Modern Vintage Gamer: Four Days Later...Is the PS5 Pro REALLY worth $700?

I bought a Sony PlayStation PS5 Pro for $700 including an $80 disc drive add-on - so you don't have to. It does exactly what its advertised to do. Enhance Visuals and Performance for PS5 games. The question is - is the PS5 Pro really worth the money? In today's episode I give you my thoughts on the brand new PS5 Pro console. Impressive? Yes, worth it? Check out today's video to learn more!

Seems the tl;dr that most are saying is that it's worth it if you game a lot. But if you're more casual and you're happy with the base PS5, it's a skip.

Sounds fine to me - the PS5 Pro is aimed at the hardcore gamer, not someone who turns it on to play games a couple of times a week.

Yup that's what I gathered from this video.

It's a future proof Console with future games taking full advantage of the hardware. So in essence what we have now with current games is a glimpse of that future.

Still happy with my purchase either way.

Not really, but it makes a great doorstop. If Sony decides to sell me a disk drive this year it will certainly be a great console, but until then it's completely useless.

I disagree. I’m a casual gamer but I’m not happy with the base PS5. I read more NeoGAF than game but I’d like to play with the best console experience.

Not providing locked 60FPS with fidelity style graphics is a complete failure on the marketing of this machine.

As that alone, it has failed.

Good to see more people complaining about the lack of drive and stand.

Basically, this guy does not recommend it to anyone with its current offerings.

It does what it needs to do. It’s not a next gen system. It’s just better than the base. It’s like calling the series X a failure over the S. Because it’s the same exact thing more or less. You’re going to get roughly the same amount of frames in most cases but cleaned up graphics. The advantage of this over base is that performance looks as good as quality in a lot of cases. As far as the 60 fps fixed there was never the expectation for all games. But now at least most fall into the appropriate VRR range. Not sure how this is a failure but another option.

The marketing never claimed it would have "locked 60FPS with fidelity style graphics". It said it would have PS5 performance mode with fidelity mode graphics. And yes, it has largely done that.

Basically, this guy does not recommend it to anyone with its current offerings.

This is what he said.

"In the end, I'm glad I bought my PS5 Pro. I'm happy with the system, but for the majority of you who are thinking about getting a PS5 Pro and you are happy with your PS5 then it is really just not worth the money."

Key word: majority. It ain't for everyone.

All the bitching about the price, and I dunno...when I first heard the price, yeah it seemed kinda high, but I paid $600 for a PS3 in 2006. It's not like $700 is hard to swallow.
Closer to $800 if you include disk drive. And way, way more expensive outside the US. Launch PS3 had practically a PS2 in there with its hardware BC and one of the first Bluray players at its time. It was cutting edge even with all its hardware. Granted Nvidia pulled a quick one by announcing a brand new GPU and architecture in the same year.

Sony should've upgraded the CPU tbh. Especially at this price point where more people want that locked 60fps experience. Which goes for older titles or just standard Pro boosts with unlocked framerates. That would've made the price point at least a little more paletable. Where you'd see a traditionaly CPU bound games open up. Like, hypothetically if GTA VI is going to be 30fps game, Pro otherwise.. people would take that 60fps for sure and would buy a Pro for that if possible.

Atm the Pro is a decent upgrade for people who care for image quality and want a boost in performance - at nearly double the price. Though I guess for enthusiasts and console gamers it may be worth the premium.

Worth $700? Of course not. The right price would be $550~600 WITH the disc drive. But that's what happens when you have no competition.

That isn't realistic. Base price is $500 with the drive. The 2TB upgrade alone would push the price to $600. They are not going to give you the other upgrades for free, nor should they. As I've said before, I think the price without the disc should have been $600 but with 1 TB rather than 2TB. But yes, the fact there is no competition in this space is probably what allowed Sony to force the 2TB and the extra $100 price hike that came with it.

Man that 700$ price tag was the best thing for content creator, so many clicks. I haven't had time to play much due to being stuck in multiple renovation projects, but just taking less space in my furniture is great. Should be able to push my Rebirth hard mode this week. Booted in a couple of games, looks great.

Adding the 2TB is the confusing part. You'd think they would want to make it as cheap as possible. My only guess is that the extra storage space was actually very cheap for them but would allow the console to look more attractive. Doesn't make sense otherwise.

Adding 1TB is an incredibly cheap way to boost the price $100. The difference with Pro is that this was designed to make a profit rather than maximize unit sales.

The option Topher Topher mentioned would be nice but lets be honest, many would have complained about that. We'd be hearing how they are selling a digital console with only 1tb in 2024.

This is not the way to look at it. Sony themselves said it gives the player the choice of performance with fidelity like graphics. EVeryone knows that means 60FPS. If the defence force is going to start being pedantic then that is even more of a failure. This is a £700 console without a disk drive. I can't believe the defence for its shortcomings.

This is embarrassing dude, why are you defending them. Performance should be as close to 60fps as possible. Not 45-60FPS. Not for £700.

He does say what you quoted but at 13:25 he literally says "It's hard to really recommend the Playstation 5 pro to anyone right now"

In fact the whole section from 12 mins 40 seconds onwards is an absolute truth bomb.

Cuz the pro is underpowered. We can't even have fidelity and performance in a single mode in most games. The Price is the main issue here, I'm okay spending 800€ but that thing has to be a beast, which it isn't.

IMO no. Probably a beta test for what PS6 will do for around using AI to solve image quality.

Time for you to revisit every DF thread on this forum and complain that performance mode is bullshit in 90+% of games then.

Defending what? You are making up shit about the "marketing" and I'm telling you what the marketing actually was. Since when has "performance mode" on console ever been a locked 60fps? It hasn't and Sony never said that's what you are getting here. You engaging in fiction is what is embarrassing.

Truth bomb? That's one guy's opinion. Nothing wrong at all with his take, but that doesn't make it "truth".

Ok, His opinion clearly is shared by many people across the internet and when someone says performance it is wrong to expect 60FPS from a £700 console. I understand now.

No shit. The opinion that the Pro isn't for everyone is shared by me as well. I've said that countless times. I don't know who said it is "wrong to expect 60FPS from a £700 console". Sounds like more shit you just made up.

It will be so worth it next year, and before we see ps6, 4 years from now.
Yeah if you traded up you're paying about $4-475 drive included all in with tax. Future proofed and higher trade in value towards PS6. If you didn't do that I get it but you should have.
