Monster Hunter Freedom Unite Thread

Still HR1 cause I'm not doing a whole lot of Gathering Hall missions yet (hell still haven't beat the Elder urgent Khezu bastards lightning balls can't be blocked). Built myself a fire hammer...something prototype mainly for Khezu but also to bash in the Daimyo Hermitaur's shell and claws since I'm trying to build that armor set. Really starting to get into the game now though.

After having played Monster Hunter Freedom Unite online, and a lot offline, I'd really like to take a break and try Phantasy Star Portable online. Would anyone like to join me later today? Please pm me or leave a reply in the thread.

Btw, MHFU is really cool. The japanese players have been very ncie and playful, even though they don't know english, french or norwegian. I try to speak a few japanese words, and they seem to be very gald that I'm trying :D

Also I wonder how many Capcom references they stuck into this game. Just found an RE4 one on page 4 on Carapaceon Info that made me chuckle out loud.

Got a PS3?

This game is insanely fun. Been playing some via PS3 ad hoc, and it works great.

Are there any guides on what weapon/armor routes to go for each choice of weapon type, or one should go for anything one can get a hold on?

I choose armor that gets me the kind of defense I want. Wepons with the kind of special abillity I want. I often change weapon without changing armor. (And vice versa)

I always thought the gold armor you can make from the Golden Rathian was suspiciously familiar....

Alright finally got Adhoc party set up (I think) so I'll keep an eye out for low HR games who don't mind bringing along a baddie =x
If you come on later tonight I can help you rank up.

Anyone have the Lion Kaiser Saber? I wondering if there is an upgrade after this and what its stats are, or is there an updated list somewhere on line with weapons that now can be upgraded again?

I tried using a Gunlance against Naruga and everything is alright until he does that move where his tail gets stuck in the ground. Even if I guard it still gets me, so I'm probably blocking in the wrong direction, but I tried facing all sorts of directions and it still gets me. :< Should I just not bother?

Also, one of my cats said the other day something about him wanting to become a comrade too, and during those times it's good to close my eyes, meditate, and press the select button. What the hell did he mean by that?

That move has a large splash area of damage that originates from his tail, if you're close to his hind legs when he does the move, you might be able to block it if you're blocking with your back to his legs? Just a theory, I'm actually going to go load the game and try this out.

It's definitely blockable when you're a bit further out from him.

Kick him?

So...I'm ready to get online up in this piece.

Is play-asia.com the only place where I can buy a WiFi MAX?

I buy the MAX, then download the Kai software and configure from there? There seems to be a WiFi adapter on the Kai site. Do I need to buy that as well?

Does all this work with Vista?

Sorry for the maximum noobishness.

Forget the MAX, its ancient and there are cheaper and better alternatives. Get a Planex instead.

Just got this game, have been playing Monster Hunter 2 for a long time (and a long time ago) so my skills are rusty to say the least. But what armor and weapon (sas, dual or ls) should I go after, I now have the Hermitaur and the Ceanataur set. Got the Devil Slicer, Djinn, Deathprize, Velocipray Claws+, Raven Blade, Princess Rapier, Dual Tomahawk+, Bladed Edge, Blango Decimater. Any tips would be helpful.

I got pretty far using the devil slicer, and all its upgrades. A really good sword, has great sharpness.

For armors, I got the Tigrex armor, and found it really helpful. It allows you to consume meat and potions twice as fast, and you can add a few jewels ot be able to see where the monster is at all times on the map.

One thing to do also, is improve your armor with armor spheres. It can make one particular suit a lot more durable.

finally got my router downstairs, can start playing online with you guys, ill send some invites/messages when i got it all connected, i just need help getting to hr7>_</

Thanks. Have improved them quite a bit, need +spheres to improve them further.

I hate fighting the Tigrex, so hoping I wouldn't need to fight him more than neccesery, but those skills are very helpful. Any good tips for fighting him, with the arsenal I have. Needed tons of traps and bombs the last time I fought him, managed him on HR 3, so fighting him on the elder quest should be more easy??

Just hit HR 8 last night. Soloed Nargacuga with my trusty hammer ;) After several severe beatings using the LS I gave up and pounded him to a bloody pulp. Should have heard the amount of cursing that went on last night.

