude... :/

The gameplay is surprisingly fun though. It's basically a rip off of God of War with a bit of Metroid's world design. The game is sort of non-linear. The portal acts as a hub and you can go anywhere you want, but you need certain abilities to get far. It's like Metroid where you'll see a wall you can climb hours before you get that power up, then when you do get it you backtrack to reach a new area. Also most of the boss battles are good, with little cinematic gimmick things to play with like God of War's boss in the hades level. At one point you fight Scorpion and he'll jump up on this platform where you can't reach him and start throwing his spear. You have to catch his own spear and yank him off the platform back down to you. In a battle with Mileena & Jade you can knock them into little cages and then do a Test Your Might to release these spikes to damage them. Lots of levels require you to throw bad guys into fun stuff like chains and spikes.

There's some really cool moments that hardcore fans will love. We FINALLY see Kahn without his helmet, at last we know how Sub-Zero got his scar, and Kintaro's introduction is awesome.

Oh, and one great thing about the story is the portrayal of Cage. It's based on the first movie. He is a full on joke character in this and has some good lines and some that are so bad they're funny.

Kung Lao: We have to rescue Kitana!!!!
Cage: A girl?.......... is she hot?

Thanks Anyanka for the impressions. It sounds really cool, even if it is short. I'd probably end up playing it multiple times.

Sub's scar......
is from Kung Lao's hat. Sub attacks them while looking for his brother, thinking they are bad guys.

I don't think the short length is that much of a problem. The gameplay is old school beat em up. It's repetitive. There's really no reason for it to be a long game. If you're the kind of person who plays a game once and puts it away I could see it being an issue, but I'm going to beat it over and over again. I'll probably even start a new game as Liu Kang tonight and I really want to get a co-op game going. It seems like it'd be great in two player.

I just watched the trailer, and the game looks like alot of fun.

Funny, I wouldn't have given it a look if not for this thread. haven't even seen a screenshot until now.

Isnt Kung lao Lui kang's great grand father or something? how is he still alive?

Same name, different person. The only other storyline as to his origin (that I can recall) is that he's just another Shaolin monk.

Got my copy today and the game kicks all sorts of ass.

It's 50% MK fan service and 50% arcade beat 'em up but with a bit of depth. Already did a few crazy combos with air juggles and I haven't even upgraded Kung Lao yet. My favorite combo so far is square x 3, triangle, square x 2 and Kung Lao's spin for the finish.

I'm sure I missed several secrets already since I saw some red glowing MK dragon coins in places that I cannot jump to or access.

The secrets are just laying around everywhere. They're coins you pick up. In hard to reach places, under smashable items or given to you after beating bad guys. It's got a big krypt like thing like MKDA and MKD. I'm not sure if there's like 500 like those but there looks like a lot. I don't know how to get MK II arcade. I beat it and still didn't have it. I think it has something to do with Smoke.

I've always hated how there's two Kung Laos.

What's really stupid is that originally Liu wasn't related to the old champion. He was just the curent temple's chosen one. Then Kung Lao came along in MK II with the backstory of being the last decendent of the old Kung Lao. Now after the movies they occasionally claim Liu is one too which completely defeats the purpose of Kung Lao.

Kung Lao is cool in MKSM. They finally give him a personality instead of just telling us over and over how he's related to the other Kung Lao. He is like a rival to Liu and you can see he is kind of pissed he wasn't chosen to represent the temple in MK1. Sort of arrogant too.

Yeah, I like how he's basically jealous of Liu because him and his ancestors are not getting the deserved respect and recognition, according to him. It would've been cool if this paved the way for a Kung Lao heel turn, probably not since it would screw up the story for Mk3, 4, DA and Deception, but I guess that has never stopped Boon & Co. from rewriting things.
