Finally bought a new PSP, but then pushed the demon onto someone else. Jesus.
Hardware abstraction layer dynamic link library is missing or corrupt.

Just do a cd/ and copy the file in question to the system32 folder.

All you need to do is replace the file on the hard disk. You (obviously) couldn't do that via windows as it would be using the file you're trying to repalce.

HAL.DLL is Missing - Updated by MVP Alex Nichol

Option 1:

Boot from your CD and follow the directions to start Recovery Console. Then:

Attrib -H -R -S C:\Boot.ini
DEL C:\Boot.ini
BootCfg /Rebuild
Fixboot

Option 2:

Boot from your CD and follow the directions below to start Recovery Console.

Insert the Setup compact disc (CD) and restart the computer. If prompted, select any options required to boot from the CD.
When the text-based part of Setup begins, follow the prompts; choose the repair or recover option by pressing R.

If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose the installation that you need to access from the Recovery Console.
When prompted, type the Administrator password. (if you didn't create one try pressing enter).

At the system prompt, type Recovery Console commands; type help for a list of commands, or help commandname for help on a specific command.

Most likely you will need to expand the file from the CD. The command would be expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\system32\hal.dll. Substitute d: for the drive letter of your CD. Once you have expanded the file type "exit" to exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer.

Why not just run a repair?

Is the hard drive new? Has it done anything funny like this in the past?

Thx. I couldnt run a repair because she didnt bring her xp recovery disc. I have mine, but it was for emachines only so a repair was probaby out of the question. Only other option was to try and find the dll on my recovery CD

nothing worked. It told be to use chkdsk. i did, and at 50% it said something about an unrecovarable error and stopped scanning. is the HDD fuxed?

It is possible that the partition is messed up. Before you go and redo everything, try using a different IDE cable. It doesn't happen very often, but when a cable does go bad, errors like this usually occur.
