MK Shaolin Monks thread

Oh man, why didn't they put MK1 too?

I'm missing it since they took it out of Arcade Treasures.
Because it was already an unlockable in MK Deception LE. If you were really a fan you should have that too... :p

I'm a fan of MK1, not MK Deception :)

Actually, I never played it, I never really cared about the series after #4. I picked up Arcade Treasures for #2 and I really like #1, so it'd be cool to have.

Can you still get Deception LE?

I started a new game as Liu Kang. He isn't as fun to use as Kung Lao. It's all because of the hat.

Some of the fatalities are great. Kung Lao has two involving his rabbit friendship.

Games that try to sneak a release past reviewers tend to suck big-time, as this game most certainly will. I would wait on it, but if you choose not to then enjoy your coasters.

8.0

So much for your theory.

Once you beat it and know where to go you can just fly through this. You could probably beat the game in a hour. Maybe less.

The AI is really stupid. I can beat Kintaro without getting hit once.

Whatever.. you unlock it by opening the case... happy? :p

Tried changing the difficulty level?

Just trying to find out if they are stupid or just have levels of stupidity based on the difficulty level.

It's a good version of MK1 too. There's some sound problems and you can't select any options, but it's the best home version.

Brief thoughts on small play....

Intro is great (if extremely bad CG) fan service. And I'm not even much of a fan. MK at best brings out some unknown nostalgia I have for 80's American martial arts film.

Very satsifying fighting. Probably the most satsifying in the sudden glut of beu's released lately. It simultaneously reminds of the archaic dial-a-combo combat of MK and makes such combat easy to use.

Why do so many small, pleasing games have to be marred by a lack of attention to detail? MK Shaolin Monks has rough, crappy hit detection, bad platforming and a myriad of invisible barriers, etc. that make no logical game sense. Why? It doesn't make sense for an established franchise from a major company sporting such an abbreviated length and a $50 price tag to feel this thown together when it comes to polish. You can't imagine complimenting a game team for that sort of ugliness even if a game is an "experiment" by their standard. So I won't.

Based on my game time I'd say a fun 7/10

Is the ending anywhere near as cool as the intro???

No, the big fights at the end are ok but the actual ending isn't much and it has a plot twist at the end that doesn't make sense.

Quan Chi shows up and picks up Shinnok's amulet from Kahn's body....which is a huge error since Chi should have already got the amulet. He got it in MK Mythologies, which is years before MKSM. Kahn had nothing to do with the amulet. It wasn't even in Outworld. Whoever came up with that plot twist screwed up.

I just unlocked MK II. You have to do these missions for Smoke. The final one is cool, it has you going to the Pit II.

It's the exact same MK II from MAT. All the bugs included.

Are evil ways and I the only ones playing this? All the excitment over the opening died fast.

I have over over 100% completion but still have like 13 secrets to find. I think they might all be co-op only.

I wanted to pick it up but I'm trying to hold off on purchases since another TRU "buy two get one" is supposed to be next month. :/

That's 2.1

I wish they'd let you play the old revisions. I already have like 20 versions of 3.1..I want to play 2.1 and 1.4

After the bability you can still move around for a few seconds. You can do just about anything. A fatality, friendship, a special move or even another babaility.

It's not as cool as it sounds. They mostly just crash the game or the opponent explodes and turns back into an adult. Still fun to mess with though.

Anyanka will surely be able to say more, I just remember the first time seeing a Babality was at a Six Flags where someone did one, then a Fatality (like the game let you still move after doing a Babality, so you could just do a Fatality after).

Which one was the SNES one based on? 3.1?

Yeah, the home versions are based on 3.1. 3.1 was the final, and added the Kintaro fatality, second fatalities for Kung Lao & Raiden, Noob Saibot, The deadpool fatality, random select and a few bug fixes.

My favorite old revision MK II glitch is in 1.4. Sub-Zero can do the first part of his deep freeze fatality in the middle of a fight. It's the most broken thing I've ever seen in a fighting game. It's unblockable and it'll hit you if you're jumping or even on the ground. You can just repeat it over and over.

the spin was in an early test version that never made it outside Chicago. There's tons of revisions that never saw public release.