I am currently using the Rathalos Soul U set for High Grade Earplugs and Akantor set for Sharpness +1 and regular earplugs. Both are fully upgraded. I mainly use LS, Hammer, S&S, and the occasional duals (Congalala). Too many to list but I am just hitting the G-rank upgrades now. I think I might start making some of the nicer hunting horns as well.

My Ps3 Ad-Hoc PSN is Shurtluck (its my room mate's ID but we both use it for Ad-Hoc play).

yeah, the Tigrex is pretty tricky. He is much faster than the dragons that came before him in other games, so he can seem pretty punishing at first. At least 70% of the time when fighting him, you are simply avoiding his attacks. Become familiar with his "roar, chomp" animation. It leaves him stationary for several seconds, allowing you to get in and get some good swings in. When he is in rage mode "throbbing red wounds", he will do the lunging jump twice in a row, and will always follow up with that resting animation. This is the easiest thing to see coming, and he ALWAYS rests after the two jump like that when raging.

If you are in the snowy mountains, you can also get him to charge into the flat rock wall in the top most snowy room, and his fangs will become stuck in the rocks for a few seconds, leaving him open.

He is vulnerable to shock traps, so take one, and then two trap tools and genprey fangs to make more in the field. flash bombs work too, but his moves become chaotic and random when he is stunned. You can cut his tail off, and break his face, both of which are very satisfying.

I utilize the invulnerable "oh shit" jump a lot when he does his charge. After raging, he may do the charge, and do a spin around and head right back at you, keep an eye out for this. Having your cat will help him toggle his attention, allowing you to get some back attacks every now and again.

He will also punch the ground, and send boulders or snowballs (depending on the area) flying in your direction. These flare out in 3 pieces. if your far enough away, you can sidestep into the spaces between them, or just lunge as they come at you. He would kill me a lot with this attack before I got used to his move set. Good luck! He is one of my favs to kill!!!

low or high rank, rath soul is good.

I've been interested in this game for awhile, I just have a quick question, how is the combat? In the videos i've watched there seemed to be some variety in the moves, i'm not expecting a deep combo system or anything, but I was just curious whether the fights consisted of just pressing the same button over and over, or there was some strategy or variety offered.

It definitely consists of pressing the same button over and over. For attacking anyway. For melee weapons, triangle is usually the main attack while Circle is some secondary, weaker, but not entirely useless attack. R button activates some special weapon functions. But usually, you just press triangle to attack. Pressing it several times yields a combo, and the number of hits in a combo depends on the weapon. A couple of weapons includes Circle in the combo.

And you can bet this game requires a shit-load of strategy. The combat is (sort of) simplified so you can concentrate on when, where, and how to attack, or whether to attack at all or just sit back (by that I mean keep avoiding the monster's attacks) and wait for a better opportunity. Or to use an item, or whether you should disable the monster with a trap.

And other things...

Yeah, the PSP controls give this game some of the simplest attack controls you can expect from an action game...which is odd since I think this is one of the most strategic action games available.

Positioning, timing, effective use of specific attacks, effective use of specific defense (knowing if you should block or avoid and then the where, when, and how of that choice), etc...

You don't use that many buttons (2 attack buttons, a shoulder button which is used as a modifier, and a dodge button) so it's more about how you use what abilities you have...and I'm not saying that in a generic sense

I don't want this to sound like a boiler-plate response from a fan because the Monster Hunter games are very strict about this stuff. Many people dislike these games because of how difficult/strategic they are but please don't let that dissuade you from giving Unite a shot.

Yeah, I think i'm going to pick this up when I get a GO. I owned a PSP before but never played online with it, so excuse my ignorance but how easy is it to hop online and join others or get others to join you in this game?

If you have a ps3, effortless. Using planex/wifimax, painful.

Anyone know how to get Xlink Kai to work on Tomato (custom WRT64G firmware similar to DDWRT)? I know there is a way to do it on DDWRT, so you should be able to do it with Tomato.

Thank you. But another question, I hired the cat, but it won't appare when I go on quest. Do I select him somewhere?

Did you hire a comrade of a chef? In either case go to the Felyne Kitchen (via your house) and check the two bulletin boards. The one on the right (blue) is the comrade one where you go to "Active/Reserve" --> "SelComrade" --> Select the Felyne you want. If you hired a chef instead run a mission and check back until she has comrades for sale.

