Modern Vintage Gamer: Four Days Later...Is the PS5 Pro REALLY worth $700?

Another day another 'is the PS5 Pro worth it?' thread/video/article.

Heres a tip ... If it's worth it to you (or not) why do you care what others think? Unless you need justification for your purchase from random people on the internet (which is just sad to be honest)
Pretty much this. Its also ok to own it and still think its not worth it but be happy with it. I have a couch that was expensive and to me "its not worth it", but i also love the couch but i understand that the price was ridiculous.

I like pro versions can they win the generation? We don’t know yet, I have no problem with pro consoles, yes Sony is ton deaf on pricing, they could have easily let ps5 base run its course until 2030.

This is not the way to look at it. Sony themselves said it gives the player the choice of performance with fidelity like graphics. EVeryone knows that means 60FPS. If the defence force is going to start being pedantic then that is even more of a failure. This is a £700 console without a disk drive. I can't believe the defence for its shortcomings.
Performance doesn’t always equal 60fps. There is no way to control that. Sony doesn’t publish all the games on the console, so they would have no way of enforcing that unless mandated, which it isn’t. I have no idea what way you’re looking at it, maybe your own expectations that circumvent reality, as some pc games don’t hit 60fps solid no matter the current hardware.

Even for people who *want* the Pro to be worth it, there are still many questions about the hardware's future. So there is discussion.

Furthermore, all the Sony games do exactly what Cerny said.

Actually even better - the games have higher fidelity than PS5 30fps modes….at 60fps

No clue what he’s on about, he’s been on a hate campaign for the Pro since it was announced

I think it is fine to debate topics like this, but ultimately you are correct and there is no need for anyone to have to justify their purchase. Similarly if a product isn't for someone then that should be all need be said and they don't really have a dog in the fight. Either way, if there is going to be debate then it should be rooted in facts.

2030 lol? PS5 is struggling with UE5 games (among others) NOW, imagine what it'll be like in 2030

I have one and for now it's not worth the price imo, differences with the base PS5 are quite limited except for a few games. 700€ with a disc drive would've been a different story.
Why are you so impatient? There are 3-4 years ahead and PS5 PRO will always bring you bonuses in terms of clarity or performance.

I remember myself buying PS2. My budget was limited as hell at the time, at first I even regretted, like "Would I have died, if I had kept playing on my old PS1?"
But later I enjoyed the purchase 😂

Very easy pass for me. Needed that one game that makes you go fucking WOW, imagine a new Wipeout or G-Police that made you weep. Something that embraced that future cool vibe that Sony used to be all about and couldn't be achieved on current tech. A slightly wetter and shinier Horizon and Last Of Us just doesn't do it for me.

PS5P - too expensive for what it offers. Power jump is smaller than what it should have been.

Personally, I look at this upgrade the same way I might when looking at PC GPUs. If I'm looking at two GPUs and one has a similar performance upgrade as the Pro then I'm not sure I'd be inclined to spend $250 more. That's a tough sell. Now let's say that expensive GPU is Nvidia with DLSS and the cheaper GPU is AMD with FSR. That's a no-brainer upgrade, imo. That's how I see PS5 to PS5 Pro and that's before taking into account the small CPU boost and storage upgrade.

I don't want to take this into a PC/PS debate. Simply explaining my thought process on this as a PC gamer.

It's obviously going to depend on what games you're playing. But pretty much all the games I'm playing so far, do have base PS5 fidelity now running as the Performance mode. Certainly all the first party stuff is. In many cases its actually exceeding the previous base fidelity mode whilst providing 60fps. For me Cerny was on the level. I can only share my experience and its been damn good. My expectations have actually been exceeded so far.

To each their own. But everyday so far I'm appreciating the Pro more and more. But as I've said before. I knew what I was after going in. Its not for everyone and thats fine.

Good point indeed, the pro might come in handy in the future but at the time of release it's underwhelming imo.

Definitely worth waiting on the Pro if folks are looking for new games to take advantage of the hardware. I'm among those who see a lot I haven't played in the current list of Pro enhanced games. Mileage on the Pro as it stands now it going to vary from person to person.

