Satya Nadella: Annual letter to stockholders. Content on new platforms will continue

The choice between Xbox and PS is mostly driven by exclusives, and PS has the upper hand in that regard. Hence the much better sales.
I would agree if we talk about people like us who can instantly list 10+ exclusives for each platoform. But we are not representative, i bet most casuals would struggle after Mario and Zelda and some woulnb't even know exclusive means. So i can't agree on that "mostly" part.

Where is this narrative that no one believes Satya Nadella coming from?

You're so wrong that not only will Xbox clearly be going this route, but Sony will 100% follow suite as well. I don't even put Nintendo off the table on this.

It'll be a little green icon that you can load up on your phone. It'll have cloud versions of everything you've ever purchased, plus all GP content and mobile content. It'll have their own store integrated into it. Or you can load the same thing on any capable PC or any of the various handhelds and download local copies to play offline. Or play it on TVs, browsers, anything.

The only branding they need is "green." It's a little green icon. Netflix is a little red icon. Doesn't matter that it isn't DVDs anymore. Netflix is now games, movies, TV shows. The point is its going to be everywhere. Sony is literally already porting most of their stuff to PC.

Your comment about "people not understanding the industry" is going to be funny when you're 100% wrong on everything you're claiming. I genuinely think a lot of people that only game on PS are about a decade behind in terms of realizing what is happening. You guys still think they're going to making discs for you forever.

So what's the timeline for what you are posing? Is it 2025? 2030? 2040?

Surely if people don't care about exclusives they'd go for the series s because it's cheaper right?

Those people also fail to mention how Switch is selling more than Xbox...a console that came out in 2017.

Everyone is doing better than Xbox but somehow the console industry is dying suddenly.
Very much my sentiment earlier, hence my Keep The Faith post. Xbox is doing what they’re doing out of desperation and they are in that situation alone.

That said, I do at least agree with Cakeboxer Cakeboxer on one thing - exclusives are a necessity much more for Nintendo than anyone else.

They could release the game pass streaming app on Roku and that would make his statement true. It's corporate double speak that could mean anything from a streaming app all the way through to them being essentially a third party.

Timeline is fluid because everything moves slowly. PS5 is likely going mostly as is until 2026. Let's guess 2027 at the earliest for PS6, but if people are spooked about adoption or price, maybe even 2028 if the economy worsens. Then that means PS6 with an optional disc drive is going to be around 2027 - 2034. 2035, the "console" will still exist as a local computing device but it will look a lot different.

Sony is already porting everything to PC. If China's gaming market keeps growing over the next decade, it'll keep making up a larger portion of total sales, and it's on PC. Sony already does cloud gaming. Sony already has an app. Sony has already launched a game that replicates the PSN overlay on PC with trophies. They've pretty much almost gotten there already in 2024. That's where they will get investment, by laying out to investors how they plan to grow into new areas and get new customers.

Nintendo already has their back catalog locked to a digital only subscription. If they ever have a generation that slows down below what the Switch 1 is doing, they could very easily pivot as well.

It's incredibly easy to predict that MS is going this route because they've basically already said it publicly, with interviews talking about their aims for a Windows-Lite OS, multi-store, forward compatibility. It barely even counts as a prediction. I'm increasing the difficulty of my prediction by adding Sony. What do you think is going to happen? No PC ports? No cloud or app? Discs on PS only for the next 15 years?

Not again. It's more complex than just one reason. I mean let's get back to PS4/Xbox One release. Both had really bad launch exclusives. Why did so many people chose PS instead of Xbox?

Because of the promise of more exclusives? Sony built a strong first party that was firing on all cylinders. MS was just spamming halo and forza and kinect. It also didn’t hurt that it was the stronger console at a cheaper price.

1. See my problem with the bolded is that both Nintendo and Sony can not grow, if they move away from the console model. It'll only shrink their overall reach.

2. To you final questions.......Sony will continue with PC ports. The only question is the timing. Will it be 1-2 years? Or will it shorten to 6 months? Or some day and date? Disc will more than likely exist on the PS6. But the PS7 will 100% be digital-only in my opinion. But that's in the year 2035 at the earliest.