I once helped Error set up his on a WRT54G or something, but in the end, he had bandwidth issues, any more than 2 players on the field and he would suffer random disconnects. He gave up on the idea and got a wifimax/planex dongle, fixed all his prior issues. I'm not sure what you're going for is worth the time.

That is so depressing to hear. I'd like to play, but I do not want to buy an adapter. I guess I'll wait til I get my PS3 later this year.

Anyone know of any popular Monster Hunter meetup spots in NYC? Like some sort of lounge or anything?

Loving the game. I'm already HR9 and was looking into armor combos when I found a very cool database in Excel format. After a long days work I was able to make an automated armor combo maker.

Right now I only have blademaster sets working, but I can easily add gunner later. I haven't included torso inc armor yet as it's a little hard, but everything else is working. The program will give you the set that has the skills you want with the highest defense possible if more than 1 set exists.

So please post your requests so I can test it out. Also if it uses a piece of armor that it's too difficult to make for you at the moment, you can tell it not to use it and find you a different set (say you haven't killed white fatalis yet, so combos using his armor are no use to you).

Also since I'm using the database I mentioned any errors in it are still in the program.

After I get the kinks worked out I'm planning on making it available here. So now give me your sets requests (remember, only blademaster and no torso inc sets at the moment), thanks.

I'd be interested in trying out your spreadsheet Crazygambit.

Had some fun for the first time with Lavasioth last night and he turned out surprisingly manageable. At first I was thinking he would be like Plesioth but he was much easier than that douchebag. Hammer worked very well on him as he leaves you plenty of opportunities for a super pound or triple pound.

HR2 and I have 2(+ w/e the HR2 urgent quest is) quests before HR3. The Cephadrome which was easy until the asshole ran away and I couldnt find him even with the paintball and using sonic bombs. And the one with the boss farting baboon which is the most annoying boss I've fought so far, 8 tries and the closest I've come to killing it was when he retreated to the YKK lair and was sleeping but when I started to beat on it he farted on me and I ended up getting knocked down and ended up killing me before I was able to use the deodorant and heal.

Try trapping him when he is sleeping and using a couple tranq bombs. Honestly some bosses are better captured since they are so annoying.

Wait till you try out the Green Congalala he has the explosive flatulence. Try pitfall trapping him when he is enraged and then hit him ;)

Holy shit. You're eight hours in and at Nargacuga?

God...I suck.

I'm two missions away from finishing rank 4 and I'm over sixty hours.

I've done this so many times, I get real close to finishing it then I end up rushing in and messing it all up. I tend to sulk after especially if it took over 30 mins.

What are you wielding/wearing when you fight it?

You're talking about the Congalala right? I don't believe the Blangonga farts...

One, stay away from his rear end but also once you've damaged him a bit, he'll reach out and grab something with his tail and throw it at you. If you're close enough it will sail over your head but if you're at the right range it will tag you and stink you up.

But...share what you're using. If you have a monster tagged with paintballs, it will show, period. Perhaps yours timed out and you failed to tag it with another paintball? Until you learn the patrol/flee patterns of the monster, you'll want to use paintballs alor more often.

I alternate between SnS, dual swords and the lance, giaprey armor set leveled to 4 or 5

Pick one and get good at it, really, REALLY good. The lance definitely takes some practice.

I'm a big gunlance "guy" and if you're going to use a lance, I'd advise you to use the gunlance; (in my own opinion, it just seems to be more maneuverable)

With the sword/shield and dual swords, you should attack Congalala from the sides primarily or head on when you feel particularly safe. When he does his three claw swipe approach, start to shift off to your right and turn 90 degrees. He always falls the same way and if you're positioned right, you can get a large number of hits in on his head.

For the moment, until you get significantly more confident in your defense, simply stay away from him when he rages as his damage output can be surprising.

With the sword/shield and dual swords, you need to stick and move. Two slashes and then roll away. Once you get more confident you can prolong the combos or demonize with the dual swords and then do the circle+triangle attack and shred him when he's landed after a belly flop, fallen after the triple swipe or attacking from the side or rear when he's sticking out his belly.

Your armour at the level you're at seems fine although I'm no expert.

This I cannot stress enough. The damage you take is not worth it. Be conservative in the beginning you will get the hang of his patterns and know when to hit a longer chain combo. Think guerilla warfare when using these weapons, hit and run.

It doesn't hurt to get good with multiple weapons. Some monsters just aren't meant to be killed with certain weapons.
