Mmmmmm, Fine Bedding...Feels Good Man

So with my random escapades to hotels for work and what not I was always disappointed with my own bedding at home as it has been the cause for injuries and terrible nights sleeps, and being a male (enter stereotype now) it's not something we'd really put to the top of our list. I just never have never been that comfortable on my bed after experiencing nice hotels

So I was laying on my half broken ikea bed and got fed up when another wooden slate broke and decided to put a bit of cash down on some fine bedding after doing some research:

-13.5 Tog 100% Goose Duvet Down
-310 thread count Egyptian Cotton Duvet Cover, Pillowcase and Flat Bedsheet (wanted a bedspread, but a little too much right now)
-4 100% Goose pillows

I didn't get those from Ikea, but from a specialist Egyptian cotton dealer. I decided to get a cheaper Ikea mattress which weirdly was a lot nicer than some of the softer foam and more expensive Ikea mattresses and teamed this up with some new wooden slates. Mind you I am 16 stones/225 lbs (mostly muscle, not fat), I don't know how long they will last, but with a thicker mattress hopefully I won't have any issues

Hopefully this will lead to a much better sleep and less damn injuries. And of course the issue of sex has always been a problem on my bed since the mattress isn't that thick and the wooden slates are kinda uncomfortable for whoever is on their back, so hopefully that should change things

How's your bedding, or are you just sleeping on an old towel in a garage with a wall adorned by Satoru Iwata?

I'm a sucker for high thread count, and I blame it on my wife. I had some crappy old 80 thread count sheets when we moved in together. Now we use only 300 and above.
If I stay anywhere with shitty sheets it drives me crazy.
Right now our bed is a standard mattress with a memory foam top. The top is about 8" thick and makes my bed tall as fuck, but it feels amazing. I though memory foam was a joke but I was wrong.
I've got crappy pillows, and I know it, but I don't have any expertise on what makes a pillow a "good" one. I had a down pillow when I was a kid and I liked it pretty well.
Any recommendations on a badass pillow?

Bamboo sheets are a good way to save some money and get comfort. They wash well too. I'd love to invest in some nice sheets, but with a cat and the fact that I'm only home 1/4 of the year, bamboo sheets it is!

That said, I need to invest in something for my bed at school. Mattress pad ain't cuttin it!

Yes this! I love our bamboo sheets. So soft... Not as soft as the 600 thread count I'm laying in now though. :P

I'm allergic to feathers/down though, so no crazy pillows or bed toppers. :( The pillows we have aren't bad but fuck... We've tried buying crazy alternative pillows but they've all kinda sucked.

Tempurpedic all the way. I have the cloud model and it kicks ass. I like the pillows too. It's hard to use regular pillows now.

For sheets I like high thread counts, but not all of those are equal. Some 800 count sheets still feel rough.

Yeah I've seen that from time to time, and a thread count can actually be too high. I need to look it up but I remember seeing something about how 1000 thread count was physically impossible even though some manufactures advertise with it.

I wish I had a Tempurpedic bed! I have a memory foam cover, and it's not BAD, but it's just NOT THE SAME. I just got a Tempurpedic neck pillow three days ago and it's possibly the best $100 dollars I've spent in a while. Seriously. I wake up feeling so much better when I use it. SO much better.

From what I was told from people 100% goose down is the way to go, anything with those internals will be fluffly and soft. But you will need to fluff them up a lot

Down or feather?

We just bought a new duvet, think it's goose down. Only 10.5 tog though, I find anything more is too warm for me. I do love it, but we definitely need better cotton to go with it, and probably a new mattress.

I hate hotel pillows though. Nearly always too hard, or too like a giant marshmallow. When I started travel g on business, I used to pack my pillow from home, otherwise I just couldn't sleep properly.

We've got some really nice stuff since my wife worked in pricing at a department store while in school. As soon as really nice sheets/comforters would drop to mega-low prices to clear out the last couple items in stock we'd scoop 'em up and get a further employee discount plus some kind of coupon for the store we'd been holding on to. I also once dated a girl from a fairly wealthy family. Her father owns several large furniture outlets in california and elsewhere. She had the most comfortable bed I've had the chance to sleep on

My bed right now is like sleeping in my own filth on a piece of wood

I'll be moving out in a bigger apartment soon and will get the stuff you mentioned in the OP or better. Can't wait. Fuck back problems

I've heard it said that hard beds are good for your back...liars can suck my balls. I wake up tired, groggy, and sluggish. Didn't help when I was in Korea and everything there was hard or they slept on the ground.

Wish I had a nice bed now, but it's not generally something people put a lot of thought into.

Hard and firm are two different things.

I'm rocking a lot of high-fiber count Egyptian cotton bedding now. When I get a king size bed when I get a new place, I'm going all Mulberry silk.

I found my mattress preference changed several years ago. My very firm mattress, which I loved before, became a thing of torture. Now I have a softer mattress with a pillow top.

I also changed my pillow preference. Before I used just one really thin pillow and sometimes none at all. Now I use a combination of my thin pillows and big, soft latex pillows.

When buying new pillows I actually tested them on one of the beds they had on display at the store. I'd lie on the bed and test each pillow one by one. I took a pillow case in to drape over the top of the pillows so as not to get my filthy head grease over the plastic bags.