3. Nintendo would go bankrupt (not financially, but creatively) if they followed Microsoft's current strategy.

My hope is that it give birth to a dedicated OS focused on the living room. Like SteamOS. And 100% compatible with regular Windows so no new versions needed from devs. Can have regular Windows as a separate boot for file access stuff like how you boot into Linux on Steam Deck. Touch pad on controller.

That's a good idea, but I'm not sure MS wants to invest in that to be honest.

Yep - a Roku streaming app would be them continuing to extend their content to new platforms.

You gotta be kidding me! Are you NOT paying attention? You think Roku is where they are looking to make more of their cash? LOLOL!!!!

Because Xbox went after the Kinect crowd and tv tv TV with HDMI pass thru for US cable markets, NFL etc....they failed to deliver a console dedicated to max gaming performance. Also an extra $100 to boot.

No one is saying we need to believe everything they say. I'm saying that when people paint Microsoft as universal liers, when they then select to believe one sentence that just so happens to feed into their narrative, it doesn't come across as logical or even cynical. It comes across as laughable.
To quote a certain guy: "When Mexico Microsoft sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs Phil. They’re bringing crime Greenberg. They’re rapists liars. And some, I assume, are good people."

Maybe Satya is good people 🫢

Exactly. Exclusives may be part of the reasons to choose a platform, but usually not the main or only reason.

Nah, I dont think you understand how popular games like God of War are with the mainstream and even casual audience. Ditto for stuff like Spiderman.

Sony has a knack of picking winners when it comes to making and marketing these 3rd person story driven games. So even stuff that gets middling critical reception like Days Gone gets a lot of commercial success. People like the concept of a dude riding a motorbike and killing zombies.

People know what exclusives mean. They know God of War and Spiderman aren’t on Xbox, for example, and Mario isn’t on PlayStation.

Just go watch Xbox's conference and Sony's conference from back then and it's easily visible how badly Microsoft shot themselves in the foot.

The problems started before then, but that's when the public saw that they were no longer the innovative force behind the 360.

There's no such Kinect related gimping of the series x console this generation though. On paper the series x has more GPU tflops for what that was worth. But they continued to release their games day and date with PC, so continuing to lack any real need to own a series console this generation.

Pun intended? :messenger_grinning_smiling:
I've seen the poor pc sales and please don't tell me all Pc gamers have already played them on console.

Do you have any casual gamers in your friends circle? I'm the only "real gamer" (man that sounds awful) in mine. They all got a PS5s and Switchs, but other than Mario and Zelda i don't know any of them having bought any exclusive. GTA,, RDR2, Fifa or COD sure thing. The son of my best friend only plays Fortnite and Goat Simulator 3 (lol). But of course me and my friends are not representative for the world, but that's why i think the way i think.

I already posted that awful pr stuff above, i just wanted to demonstrate why it's not all about exclusives.

Sony is already at "some day and date" right now in 2024. You do concede that Sony is likely to continue with PC ports. They are likely to continue with cloud integration. And they are likely to transition to all-digital. That basically means the PS brand is going to be the "blue" app, and the app will be on everything. You can play on PC, some kind of local computation box possibly sold by Sony still, or cloud. Do you disagree with any of that? Sounds like that will be locked in over the next decade and we both agree more or less.

Nintendo I am not officially predicting this, but it wouldn't shock me in any way if they did the same. There is some appeal in having a child friendly cheap device that isn't integrated with everything else, so maybe they'll stick with it.

Your positioning of all of this that's bolded is where we disagree. Just because Sony will port a 1st party game to PC in 1.5 years doesn't mean "You can play on PC". The timing does matter. Just because they will have some way to play your games on the cloud, doesn't mean Playstation brand will just be the "blue app".

Sony is a hardware company first and foremost. It doesn't make sense for them to go away from hardware, unless they lost a way to profit from it.

Well it's just a prediction, so who knows. Pretty damn difficult to guess what things look like a decade from now. But I see 3rd party exclusives on console mostly going away in the extremely near future. I see games like Helldivers or Black Myth Wukong that are day 1 on PC blowing up a lot more than Stella Blade. I think without 3rd party timed exclusives like Final Fantasy, or all the rest, Sony's 1st party output isn't really fast enough to carry a whole box exclusively. We're talking 1-3 games a year, with anything multiplayer, GAAS being day 1 on PC already. But yeah, maybe they will delay their prestige titles a bit. That wouldn't surprise me at all.