I once blew up one of those big screen cabinets they used to have around the time MKII came out in the arcade. I did this by doing Kitana's Babality over-and-over very rapidly on the 1.2 chipset. All the flashes from the explosion caused the big screen to just POP, never to come back on again. I GFO'ed and came back a few weeks later and the unit was still broken.
It never was repaired.

:lol

I'm headin to fight scorpion now. Wow this game brings back some memories. Anyone who loved MK2 HAS to play this game. :D :D :D

Well I beat it just a few minutes ago with Kung Lao, and like Anya said, the ending is completely unnecessary. It gives me the impression that MK3 and MK4 will never happen(at least not the way it was always written) and instead sets up the Deadly Alliance storyline with Quan Chi.

I was always under the impression that MKII was just a distraction for Raiden and the earthrealm fighters to keep them busy while Shang Tsung's wizards resurrected Sindel's body on Earth and begin the true invasion in MK3.

The last 3 bosses were easy as hell, except for that cheap spinning move the last boss does, it's annoying as hell. It was a fun game though, but I get the feeling I must've missed a lot of stuff since I never once saw Ermac or Smoke. Plus it's really stupid that you cannot play the Versus Kombat mode against the CPU, especially since a lot of characters are unlockable for that mode.

Everyone dying doesn't bother me much since death is such a joke in MK. Even Kahn died at the end of MK II. It's the amulet twist that is such a screw up. I'm not shocked though. The amulet is the ultimate deus ex machina in the MK mythos. It's powers and origins change in every game depending on what the plot requires.

They're doing another Fight Night chat with the developers in a few weeks. Hopefully they'll have an answer for this.

Originally Tsung's plan for MK II was to lure the earth warriors into Outworld where they would enter a second tournament and if they somehow made it to the end they'd surely die at Shao Kahn's hands. Killing the Shaolin Champion and the other heroes would tip the scales towards chaos, allowing Kahn to invade Earth. When Kahn failed and the heroes escaped back to Earth Kahn went with his back up plan, the resurection of Sindel. The whole idea of it being a "distraction" wasn't mentioned until Trilogy when they were summerizing the whole trilogy. That has never really made much sense though. Why would they need to distract the good guys? None of them had any idea Kahn was planning on invading via Sindel being reborn on Earth. Even after II Kung Lao and Liu Kang were surprised when it happened. Only Jax and Sonya seemed to know it was coming.

The thing about Outworld needing to win 10 in a row to get Earth is a retcon. Originally Kahn would be allowed to invade if the furies, positive and negative forces that keep the universe in check, where unbalanced. The Shaolin Tournament wasn't set up by the Elder Gods or any of that. It was just a honorable contest set up by the monks. Tsung was trying to corrupt the Shaolin Tournament to tip the scales towards evil. After the movie they switched to the tourney set up by the Elder gods, 10 in a row crap to make the story simpler I guess.

Actually most of the outworld story is a retcon. MK1 had a really simple story. We didn't even know Tsung was from Outworld and Shao Kahn was never mentioned. He was just corrputing the tournament because...he's a bad dude. There wasn't really much at stake in MK1 when Tobias originally wrote the story. Liu was just trying to get the tournament back in the hands of the monks.

Oh and I was sort of disappointed in the Neatherealm section of the game. It was so short, rushed and tacked on. It would have been a good oppertunity to see more of Shinnok, maybe show a scene of him and Quan Chi scheming for MK4. For such a powerful character Shinnok has really been downplayed. It's all because of his weak appeareance as a boss in MK4. From a story standpoint I've always thought he was pretty cool and build up really well. He has to be strong..the guy fought and killed the devil and took over hell for himself.

Ok I'm like 4 or 5 hours into it and I'm having a good time. Its got that "feel" to it from the days of MK1 and 2. The music, voices, and settings all have that "feel" if you know what I mean.