It sounds extreme but I'm spending 5-7 hours a night with these things - it pays to get it right.

As for sheets - living in Sydney I'm usually looking for the lightest sheets available.

Hmm maybe I should get in on this high thread count stuff. Right now I just threw an egg crate pad over mine. Feels fine...no complaints here.

OT: Does anyone else like sleeping low to the ground? A few years ago my bedroom was being repainted so they took they frame off my bed and just put the mattress and box spring on the floor. It was heavenly.

I should do that. I've never been able to find a pillow I like.

I'm a big fan of down by my girlfriend seems to be allergic to it. I'm fine getting a non-down comforter but I can't seem to find regular pillows that I like. Can anyone recommend some thick and soft non-down pillows.

The other issue I have with bedding is finding something stylish and manly. Right now I have gun metal blue sheets with a dark brown damask strip comforter. It's pretty modern and manly but a little boring. I didn't find a grey pinstripe suit like flannel comforter cover but it was over $250 and warm flannel isn't the best thing for So Cal. Has anyone found anything like this?

You can try latex pillows. They come in different densities. Some people don't like them but I love mine.

(edit) There's also wool for the lover of the natural fill.

This thread makes me feel like a hobo in my hand-me-down boxspring and mattress without any frame, on the floor

I slept on a futon mattress on the floor for over a year - awesome night's sleep.

There's aficionados of all forms on GAF. Take a stroll into Photography GAF threads and see the $2000 equipment thats toted. But yeah $400 sheets made my eyes bug out.

jesus christ. Do you sell them or something? Who cares? Get a matress for cheap and put a ÂŁ30 (probably cheaper in the US) memory foam topper on and hey presto, done.

Come on man. You sleep on it everyday. Certain things are worth spending that cash on.

Thread count is an overrated measurement, it can be counted it so many different ways it is essentially meaningless. Plus some of the really high count stuff is just so tightly woven they are all stiff and don't breath right.

I rock 6 oz flannel sheets in the winter and some 350 count sheets the rest of the year.

Yeah, you should totally skimp on something that you will spend a third of your life on and directly affects your health. You should also never spend more than $20 on an office chair. Who cares if the cheap seat creates pressure points on your body and affects your posture over time? That stuff isn't important; it's not worth wasting more than an hour's wages on.

i'm going to have to say i agree. my bedding right now is absolutely shit but i bought it be tossed out shortly. right now it has been a year since I got it. I plan to go hog wild with an amazing new setup once my check comes from my stock sale.

we spend most of our lives in bed, it should be goddamn comfortable and allow us to get the proper healing our bodies do while at rest.

I cannot win in a thread full of maniacs who think spending $400 on sheets is ok. You're mental. My matress combination cost ÂŁ90 (mattress and topper), and my sheets cost ÂŁ20 and I have a perfect nights sleep and no health problems.

Contrary to many Gaffer's beliefs, throwing vast amounts of money at things isn't the only way.

Are you joking? Your bed is probably the single place where you will spend the most time through your entire life, unless you have an office job where you're in a chair all day. Then it's the second place.

I'm not sure why you care anyway, people make money in order to spend it. Money sitting in a bank somewhere isn't doing anyone any good. If you're not saving up money for a house or car or something, I would sure as shit spend it on good bed stuff. I mean yeah, you can buy crappy stuff all through your life and have a ton of money in the bank or other assets if that's what you want, but it doesn't seem like the best idea.

Spend what is suitable for what you make. Obviously if you're working at McDonald's you probably shouldn't be buying $2000 camera parts or $1500 bedding but it's not "crazy" or "stupid" to spend money on nice comfortable stuff if you can afford it and it's worth it to you.

There is a difference though when your blowing $200 on just sheets and $2k on a mattress when $80 and $700 ones are really no different. Sure you would be better off paying more for individual sheets, comforter, and pillows than buying a $40 bed in a bag but a lot of people take everything to far.

I work in the cycling industry and live off people buying over priced top of the line stuff. I never recommend top of the line parts to friends as they are never worth the money no matter how much they are used.

You must not have any back problems (yet). As you get older, it will matter.

Who the hell in this thread said they spend $400 on sheets?

Even 600 count sheets can be bought for well under $100 (more like $50 these days), and the op was talking about 310 thread ct. The goose down duvet and pillows were probably expensive, but that's not the same as spending $400 on sheets.

I agree. Mid-range stuff is your best bet.

I used to be proud of spending 100-200 dollars on a cheap mattress, but I started to have more and more back issues. Last mattress we bought, we spent about $1000 On a Simmons Beautyrest. Doing much better now.

I should look into the Temperpedic pillows.

I'm personally of the preference I will either get the best or the worst.

Take note that he's advocating products that are 4 times as expensive as what you said are no different so he's disagreeing with you. I'm pretty sure that no one here said they bought $400 sheets, what would those even be made of?

I sleep on a futon bed. The core is made of wood and there's a tear in the center that has cut me badly on ocassion when sleeping. My blanket cost me $30 and I have no pillows. I am fucked. But I want to buy a bed set in the near future, trying to save up 2k and buy a Stearns and Foster set I saw at a local store. Seriously, I have never had a good bed. The difference when I tried that one was mind blowing, oh so soft.