What I mean by the "blue app" thing is not some put down. I mean that's where Xbox is basically already at, so I think Xbox gamers have a better sense of what the future is going to look like. Anyone that picked up a Series S in 2021 is about 16 years forward in this timeline we're looking at in 2035. I literally can play a game at home on my basement on the Series X, then go upstairs and play it on my Series S and it all links, leave and load up the game on the cloud on my phone on the green app, and then head to my brother's and load it up on a browser or his TV with nothing else there. And soon, that will likely all be integrated with PC and windows if the rumors are true. You just start it up and put in your log-in info and it's there. Or it'll be an app on a TV that has everything you've ever bought. Steam is just an app as well, it's just not quite as portable yet but it's getting there.

We'll talk again in a few years. I'm 100% sure singleplayer games will come day1, just a matter of time.

Anything is possible but I don't think it happens until after Xbox is done done. As in all the games are coming and it's not even a conversation to really have anymore. Even then I'm not so sure it happens because from what I read/heard PS releases Pro consoles in order to stop high spenders from moving over to PC instead of staying with PS. If that's the case they might see going day and date as further incentivizing people to do that.

On top of that I don't really think they will get much more sales by going day and date compared to if they just postponed it. Also going day and date would require them to hire more people for all their studios in order to make both versions work day and date. Right now they are sending the porting jobs to other companies and it seems to be kind of hit and miss right now. So you are looking at longer development times and more employees and is Sony going to want to do that?

People on GAF still don't realize how impossible this is to work for MS. There's less than a 1% chance a Xbox-PC hybrid can work. Only people that don't understand the industry thinks this is a workable idea.

It's so funny because they had this IT guy come on Podcast Unlocked. Ryan and Destin started talking about this PC/Xbox hybrid and the guy just started laughing and saying basically "Guys I work with windows all the time I just don't see how MS is going to make this work". It's exactly what I've always thought as well.

Oh gotcha! Just the play anywhere approach. But not eliminating the console. I could see Sony doing a version of this, but in their own way. Similar to how Playstation has PS+ Premium, but it's not exactly like GamePass. But it's a subscription service that works for them.

Yeah I can see Playstation doing this too, but in their own unique way. I actually think that's one of the reason Sony made the PS Portal. The PS Portal 2 maybe their "gaming on the cloud" solution without relying only on smart phones and tablets.

Xbox switching to a cloud device or hybrid PC for their hardware is risky, but it's better than the 0% chance of success a traditional Xbox console will have. They only have hard choices in front of them.

That's what i think too that's why i said i expect it mid to end PS6. At this time PS should have outsold Xbox by >5:1 and Xbox should have announced the end of hardware.

I think they would get significantly more sales on pc for two reasons. First: Their huge console AAA marketing campaigns that already sell millions of copies on their own would also benefit pc. Second: Pc players have so much to play, many are not interested in full priced "old" games on release. Call me crazy, but i think a day one Spider-Man 1 on pc could have done 10 million sales.

If MS goes 100% 3rd party and stops making consoles.......Sony will pretty much (I'm 99% sure) have most if not all their 1st party games on PC day one. Nintendo is not similar enough to them and PC isn't as big of a competitor for them to NOT do that. You're right that they'll need to hire way more people to do this, but if Xbox is gone then it makes sense to just do that.

They'll use all the 30% that they'll generate selling Xbox games on PS consoles to have PC divisions within every 1st party developer. Basically Nixxes will triple in size and they'll be a "Nixxes" department within every 1st party team. Will this delay games from coming out? YES! But within Xbox being around, Sony wouldn't care. Delay every 1st party game 6-12 months for all they care. Why would it matter if there's no Xbox?

I think they'll get their own PC store up and you can buy it day 1 there. Or 2 years later on Steam, and depending on how it does, they would obviously want to phase out Steam completely and keep all their money without paying 30% for nothing. Being on any device is fine. Being on someone else's app though is very expensive. And personally, I don't think that's unreasonable at all to get the game on the device you want but use their storefront. Sony would get all the money, and they deserve it. They're capable of running a functional store, friend list, wishlist, etc. That's where I think the next big battle is. I just can't see everyone laying down and giving all that money to Valve for nothing just because people won't load a different store up. And the benefit of buying on Sony's store will be the portability, cross save, trophies, etc.

