Monster Hunter Freedom Unite Thread

Seeing ads in the subway for this was fucking weird, let alone seeing a fucking TV commercial while at the gym.

Seriously Capcom? about fucking time.

I managed to get a sinus infection just in time for a 3 day MHU weekend marathon :D

The bane of my existence since I havent managed to stockpile sonic bombs.

Yeaaaa, livers ehh? Fighting a Tigrex in desert will help if anyone can host for you, his scream will pull them out and you can kill/carve a few. Other than that you can do some Plessioth (fish him out with the frogs and he's easy) farming and hoard the supply sonic bombs.

HR8 and Felyne lvl 20!! I'm thinking this is the max for him, anyone's felyne lvl higher??

Full Green Plessioth Z and Purple Gypseros Z armor sets! they sure as hell make a difference for G quests, daaayuuuummnn... I just have one epic 3 monster hunt to finish off my 7star missions.

helped my friend get rush from hr2 to hr4. mainly me doing the work while he gathers materials in preparation for hr 4-6 stuff. made me realize how versatile and comfortable i am with great swords compared to the dual swords i'm trying to pick up. not too sure how to maximize my damage output with those things since they seem to have lots of limitations

thinking of making the purple gypceros armor with the runner skill. plus it has like 12 slots so you can pretty much stack other skills onto it. and base defense is really close to max'd out akantor armor. so upgraded it'll seem to make g-rank much more bearable. not really looking forward to the grind for parts though it isn't too hard to fight. i'll have to see how my outings against the naruga urgent goes...

The Gypseros Z is a good set, I like runner and i was able to get Evade +2 in it as well. Gypseros X has "carving celebrity" with no bad luck by the way. I don't know how capped out the defense is, since they've introduced the "true armor sphere" *sigh*

naruga is beatable in some G armor, but he's far from 2nd nature for me. Basically a spazzy tigrex that will fake you out a lot.

Coming for you nomar.
:lol Can't wait. Finally going to do some real hunting! :D

Also my PSP Nub is so shitty. I just order for a new unit, but it take at least two weeks to arrive. :(

Just got this game today and having a lot of trouble learning to be effective in combat =/. Probably just need more time to get used to quick on the fly camera rotating. For "the claw" I've been using thumb on analog and both the index and middle fingers for camera spins but is it better to just use the index?

I just use my index to control the camera. Don't know how other folks go about doing it, though..

I have played my 150+ hrs like that.

I see, I was doing more of a perpendicular index to pad, looks like you run with a near horizontal configuration.

On a different note, for my main weapon debating gun lance or greatsword, I figure gunlance is probably easier for beginners but might be weaker? Any opinions on the matter? (or suggest to use neither w/e).

yay, beated up the naruga and got to hr8. took a few tries. and i still don't quite got a handle on him as he is indeed quite spazzy and fast. just managed to do survive enough and do enough damage to take 'im down. only had 6 minutes left too. took him down with akantor armor so now i'm gonna go farm ceanataurs for a new set.

On a different note, for my main weapon debating gun lance or greatsword, I figure gunlance is probably easier for beginners but might be weaker? Any opinions on the matter? (or suggest to use neither w/e).

i started out with great sword and never really got the hang of lances. they're just way too slow for me. for great sword, i used the tactic of hit and run since you could still roll out to safety (or at least attempt to). that same tactic applies to ds, ls, hammer and hunting horn as well. but gs lets you block as well when in a pinch.

whereas with lances you can only do a few small hops. lances work on the theory of getting in close with the monster and using the shield to keep yourself there safely. the tradeoff is a huge lack of mobility. i just never got it to work in practice

don't think there are any bad choices in weapons. don't think there is a single weapon that's way better than everything else, though maybe it's the hammer. you could try things out in training and just pick whichever is appealing to you.

lol I just play like a normal PSP game, and then quickly rotate the camera or shoulder button center when needed.

As far as weapons, i'll just stick with blades and bows.

the Naruga is actually a hell of a lot of fun now that I've gotten a feel for his animation.
so far
I've managed to cut the tip of his tail off and break one of his eyes. I'm not exactly sure what carves you get for breaking his pieces, but it's not hard to do with the longsword. You can actually pitfall-trap him when he is in rage with glowing eyes and he'll spazz out for a long time letting you deal lots of damage. There doesn't seem to be a method for luring him into a pitfall since he jumps all over the place. Flashbombs work, but he'll freak out just as much as when he's in rage so it's not exactly safe.
Just get away of his front side when he lets out a strange growl, he'll flip and slam his tail down in front. it deals a lot of damage, even with g armors.

