Most definitive version of Tetris?

There are so many versions of Tetris, many with different scoring systems, level up methods (somes times lines, sometimes score)or playfield sizes (especially if you get some of those LCD handhelds that are called 'block game'), but which version of Tetris is your best, and why?

I haven't palyed that many, but my vote currently goes to Tetris Dx for GameBoy Color. It uses the successful CLassic GB Tetris formula scoring system (which I think is the best), has both rotate functions (clockwise and anti clockwise -some games I;ve played only have one or the other, but I like to use both), aswell as the sneaky T-piece rotate into a T shaped hole. Sure, it's easier to reach the maximum level of 30, but that's because its controls are much more smooth and responsive. It has colour graphics, as well as stats for your login, a vs. mode against the computer (you can even play 'yourself'), and most importantly, a battery-save! It even saves halfway through a game (you can pause and switch the GB off,a nd it saves where you were).

Portability for Tetris is a must. The ONLY complaint I really have with Tetris Dx is the fact that the game over animation takes too long and is unskippable (I normally just rest the machine to avoid having to go through it).

So, which Tetris do ya reckon?

Does Tetrisphere count? It's not Tetris "per se", but it's the best damn Tetris knock-off game that ever came out. The core gameplay, blowing up pieces atop a giant sphere covered in Tetris-shaped blocks is totally addictive, especially with all the chains and combos you can do. Presentation and music are top notch and fit the game brilliantly. Never was this good quality-sounding music heard on the N64.

But if we're talking real Tetrises, it would have to be The New Tetris, once again on N64. Still awesome music, by the same guy from Tetrisphere. The game featured awesome backgrounds and graphics. Controlling pieces feels good and they snap right into place just right. It had neat little additions, like a "shadow" piece showing you exactly where your piece would land, a see-ahead of 3 pieces, and a space where you could store one piece and swap it with another.

But it was the 4x4 block-making gameplay that made The New Tetris shine. If you placed pieces in a perfect 4x4 square, it would become a cool-looking giant silver 4x4 block. Breaking it down with lines would add up to massive scores. And if you made your 4x4 block with 4 of the same pieces, it would become golden instead, and rack up even more points. Brilliant.

Oh and let us not forget Tetris Attack, which isn't really Tetris at all, but still the funniest puzzler ever created.

Yeah, I bought Tetrisphere when it first came out! It was ok, but far too 'random' - not that much emphasis on skill. I don't like gimmicky puzzle games too much - and most tetris knock-offs are exactly that. You were right though, the music was absolutely awesome (bested only by games like Jet Force Gemini). I never played New Tetris, but I always wanted it -had a four player mode too, right? Still, the whole see ahead of 3, and giant blocks nearly seemed tacked on, and diluting the purity of Tetris. Bah, humbug, I don't think I could ever appreciate a non-classic version. kind of annoying. I played Super Puyo puyo (under the guise of Kirby's Avalanche) for SNes, but that was more of a multiplayer game, and I trademakred this awesome technique for chaining combos - basically involved a stack of red beans, sitting next to a stack of, say, purple beans which had red beans on top. Next to that was a stack of green beans with pruple beans on top...and so on and so forth...pop the bottom stack of the last in your chain, adn they all come down sequentially, and will totally annihilate your opponent. Noone ever wanted to play me.

Hate to break it to ya, but you didn't trademark that. Heh. THAT is part of what Puyo Puyo is all about! Chaining is the key in succeeding in that game! Ahhh, what fun!

Yeah, I know, but in my play group, I was the only one who could do it consistently. Weiner is me!

TNT, By far. The multiplayer on that game was absolutely phenomenal.

I second Tetrinet. Free, online, rankings, and skinnable.

Why can't we get something like this for Super Puzzle Fighter II :( :(

A new Tetris for GBA (I would've bought Tetris Worlds if it had a SAVE), or even DS would be excellent. What would you demand in a new Tetris? Gimmick modes? Gimmick powerups? Downloadable 4-player?

Come to think of it I also had Tetris/Dr. Mario on one SNES cart. cool. Too bad it was at a time when my snes pads were junk, and then not long after, my SNES was stolen with my entire collection of games.

I have been looking for years for a PC port of the MAC version. I loved the backgrounds...All I can say is that level 7 featured a Moscow Station with a militar walking and level 9 some cosmonauts in the space...

I know...Puzzle Fighter is one of, if not the best puzzle game i have ever played, right along Puyo Puyo and Devil Dice.

DCX

Tetris DX, for sure. Awesome game. In my top ten favorite games ever. I remember just playing this game for hours, trying to get a higher and higher score and lines.. I had like 400 or 500 something lines and a massive score.. it was great.. :D

I have always wanted to play the Sega Genesis versions of Tetris. But Nintendo put a stop to that just like they did to Tengen versions of Tetris

I vote TetriNET. TetriNET2 went a little overboard with special attacks and I don't like the fact that you can no longer run your own server. If you want to stick to console versions, then Super Tetris 2 + Bombliss, Super Tetris 3 (including Sparkliss and Magicaliss), and Tetris Battle Gaiden (similar to TetriNET), all on Super Famicom, were the best versions of the game that I have played. V-Tetris was interesting as well; too bad it made your eyes bleed (Virtual Boy). Tetris Worlds is the worst. They somehow managed to screw up every possible thing that made Tetris great.

Those cheap Brick Games were pretty good back in the day

Yeah...my parents actually had a couple of those on their coffee table, and they used to play all the time - they got pretty good though. But then I came along and absolutely smashed their high scores (like nearly ten times over - the speed system went up according to number of lines - they always did 1-2 lines at a time - I settled for no less than a full tetris as often as I could,a nd thus racked up huge scores for the same number of lines!). They haven't played in years now though. Maybe due to high score, or the fact they ran out of batteries and couldn't be bothered getting replacements.

On that note, I got my Dad to give Goldeneye a go once. He had trouble just wandering around.