I really like how interactive the environment can be. The setting-fatalities are the shit. Uppercutting a guy into the mouth of a living tree is something I always wanted to see since the living forest stage debuted in MK2. Like they've said before, its the ultimate MK fan service. :)

Playwise, its kinda like God of War. I managed a 59 hit combo earlier and have been trying to top it since. Don't misunderstand though, this is NOT God of War in the MK universe. It just plays smoothly like GOW. GOW is a much better game though. But still, for being an MK game, this is surprisingly good. I am not positive its worth 50 bucks to anyone who isn't an MK fan, but if you are, you'll dig on it for sure.

I gotta say though, the CG is fucking terrible. So is the story as a whole. All the acting and writing is the worst I've seen since MK: Mythologies. Had they cleaned that shit up, it'd be better off. Plus I hate that all the characters look like Masters of the Universe action figures. They're torsos are all rididculously buffed up, etc. They're huge. Midway needs better character designers.

So far, I'd say its on track for an 8. Maybe a 7 for people who aren't MK fans.

7 sounds about right to me. It's not bad, but if it wasn't MK I wouldn't care about it. Then again you could say that about all the MK games in the post Tobias era.

3, II, 1, 4, DA, Deception is how I rank them, from best to worst. I basically have no hope that they'll ever come close to topping 3, or even II and 1.

Anyanka you're really taking the storyline discrepancies... a bit too.... hard...

I have to agree with you. MKIII was awesome, MKII was brilliant, MK is a cool classic, anything afterwards just doesn't do it.

I need to clarify with you all. MKII unlockable: is this the EXACT ARCADE version of MKII or something else. Someone mentioned MAT but what on earth does that mean? Make it clear and simple because in my opinion, for them to not put the Arcade MKII in its ENTIRE glory would be classed as a complete disgrace on their part. Especially when there are emulated ROM versions flying all over the place.

Eh I love the new Mortal Kombat games. Then again I thought MK3 was a fucking mess anyway. Lame characters, lame fatalities, lame story.

MK1 and 2 will always be my fave though. :)

MK3 has my favorite story by far. Post apocalpytic Chicago was the best setting. In the other games you're trying to stop the bad guys from eventually taking over Earth. In MK3 it's already happened. In no other games are the heroes backs against the wall like MK3. The only thing I don't like about it as all the ninjas in UMK3 and MKT. Weak Outworld losers like Ermac and Rain took the focus off the Earth warriors.

MAT 2 = Midway Arcade Treasures 2. It's the version of MK II from that. Lifted straight from it. It even still has the load screens and pause menu from MAT2. It's not exact though. There's a handful of problems that will bug hardcore fans. Since start pauses you can't do random select or fight Smoke. There's also some sound and graphic glitches, like messed up shadows and the sound goes out during the ending.

Is there any way to beat the trio of fights at the end of the game other than using fireballs from across the ring as you run around in circles for 10 minutes? Fuck! Midway fails at making bosses AGAIN. Every fucking MK game, I swear.

Going to go make attempt number 18 or so in a minute....

Kung Lao - 248 hit combo bitches. I'm back in London so if Jetjevons could photo the stat screen and post it here, that would be lovely.
Also, try find Ermac. Or just read the shit I posted in the earlier Shaolin Monks thread. Even with Ermac found and the game beat, I only had 84% of the game completed. Maybe you need the co-op only medals to boost that.

Oh, and fighting Kano is quite fun too and allows you to free Sonya. Gives you an energy boost for fighting the bosses too.

As for Kahn's cheap spin, just keep kciking him in the head with the air-kick combo.

You can beat Kintaro without ever getting hit just by doing Kung Lao's dive kick over and over, landing when he punches and then repeating. The AI is horrible.

You can get 100% completion without playing co-op. The counter goes over 100. I'm at 110% now and have 2 secrets left. There's only about 8 co-op secrets.

Check yo' bad self. You are a true warrior . I take my (razor) hat off to you sir.

I'm wandering around in co-op controlling both guys by myself trying to find any other co-op secrets. It's so frustrating having only two left. The world is so big and I have no idea where to search.

I've also got a third single player going with Liu Kang on hard. So far it doesn't seem much harder...

im sorry but....... :lol :lol

I actually managed to get like halfway through doing that. It wasn't until the giant snake platforming part that I had to recruit a friend.
