Mobile Phone Radiation Harms DNA, New Study Finds
Mon Dec 20, 2004 04:38 PM ET

MUNICH/AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Radio waves from mobile phones harm body cells and damage DNA in laboratory conditions, according to a new study majority-funded by the European Union, researchers said on Monday.

The so-called Reflex study, conducted by 12 research groups in seven European countries, did not prove that mobile phones are a risk to health but concluded that more research is needed to see if effects can also be found outside a lab.

The $100 billion a year mobile phone industry asserts that there is no conclusive evidence of harmful effects as a result of electromagnetic radiation.

About 650 million mobile phones are expected to be sold to consumers this year, and over 1.5 billion people around the world use one.

The research project, which took four years and which was coordinated by the German research group Verum, studied the effect of radiation on human and animal cells in a laboratory.

After being exposed to electromagnetic fields that are typical for mobile phones, the cells showed a significant increase in single and double-strand DNA breaks. The damage could not always be repaired by the cell. DNA carries the genetic material of an organism and its different cells.

"There was remaining damage for future generation of cells," said project leader Franz Adlkofer.

This means the change had procreated. Mutated cells are seen as a possible cause of cancer.

The radiation used in the study was at levels between a Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) of between 0.3 and 2 watts per kilogram. Most phones emit radio signals at SAR levels of between 0.5 and 1 W/kg.

SAR is a measure of the rate of radio energy absorption in body tissue, and the SAR limit recommended by the International Commission of Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection is 2 W/kg.

The study also measured other harmful effects on cells.

Because of the lab set-up, the researchers said the study did not prove any health risks. But they added that "the genotoxic and phenotypic effects clearly require further studies ... on animals and human volunteers."

Adlkofer advised against the use of a mobile phone when an alternative fixed line phone was available, and recommended the use of a headset connected to a cellphone whenever possible.

"We don't want to create a panic, but it is good to take precautions," he said, adding that additional research could take another four or five years.

Previous independent studies into the health effects of mobile phone radiation have found it may have some effect on the human body, such as heating up body tissue and causing headaches and nausea, but no study that could be independently repeated has proved that radiation had permanent harmful effects.

None of the world's top six mobile phone vendors could immediately respond to the results of the study.

In a separate announcement in Hong Kong, where consumers tend to spend more time talking on a mobile phone than in Europe, a German company called G-Hanz introduced a new type of mobile phone which it claimed had no harmful radiation, as a result of shorter bursts of the radio signal.

Obviously more work has to be done, but I do have a kind of warm, fuzzy feeling* knowing that, all told, I only use my cell phone for about two hours a month.

(*Or maybe that's the radiation.)

Just makes sense. Really makes you regret holding that phone to the side of your head for so long, though. At this point, the damage is done and it is probably too late to bother changing habits.

I'm glad I've never had a cellphone.

I held off on buying one for a long, long time, almost completely due to a fear of something like this. Wish I'd never broken down and bought in to the convenience.

This is going to become one of those things that has clearly hurt people, but for which there will be no quick compensatory measure. See: Gulf War syndrome, rare MMR vaxine side-effects, passive smoking, etc. Far from harming DNA, previous research has found that they can have other effects: Dr Stefan Braune found they can raise blood pressure 5-10mm Hg in an expirement where people had phones strapped to their heads, and turned on or off without their knowledge. When they were on, it found it commonly rose more than enough to trigger a stroke or heart attack in someone at severe risk. This is probably part of the reason why wireless devices now come with warnings for those with pacemakers. Sometimes you read about how emissions from these devices are comparable with things like Computer Monitors, TVs etc -- but they don't permiate or pulse radio frequency level radiation into the air in quite the way mobile phones do. And that's one area of concern for some people - http://www.mercola.com/2000/dec/17/mobile_phones.htm.. even then we can't rule out the notion that things we've used for decades are helping to harm or kill us.

Furthermore, the DTX pulse frequency at 2 Hz and the TDMA frequency of 834 Hz correspond to frequencies of electrical oscillations found in the human brain, specifically the delta and alpha brain-waves, respectively. It is thus quite possible that living organisms have a two-fold sensitivity to the pulsed GSM signal -- ie, to both the microwave carrier and the lower frequency pulsings of the TDMA and DTX signals.

To deny this possibility yet admit the importance of ensuring electromagnetic compatibility with electronic instruments by banning the use of mobile phones on aircraft (11) and hospitals (a prohibition driven by concerns about non-thermal interference) seems inconsistent.

The stuff about the effects on the body's normal electrochemical activities wouldn't be totally new. Electromagnetic radiation is a pretty broad term by the way. Mi6 have apparently used pulsing lights to disable/assasinate targets. Those with photosensitive epilepsy are vulnerable to even weaker forms of such common radiation. I gotta wonder what harm other devices are doing. Electromagnetic pollution could end up having been serious after all in our lifetime, and for many it will be too late.

Ah well. Just as people are with smoking, even though I know there may be risks, I'm gonna have to keep using my phone anyway. Not out of necessity, but out of addiction and convenience.

Insufficient information. How long does it take to cause harm, does the location in relation to the body cause harm, what levels are causing the damage, is that related to high power transmissions or just the 'average phone', and is there anything that can be done to prevent it.

I remember using someones mobile phone about 7 years ago and it made my head feel funny while using it.....not painful, just like something was interfering with my brainwaves or something.

I haven't had that feeling with my phones though which are much newer.

Sweet by the time I get real old this will be confirmed and when I get my tumor I can join the class action suit that will be out at that time.

I've been saying for years that these things were the new cigarettes of the nineties. I had a phone for a while but got rid of it after the feeling I would get after using it and doing some research on the electromagnetic radiation output of the phones.

I don't know if the cell phone companies know about the adverse effects, but I hope they are saving up for some tobacco company sized lawsuits in the future.

Good thing I've only used a cell phone once in my life :). Of course.. the fact that I'm on the computer all the time has probably countered that :lol.

If we could see the amount of radio waves running through our environment we probably couldn't see anything else. Owning a mobile phone or not, it's effecting you in some way shape or form. Its not like the wave only runs right to your phone in a clean line, it runs through everything.

It's not like these studies have just said "radio waves from mobiles are harming us" though... there's evidence that the thermal effects of mobile emissions next to your ear are bad, that the microwave carrier signal & constant low-frequency radio pulsating from them can cause chemical changes in the body. Children seem more susceptible too, before their brain adapts to Delta waves or something from what I've read. Of course, there's a lot more work to be done, and there can be no conclusions that will satisfy a lot of people... but there's potential danger here. If these things are splitting cells, they could cause tumors.. it's fucked up. I'm considering not using mine anymore. I've had it turned off while I've been at home.

Wonder if people will start thinking twice about putting the cell phone in their pocket so close to the jewels...

That's why I named my phone "Cancer stick" but even then I'll still talk on it for a while without a headset... I try to use a headset as often as I can though since I usually get headaches if I'm talking into the phone for any extended period of time.

You probably get more DNA damage from eating a hamburger.

Plus when everyone is wifi'd and wimaxed up, plus radio plus power lines - there'll be electromagnetic radiation all over the place.

Can't live with it, can't live without it.

My old flatmate's electric razer had "low charge" warning light. He told me that when his cellphone rang, it would power the low power light on his razor, even if it had absolutely no power left.

Well, that's that, then.

(tosses cell phone into the garbage)

I find it ironic that some people use phrases like this, instead of the banned phrase: "OMG! SELL YOUR MOBILE PHONES! IT'S ALL OVER!"

And I find it even more ironic that I actually quoted a mod doing it here.
