Monster Hunter Wilds open beta impressions

Seems like PC is the way to go. Played the beta on Steam and it looks ans runs beautifully for me. Some minor hitches here and there but I can always crank a thing or two down

These aren't the same kind of attacks. The delayed attacks from monsters is how MH has always worked. And are to allow the player to time and place their next attack or setup.

The delayed attacks from Souls games (first largely seen in Dark Souls 3 and now rampant in SotE) are just lazy attack methods to catch the player rolling.

Some monsters had them in the past, but they're increasingly common and janky animations are really bothersome the way they change in speed unnaturally. Magnamalo is a prime example, and it seems we are seeing this on new monsters now like Rey and Doshugama.

Used all weapons in the beta but Hammer shone the brightest for the quality of life changes, even if simple. My Insect Glaive is probably the most disappointing change coming from World and Rise iterations. Chargeblade, Gunlance, Switch Axe, Hunting Horn, Bow, Heavy Bowgun, Longsword are all top tier weapons, but Bow and CB and Swaxe are just on a tier of their own.

Only weapon I truly didn't enjoy at all was Light Bowgun, don't know but the special ability of planting mines and all is underwhelming. Heavy Bowgun all the way between the two. Sword and Shield is awesome with the slide attack and all the combo routes. Idk, but I may use any weapon in this version and be happy with my choice.

I feel the same way I felt when I tried to play Black Desert. 'What do you want from me?' I didn't get it. Also does lock on not work? My character is always attacking away from the enemies. Controls are weird. Game seems like it sucks. I don't know what people like about this series. I'm obviously playing it wrong.

lock on just affects the camera, it doesn't make your attacks home in, you always have to position your attack direction manually.

OK, ll upgrade my GPU this blackfriday in order to play this on PC, so many good weapon in this game.

HBG having a shield on the go is super OP, IG is fun too, but u need at least 7 fingers to play it right, i ll be all over the place with weapons like i did in World.

I mean, the console version is legit a disaster.
runs like shit, looks worse than some Switch games

the scene below runs barely at 50fps. the resolution here is probably 720p at best, however I haven't pixelcounted it or anything.
additionally, notice the clear and ugly signs of tier 1 VRS on the rock pillar on the right. that in parts looks unironically PS1 era resolutions.

and even if this ran at native 4K it would look worse than the average Xbox One X enhanced game

Tried this last night with some friends. Why does this game look so bloody bad, everytime I think we reached peak fucked image quality some new contender runs out screaming hold my beer. I screwed around turning things off like depth of field, bloom, motion blur yada yada and even at native resolutions it looks rough as guts.

You are playing it wrong.

You learn to aim your weapon.

Everyone goes through this. The previous entries were even worse with “wtf is this?”

This… fucking thank you.

I loathe Souls boss fights for this reason. I adore Monster Hunter for this reason.

One is just a game of trial and error (and that bosses can 360 pivot on their axis to hit you with a delayed attack).

The other, both monster and players commit to an attack. Little ridiculous tracking.

Another kick in the teeth for the shittiest generation ever.
Probably going to cancel my Amazon pre order for now.
Wait for much needed improvements.
I shouldn't have to fork out for a fucking Pro to play this scruffy effort with something approaching half decent performance.

Wtf, I didn't even know there was a lock on.

The lock on isn't like Souls or Zelda, you lock on the Monster to track it mostly.

I've played a bit more now and I have to say it was a mistake to release this demo. Either the performance is massively improved on all platforms, or it's a hard skip for me.

I absolutely hate this latest delayed attack trend from FROM. It’s such trolling. And it keeps getting worse. They kind of lost me with latest expansion. I loved the world but some of the bosses, especially the last one, just completely burned me out on FROM at the moment.

They did an excellent job with AC6, though. There’s hope.

Is there a way for friend invites to just work? I invite a friend while I'm in a lobby and also sent a friend request. He is in my link party too but I don't see him at all in the world. Wtf?

Should we not be able to see our friends in the camp too? I mean I do see other players.