I don't think MS exiting consoles would cause Sony to switch to day 1 PC releases. Sony would rather that you buy within psn on PS5. They've seen what continued day 1 on PC has done to the identity crisis of the series Gen.

It's just bizarre if there are restrictions around COD. For instance, with COD, Xbox's youtube channel advertises Gamepass for PC and Xbox but Activision's channel doesn't. TV ads don't mention Xbox or Gamepass either. If there are restrictions, it seems to be quite elaborate about what is allowed and what isn't

But yeah, maybe there has to be something in place. COD bundles print money. Playstation seemingly had them every year when they had marketing
Activision must not even give a shit about YouTube. They have 3 videos there in the past year. Most current one was from 4 months ago. Looking at their history, their video postings died off after the acquisition announcement. Since they are part of Xbox Game Studios, I assume they must be relying on their Xbox youtube then. However the Activision main webpage and the COD main webpage both advertise Game Pass for Blackops 6.

If they treat it like the Epic Game Store, it wouldn't hurt them as much. Yeah they lose some gamers to PC from Playstation, but they'll gain other PS gamers from the missing Xbox platform.

I talked about it yesterday, but Microsoft is far closer to doing this than Sony is (and have far greater imperatives to do it).

Not only do they have big IP leverage (something like ES6 exclusivity or a big Minecraft update can do wonders for this storefront), they also control Windows and can integrate it with their storefront (really, storefronts, they also own Bethesda and Battle.net) in a way that Valve simply couldn't match.

I think it really depends on what they want out of this. I think %5-10 of the PC market can be taken over a period of say, 10 years? That's a slice that Sony never had access to before and would represent pure growth.

Regardless of what we think or not of their chances, the PSN integration stuff is almost certainly a precursor to a PSN PC storefront.

They aren't taking 5-10% of the PC market unless they can manage to provide the breadth of games that Steam offer, offer better launcher features along with a better ecosystem than Steam offers and better pricing (and purchase options) than Steam.

It's just not happening, at least not without significant outlay and effort. If they wish to actually sell a reasonable amount of copies of their games on PC then they would be wise to continue to leverage the existing PC storefronts as they are already.

All this talk about them creating their own launcher and it somehow being successful is delusion from people who don't use and/or understand the PC ecosystem. If it were so easy then why isn't Microsoft, who own and operate the dominant PC gaming OS, dominating in terms of their storefront? The reason they aren't is because it takes effort and investment that they simply aren't willing to put in.

The 30% isn't being given away, it's not "free" for valve. It's justified due to the fact that they do all of the heavy lifting that enables your ("your" being any 3rd party publisher/developer on Steam) customers to have a smooth and enjoyable end-to-end experience from the point of purchase through to engaging with the product.

Yeah, and that's fine with me. Quick resume and windows lite is good. And there should be multiple storefronts. If Nintendo ever goes this route in the distant future, it will 100% be only on their own store. I can't imagine the arrogance of anyone thinking Nintendo should put stuff on PC and give 1/3rd of it to Valve for no reason. I think PC gamers really have a giant blindspot with their demand for everything to be on Steam. If Valve took 5% or something, fine, but they often are taking 1/3rd which is pretty insane. At least buying games on a MS, Sony or Nintendo storefront is putting money back in the pocket of a company that reinvests in great games. Valve is harvesting 30% out and giving you hats and 1 GAAS game every decade. That's a gigantic sum of money basically lit on fire as far as the gaming consumer is concerned.

What I hope MS will do is build in to their new Windows-lite overlay some ability to have a unified library showing everything you own on Steam, Epic, MS Store, etc in one place. I think that's the only way they'll be able to eventually get some people to move away from only buying on Steam. No one should want 1 store to control everything like that. If you buy physical games at Walmart and Target, you can still display it in your 1 library at home. There should be a store agnostic digital library as well. Ideally it would even show multiple stores while shopping so you can compare pricing, but that will likely never happen. It's a real problem if more of the industry transitions to PC, and all we get out of it as consumers is watching Gabe get 5 more yachts and no notable 1st party output.