It was a wise move to wait to play some of the newer games released. I think some people don't get that. Just because a game is 6 months or 3 months old doesn't mean it's not a new release. We knew the Pro was coming before it was officially announced

Nah, MVG is a dev too. A longtime fixture in the homebrew and emulation scenes, and lead dev on multiple current gen ports.

What time is it?
Watched this earlier and I'm probably taking MVG the wrong way but his line of thinking in that "there are no games built to take advantage of the Pro" strikes me as a bit odd, especially this generation where a lot of development still hasn't left behind the PS4. Just like the PS4 Pro, not every game will support it, especially as you go back further in the library, and the games that do support it will have varying degrees of support. For that reason combined with the price is why I've decided to skip out on the system, but I do appreciate that it exists as it will be a nice proving ground for some of the features we'll see in PS6.

It’s a freaking great machine for the price but it won’t play games at 120+ plus FPS while being max out. Love mine but it’s not a miracle Some of you guys think it is.

That depends on you, if you care about graphics and techs then maybe for you.

But for me I cant justify paying that much for slight upgrade version system I already own.

I'm saving money for Nintendo's next system since it gonna be actual new system and I'm excited about the new games comes out for it especially new game from Monolith Soft.

Who is saying this thing is going to "play games at 120+ plus FPS while being max out"?

Not providing locked 60FPS with fidelity style graphics is a complete failure on the marketing of this machine.

As that alone, it has failed.

Good to see more people complaining about the lack of drive and stand.

Basically, this guy does not recommend it to anyone with its current offerings.
Many games I've tried so far run locked 60 fps in Fidelity mode. Armored Core 6 : Fires of Rubicon is an example. No Pro patch required for that either.

That's a 10 page thread man. I searched and found one post that mentions 120fps.

If you have specific posts you want to point out then then please feel free. From what I've seen, most of the people who have actually bought the thing have had pretty reasonable expectations on what it can do.

If 700 dollars is in your budget and you actually play PS5 games, it's a no brainer.

If you can't afford it, you can't afford it.

The best way to look at it is this. How much are you willing to pay for a GPU upgrade to your PS5?

If you are in the camp of "it's not a significant upgrade" then I'm sorry, you are trying to convince yourself, not us. It is, and nearly every relevant new game that comes out will be better on the Pro.

If you are of the "it may not receive support" camp then you don't understand how any of this works and you should kinda research a bit I think. Again this is wishful thinking.

The only argument against the Pro that really has any basis in truth is that you cannot afford it. I understand and that does suck. However, if Sony offered a GPU upgrade via software that did the same thing on vanilla PS5 for free, are you telling me you would not want the upgrade? Of course you would. Everyone who owns a ps5, and I mean everyone, wants a free gpu upgrade. They just don't want to pay for it.

Here you go:

She: What kind of woman do you think I am?
He: We’ve already established that. Now we’re just haggling over the price.

PS: Also "Sony charged too much" is an argument against Sony and not the Pro. You are mad at Sony. That said, the XSX with similar SSD size and no upgrades is not much cheaper, so I think if you honestly compare the hardware costs vs what you get, it isn't that much overpriced, but that is just my opinion and well unrelated to the Pro's performance while gaming, which is elite. Every day that goes by, every game that comes out, we will be getting more for our investment here. Each new game that is pro enhanced increases the value of the pro itself.

Price point aside, i agree with his statement that this gen is like releasing hardware before software.

Ps5 had almost nothing in the first 6 months, psvr2 hadone of the worst launch lineups and even now its more and more filled with shovel ware, and now with the pro the best we get is a half ass implementation of pssr or some rt.

I have doubts the pro will be supported at a level like the ps4 pro and xbox x was as there at least was a reason but now with the lack of competition from xbox i dont think devs will actually make the effort to get the most out of it.

So of course its a hard sell but not due to the hardware.

What are your specs? At 4K DLSS Max Settings I averaged between 70-80fps out in the "wilds". With Frame Gen on well into the 100s. Looked and played great.
My PC has 6800 for GPU and a 7600X CPU. I tested at all graphical settings and performance was always underwhelming.

At max settings the game still looks muddy as hell with terrible textures. I took screenshots in one of the threads covering the beta. No matter the setting it looked bad.