I played console version only, fidelity mode ( ot touching performance mode), no game on Switch looks on par (not talking art style).

the performance mode, which drops to almost 30fps (so I don't even wanna know how the fidelity mode runs), runs clearly at or below 720p, with extremely obvious VRS that turns parts of the image into essentially pixel art, and has ZERO graphical elements to justify either the low framerate or the below PS360 era image quality.

RE Engine's fall from grace needs to be studied. because my god, this has to be the ugliest and worst running game I've played in a long time.

in conclusion, I feel like a game that runs at 720p, with super pixelated textures, that has issues running above 30fps, is absolutely comparable with some Switch titles.
is the comparison a bit hyperbolic, sure, but the fact that it's only a small exaggeration is what's crazy here.

I tried practicing with the Longsword but I just wasn't feeling it so I switched to the Hammer and that just felt fun and bonking shit until it falls over is great so I think I'll practice using the Hammer for awhile

Hammer is a great beginner choice because of it's mobility. (And bonking heads to inflict stun is always popular online)

Switch axe is a great weapon if you get tired of hammering and want something a bit more in depth.

The game's graphical performance is shockingly bad. The textures are so low-resolution that some objects barely appear to be textured. The image quality is terrible. The dithering effect on transparencies is the most obvious and aggressive I've ever seen. And the frame rate makes it impossible to have fun playing. The only good thing is the quality of the creatures' animation and nothing else. Nothing else really.

I've played so many more detailed things (both in terms of modeling and texturing) on the PS5 at 60 fps with good image quality and seeing how Monster Hunter Wild runs on the PS5 is more than offensive... it's wild.

So a few things are very unclear to me in the beta. I'd love to just go explore this map with friends and hunt creatures and/or bigger monsters, but it seems it doesn't work that way.

Is there no way to post a quest to just explore the location, have friends join in and done? If not, my next question is, how do I get new optional quests because I still have the same two ones and no new ones get added.

Third question, when I check lobby member quests I see all kinds of quests about monsters such as Balahara and so on, so these people actually activated and posted these quests, how? I'd like to do this too and take on these quests with friends.

Last question, why do I see tons of actual players in base camp, but not my friends?

sounds like they just started fighting the monster, which activates the hunt and then sent an SOS signal.

If they're in the lobby you're in and don't have restrictive quest options, you'll see them and be able to join. SOS flares make the quest available to anyone even if they're not in the same lobby, I believe the default option is not to auto-SOS.

love the amount of people in a hub. makes it feel alive.
i hope the next game will be a level above this one like a MMO where you can see people running in the fields and can randomly join hunts kind of like you can randomly join a fight event in destiny 2.
looking forward to play the full game.

I prefer the old format with offline has you in a village or hub and online you go to a different area. I really do not like having to join a lobby right after the start screen. Makes this new Monster Hunter feel more like an MMO.

Which if they want MH MMO they could bring over Frontier and give me the Tonfa weapon type finally.

This game literally triggers me with how chaotic everything is with a million tutorial prompts and confusing controls. I got into MH World eventually but not sure I wanna put in the time and effort here. That being said it looks really nice.

The game asks if you want it to show tutorials right after character creation.

I like seeing the hustle and bustle of the hub.
Really liked it in world during the Safi and Kulve events, made the game feel more alive.
Yup, you're part of a guild of hunters. Being surrounded by a bunch of them in your headquarters is exactly how it should be.

I've played a little bit of the beta and I'm enjoying it so far but man the performance is pretty bad sometimes, especially in the hub/camp area. Went from a solid 60fps (vsync on) to 35-40fps in the hub. With frame generation turned on it's 70-90+ in the camp but it fluctuates so much. All medium/low settings on an RTX 4080 Super with DLSS on and set to Performance.

HOPEFULLY some of this will be fixed by the time the game releases. I'm not going to hold my breath on it though.

Also I have to say, the character creator is amazing in this game.

The game immediately throws you into the thick of things, it took me a while to get my bearings and I have 2k hours in world. I image it's going to be much more gradient and tutorialised in the actual game.

Have you not tried fidelity mode with 120hz mode on? The framerate is quite stable even in Rey Dau thunderous fight.
