Monster Hunter Wilds - DF Tech Review - PlayStation 5/Xbox Series X|S - Graphics & Performance

Hilarious how DF won't do a video that compares Xbox Series X and PS5 Pro... sure they'll continue to bag on the Pro separately, but not in direct light with the Series X or a specifically modeled PC...

- PS5 Pro coverage will be separate video later, not in this video.
- Based on RE engine. First MH game to feature a seamless open world.
- Without too much pop-in and plenty of flora and fauna.
- Skin shading and hair rendering praised. Gameplay animation also praised.
- Compared to previous MH games, the tech and world improvements are obvious.

- Lighting can be very good at times. Uses SSAO and Baked GI combination.
- However, some areas can also look very gray-ish and some material don't reflect light properly
- GI and SSAO don't do a good job of shadowing smaller things
- No RTGI unlike Dragon's Dogma 2
- Fixed time of day, no dynamic cnanges.

- 3 Basic modes and 2 toggles, total of 8 modes.
- Frame Rate mode can be capped to 60, Resolution can be capped to 30 and Balanced to 40 (only on 120hz displays).
- All modes can also run unlocked.

- Frame Rade mode looks notably visually worse, Balanced and Resolution look very similar.
- Average resolutions: Resolution: 1656p, Balanced 1242p, Frame Rate 900p.
- Uses FSR1 to up-scale to 4K, DRS also observed with Frame Rate hovering between 720p to 1080p.
- Volumetric changes between modes, Frame rate has simplified SSR and worse GI coverage

- Most general coverage below is based on the base PS5:

- Frame Rate does OK job at 60 with dropped frames, VRR owners will benefit
- Resolution is more closer to locked 30 with some drops
- Balanced suffers frequent drops below 40 but around 40 (no severe drops)
- All modes can be uncapped but Balanced and Performance still tend to stick to their caps.
- Resolution uncapped can reach high 30's, close to 40.
- LFC is not supported on PS5 so uncapped feels choppier even with VRR capable displays
- (adam's explainer: PS5's VRR range for non LFC games is between 48 to 60hz, so anything below that is essentially not VRR covered)
- DF thinks general performance can be improved, Performance mode in particular is rough visually.

- Does not have NPC pop-in in your face like DD2 did, thankfully.

Xbox:

Series X:
- SX is basically identical to PS5 both in terms of visuals and performance.
- When both are uncapped, they're very similar with PS5 having a very slight up-lift
- Image Quality, performance and visuals are basically a match.
- Xbox's better VRR support for Uncapped Resolution and Balanced mode is beneficial for 120hz display owners
- (adam's explainer: Xbox has system level LFC support for 120hz displays as well as a broader VRR range by default, so the VRR coverage is 'better' per DF)

-Series S:
- More visual cuts, SSR is cut, texture resolution is lower.
- Single 1080p mode but image is softer
- Performance has drops below 30 with mid 20 drops in monster fights
- Uncapping doesn't do much other than going a bit above 30 in slower times

No clickbaity title, i'm susprised :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

Edit: lmao at the praise to skin and fur :lollipop_squinting:

These dudes just can't be honest and say that it looks like shit for a nextgen only, high budget game, they always have to sweaten the pill to get games for free and being invited to events.

Not that i expect much from these hacks after their 2024 graphic awards...

I have the game pre ordered for xsx but imma cancel it and wait a couple a months, i played ton of mh rise and mh world and mh wild doesnt look that good or seem to play that good now

Yeah I'm probably playing this next gen just like I played trough World for the first time last year.
720p-1080p with FSR1 for 60fps is a dealbreaker, specially with visuals that don't even look particularly great.

The worst combo is a game that looks mediocre visually, but also runs like shit. At least with eye candy, you can understand why there's a performance hit.

Like DD2, Capcom again looking like they've taken a big release that could have done with more time in the oven and rushed it out before the end of the FY.

What makes this game so much more demanding than Dragon's Dogma 2?

I guess the biggest thing would be that different teams worked on it. The MH games have always been wonky, MH World was also something of a poor game technically on PS4/XBO.

Granted I've only played a couple minutes of the beta but it has to be one of the ugliest games I've played in the last few years.

Jeeeesus!

Hopefully the PS pro saves the console versions. Should be good for less than 10% of the total Playstation userbase.

PS5 and Series X almost the same (it performs slightly better on unlocked PS5) and Series S a total disaster, but the truth is that all versions are disappointing on a graphical and technical level, I don't understand how an engine like RE engine that works so well in linear environments in open worlds needs such high resources, it is clear that it is not suitable for this type of game.

Maybe badly configured by the player... ?

This. Haven't watched it all yet but seeing the opening footage I was like holy shit he didn't calibrate?

Fixed time of day, no dynamic cnanges.
This is also confusing to me? The fuckin beta has a full day/night cycle. You can even open the map and it shows you with a big infographic exactly what weather you can expect and when it's going to be night and what monsters will be there and when.

This whole tech analysis reads as undercooked.