Lances and Gunlances take some getting used to.
And I hear you're supposed to use the Gunlance with Naruga, so you can knock him down.
They have a hell of a lot of range, so use it. With your Gunlance fully sharpened mash in the triangle and circle buttons for an enormous blast, with a good one you can bring some monsters to the ground. This is mostly helpful online when your friends can have at the beast, since you'll have to resharpen most times.

I have sunk 600+ hours into this game, and the gunlance is still an awkward mystery to me. I learned the game with the great sword, moved on to the long sword because it bounces off less and has the berserker attack bar (which never bounces off anything ever!), and have been trying to pick up the standard bow.

For the combat, it's really learning the patterns and timing of the monsters. You get to the point where you identify certain beginnings of animations, and know just how much time you have to go in, attack, then escape without getting hit, or lower risk. Each monster has different reactions to bombs, traps, similar items, and learning those weaknesses gives you a huge advantage when you need it. Also, a pivotal aspect of combat is what I call "The Oh Shit Jump." You have to have your weapon sheathed, and be spotted by the dragon (so this move is actually unavailable when fighting the blind Khezu), but you do a huge dive that has about 2 seconds of complete invulnerability to everything. It's crucial, and you really learn to oh shit dive into safe spots or through charging monsters just before they hit you, and make it out alright. The combat is in essence a slowed down version of street fighter, working as a combination of checks and balances, timing, and hit zones (you even usually get dizzy after a series of consecutive hits to your character). learning the varied moments of invulnerability to your character, and timing of your vs the monsters moves will be something that comes naturally the more you play.

Well I played around with the Gunlance only so far, still havent put very much time into the game yet so I'm still really learning the basics (how to effectively block, when to back hop since I can't roll, when to sheath and gtfo, etc) Did the first 5 one star elder missions (didn't manage to beat the Tigerex in mission 4 though) and the Giadrome.

I do have a couple other questions though since I can't seem to find the answers in the guide or in-game books. They keep bringing up capturing vs. slaying but how exactly does it work? On the giadrome for example after beating on it for a bit, it ran to the next screen (which is a sign of it getting weak iirc) so I chased it down hit it with some tranq bomb things and a shock trap but it just stood there paralyzed until I whacked it some more which killed it. Should I have just waited more or was it not weak enough pre-trapping?

Finally, do you have to make traps? I bought some trap tools but...cant combine them with anything, maybe I'm just not far enough yet...

Shock Trap =
trap tool + genprey fang
Pitfall Trap =
trap tool + net

Do people get ticked if you launch them with great swords?

The way around this it to avoid the uppercut and use the down strike/side swipe over and over again (it's a tad bit slower though, but not by much).

I've been using a gold dragonwood gunlance recently and man it rocks. I'm loving lances and gunlances vs certain targets, such as naruga and khezu.

for capturing, you need to wait until the dragon limps away, when he goes to retreat to his lair. (he doesn't need to be in his lair, but if he's limping away, thats where he will probably head eventually)

once they are in that weakened state, you get them with a pitfall trap, and then tranq bomb their face. I have never caught a smaller monster like a giadrome this way. You might only be able to do it with the bigger dragons.

You can do it. I used to do it that way when farming for Giadrome skulls.

Also anyone wanna play tonight?

BTW, my name on ad hoc is Chimera987. I am usually on world J50.

Finally got the full blademaster Volganos armor last night. Pretty sweet!

Finally went through the hassle of setting up Ad Hoc, and I'm loving it so far. My rank is 1, so I'll be doing a lot of exploring and buffing up before I can hang with the rest.

Is there a good compendium of knowledge somewhere? I've been bouncing between the gamefaqs MHF2, Unite, and the Monster hunter wiki but is there something I'm missing that would be more efficient?

I'm having some trouble with this urgent quest. I keep hitting the boss, but it manages to destroy the town before I can kill it off.

Yeaaaaa, not the easiest mission to solo but it's doable. BounceBomb+ (BounceBomb mixed with bomb arrowana) him when he's low. you can hit him with 20 of them, and he'll manage to stumble and fall so you can get his underbelly. 30 minutes is tight, but don't forget to spike him when he's close to the wall, a farcaster helps so you don't have to climb all the ladders (just farcaster back, and run to the button). And gather all the ballistas you can inside, so you can shoot him to bust his pieces off. He's easy to hit with the cannonball, but it takes some time to pull off.

