I imagine commercial shipping makes a nice target for pirates, particularly in narrow shipping lanes and in areas such as SE Asia. Cargo ships are undefended and as such would seem relatively easy for pirates to commandeer, take back to port and sell the cargo on the black market. Not to mention that as global trade continues to increase in the future, could the frequency of attacks rise as they have been over the past decade?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piracy

Pirate attacks tripled between 1993 and 2003. The first half of 2003 was the worst 6-month period on record, with 234 pirate attacks, 16 deaths, and 52 people injured worldwide. There were also 193 crew members held hostage during this period.

182 cases of piracy were reported worldwide in the first 6 months of 2004. Of these incidents, 50 occurred in Indonesian waters.

The Piracy Reporting Centre of the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) stated in 2004 that most pirate attacks in that year occurred in Indonesian waters (70 of 251 reported attacks). Of these attacks, a majority occurred in the Straits of Malacca. They also stated that of the attacks in 2004, oil and gas tankers and bulk carriers were the most popular targets with 67 attacks on tankers and 52 on bulk carriers.

I've been playing pirates on PC incidentally :)

Comandeering any large vessel is no small feet. Most ships that are pirated tend to be of the smaller 'yacht'/tug/barge variety.

Shit, where do I sign up? I have an eye patch.

To be honest I'd sort of love to be a part of this shit though. The 'evil' side of me would like nothing more than to steal some greedy multinationals cargo ship, hold the crew for random, flog the goods off on the black market and profit from the bounty.

Thing is that cargo ships carry a rather small crew and carry few small arms for defence (if any), once aboard a small, well trained and decently armed force could probably commandeer it with ease. Most pirate groups are probably poorly equipped amateurs though.

Fictional Pirates

The notorious Dread Pirate Roberts in The Princess Bride, by William Goldman, was in fact a long series of different pirates operating under the same name, each inheriting the title from the last and capitalizing on its reputation.

Monkey D. Luffy, the protagonist in a world of pirates in One Piece, an anime and manga.

Guybrush Threepwood, hero and main character of the Monkey Island adventure games by LucasArts. He is also the antagonist of the evil zombie pirate LeChuck.