The room I make usually has GAF in it somewhere. I will be on tonight some time later.

having quake resistance might help, if you find it's stopping you and lowering your damage rate. the trick without it is to stay just outside of range and run and whack it as soon as it drops

Ugh just beat my first Yian Kut-Ku and trying to do the training with all the different weapons. Got raped trying hammer and greatsword, aced Lance but I kinda expected that since all I've been using is a gunlance for the elder missions.

Keep attacking the same leg until he drops. Then go for the head.

Greatsword, you've just gotta stick and roll. Also make use of whatever items you have and know when to hit hard.

I'll try to get on tonight as well.

Alright, I will probably throw a room up in an hr.

I'd say get the Anvil Hammer (or a some fire or dragon hammer) and continuously hit Shen GaoRen in the body. He falls down way more times this way (10+ easily) and wastes a whole lot of time. When he's too high hit his legs, but I wait until he's about to attack to stagger (color change) his legs as it interupts his attack.

Only just made it to HR2...which is still a lot of time invested for a first-time player.

Love almost every weapon style (especially lance and gunlance), but recently I've been wrecking shop with elemental longswords. After learning the best way to evade and circle as necessitated by ls, the blades
Wyvern "Fall" and Blango Destroyer+ iirc
had been my mains for quite a while.

Fun thing about the game though is that just as you have a solid build going, the next new batch of hunts smacks you down. Case in point, my first run at
Red Khezu
was going well until my
Blango Destroyer+ iirc
kept wearing down and I had overconfidently walked into the fight with only a couple whetstones and without my usual gs/ls/lance/gl grind+ armor setup. I got him (not easily) the next fight.

Surprisingly great game solo, and as my Felyne comrades build up they are becoming of signifcant help.

HR4 and almost done with all 50 solo training missions, all solo so far. Anyone have a list of the new bows in MHFU stats and materials would be great :D

And whoever though having to complete all these training missions for +10 loading helm/ +10 fencing helm can go to hell, this is annoying as fuck.

Edit: just got barrage piercing isn't it suppose to be 10+ loading? Why is it 10+ capacity? WTF I just wasted 2 days doing this shit.

i'd like some clarification on affinity. i know positive means chance of more dmg, and negative means chance of less dmg. but i've also heard that -

+ gives more critical damage but doesnt give the monster much pain, meaning that it doesnt flinch a lot but killing it quicker.
- gives no critical attacks but gives monster greater pain making them flinch almost every time, killing it slower but still does the job.

the reason for this is, CAPCOM wouldnt put the - affinity with no reason and make the gamers think to not use - affinity. everything has a purpose in MHF. i love - affinity weapons especially on headlockin.... works like a charm, i guarantee it. peace.

is this legit or just bullshit? in other words, should i bother with Tigrex Tooth?

Total bull. Affinity is tied down to damage and nothing else.

Affinity is crit rate. If you crit you do about +/-25% damage, more or less. If you would do 100 damage to a monster but you crit, you do 125. Thats not that exact its done, but for what we're talking about it'll do.

As for that quoted part, monsters have a certain threshold of damage per body part. Once you damage them enough to go over, they flinch or fall over. If the head has a threshold of 124 but your attack only does 100 you won't flinch it without another attack, but if you crit you'll do 125 making him flinch.

Hope that makes things more clear.

Edit: Skip the Rex weapons, they suck balls.

LOL, they changed the meaning. Originally was loading which added an extra charge on the bows and +1 ammo on the BGs. Now it still has same effect but I think it's just called capacity now. Oddly enough.
For affinity. It only adds or decreases damage. Your only concern about flinch monsters is WITH or WITHOUT affinity. Without the affinity you can find out the amounts of hits it takes with weapon to flinch it to be prepared to wail on it, with affinity you lose count/pattern when extra damage occurs.

I just imported over my sword and shield only guy (HR5) and I'm having a blast. Soloed Dual Plesioth (was still a bitch) and Kirin (wasn't too bad).

Also I just made the Kirin Bolt Ultimas and that Ice Sword and shield that requires high rank Blango crap.

I quit my hammer only HR3 guy cause I got bored and I can't get motivated to get any further with my HR7 guy, but whatever.
