Danish TV shows cartoons mocking Prophet Mohammad

COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - Danish state TV on Friday aired amateur video footage showing young members of the anti-immigrant Danish Peoples' party engaged in a competition to draw humiliating cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad.

The video images have surfaced little more than a year after a Danish paper published cartoons of the Prophet that sparked violent protests worldwide.

The images, filmed by artist Martin Rosengaard Knudsen who posed as a member of the party for several months to document attitudes among young members, show a number of young people drinking, singing and drawing cartoons ridiculing the Prophet Mohammad.

The faces of the young people were blurred in most of the footage. One cartoon appeared to depict the Prophet Mohammad as a camel, urinating and drinking beer. The competition took place in early August, according to Danish media.

Another cartoon strip aired in the partly masked footage on state TV seemed to show the prophet Mohammad surrounded by beer bottles and included an image of an explosion.

Members of the youth wings of other parties, including the ruling Liberal party, criticized the DPP on Friday. Kenneth Kristensen, a senior member of the DPP's youth movement, also criticized the events, but stopped short of apologizing.

"It's not my kind of humor and it would not have happened if I had been there. It must not be repeated," he told Danish state TV.

The Danish Peoples' Party rose to prominence in a 2001 election on a platform that combines emphasis on increased spending on schools and care for the elderly with a strong anti-immigrant stance.

It has been accused of racism, but has been a political ally of the center-right coalition led by Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen since 2001 and gained more than 13 percent of the vote in an election last year.

In September last year Danish daily Jyllands-Posten published 12 cartoons, including one showing the Prophet Mohammad with a bomb in his turban. They were later reprinted elsewhere. Muslim clerics denounced them as blasphemous, sparking protests in which more than 50 people died in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Most Muslims regard any depiction of the Prophet Mohammad as offensive.

Seriously, WTF is wrong with the Danes?

To me, it looks like the Denmark flirted too closely with the extreme right in the last few years, giving them power, media exposure and confidence and the Danes got more than they bargained for in the process.

The question, sir, should be, "WTF is wrong with the Muslims?"

Please tell me, what is wrong with muslims? Why should they not be offended by this?

They can be offended. But they should not resort to embassy burning and violence becuse they are offended, especially when they are offended by a goddamned cartoon.

Yes I agree with that and the muslims who do go out and resort to violent protests are dumb asses because all they're doing is hurting other muslims and their own countries.

But for the Danes to start this shit again despite the consequences which they are aware of, they really are asking for it and that it is probably not something good.

They're just a few hundred years behind Christianity in terms of overreacting. And just like Christianity, all extremis behavior will shink down to some backwater town in the "Deep South".

Seriously just stfu, do you expect muslims to just stay quiet and listen to the insults against the religion?

I love freedom of speech, but i also know that with that freedom comes consequences to the things i say. The danes making these cartoons is just like a lone white supremacist spewing off hate speech in front of thousands of black people, he's just asking for it. What the reaction to these cartoons will be, no one knows, but we all can agree nothing good will come of it.

Why would you piss of someone who is already mad?

If the Danes think they made a mistake they can just look across the sea at Malmo and see what a real mistake looks like.

Are the Danes at fault for the negative reactions that follow from publishing a cartoon? I think not. They publish a cartoon of Muhammad. Radical muslims murder and burn things as a result. Who are we to blame? Certainly not the Danes. And why protect freedom of speech if we should say only innocuous things?

Shut the hell up.

Part of being allowed to interact with the western world is learning that your religion isn't anything special, and it isn't immune to being critiqued. Christianity, Buddhism, et al learned how to deal with it; so, what's your problem?

If you continue to get pissed off at every little provocation, people will stop listening to what you have to say. They'll eventually get tired of your antics and fight fire with fire. Take my advice - sit down, shut up, and enjoy the ride.

Absolutely positively 100% ****ing serious. If you have anything to say against it that does not involve a series of emoticons, I wish you would say it.

I don't get what's so funny.

Honestly getting mad at the danes is like saying the drunk guy deserved it when Bob White took his eye out. It doesn't follow. Is it in bad taste? Sure you bet. Does it deserve the reaction it will get? No.

The Danish cartoon makers are at fault. You don't go around freely insulting things people hold dear without expecting repercussions. Do I agree with the violent response of the Muslims? No. But would their be this sort of reaction without the initial provocative action? No.

This sort of like that little situation where a little piece of trash goes around insulting people and expects to get away with it. He then goes and insults the wrong person and gets punched in the face. The people making this KNOW what kind of their reaction they're going to get. It's going to be their fault when they reap the fruit of their labors.

As someone who is black (half), I can understand how even a "little cartoon" can infuriate. Is this just a cartoon as well that we should hold no outrage over?

Would we just 'laugh this off' if this sort of drawing was syndicated in major newspapers or there was a contest held to create these kinds of cartoons? Now take that a step further and insult these people's reasons for living... Something that has eternal repercussions in their mind.

Why don't you take your own advice?

Yes it's critiqued and incorrectly and that's why we come and argue the points, do you really think we're just gone sit and listen to all tehse Islam bashers like COCKLES and the such?

I don't give a shit if people take shit about muslims when those muslims actually deserve it, but to talk shit about Islam while being ignorant about it what sets me off which is what most people on this forum do, so why don't you stfu and maybe contribute in the discussion instead of defending a stupid statement such as "The islam defence force has arrived"

You're expecting too much out of Muslims. Their history has shown what reactions you should expect from the Muslim community.

Here's a principle Hitler held dear: Jews are worthless dogs and should be systematically exterminated. Let's imagine that a man living in the 30s drew a catoon that mocked this principle of Hitler's. The SS then came and raided his house and killed the man. Who here is at fault--the cartoonist, who according to you should have known better than to perform an action that held such negative consequences; or Hitler and his followers, who raid and murder for a cartoon that ridicules their insidious principles?

Why are societies so ignorant? They need to recognize that there is a religious group that takes religion very seriously and can’t handle lame jokes! Just leave them alone….

It is COMPLETELY the Danes fault as they, for 5 months, did not want to engage in rational dialogue.

The peaceful reactions in the form of the letter campaign, legal campaign, and complaints to the government, before the Danes completely ignored it, was completely acceptable.

Yeah, like how the Jews enjoyed the ride in Nazi Germany.

Man that perfectly sums up how I feel about the whole thing as well, with your last sentence bolded for emphasis.

That just isn't how the world works though. And because humans suck it probably never will.

I can't believe those Danes dress so provocatively. They're just BEGGING for it. I mean, they're free to wear what they want, but they should be prepared for the consequences.

Dude, you didn't get the memo? Muslims are the 21st Century version of Jews...

Doom_Bringer: What some people call "lame joke", other here obviously label them as honest "critique", and "provacation" (got those two words from an earlier post) that they are supposed to be cool with. :P

Yes just leave them alone. There are satirical comments being made about Christians, the Pope, Jesus, and Jews in mainstream publications all around the world, but just leave the Muslims alone.

So you actually want to listen to what I have to say?

Look, I've had many "flame wars" or "debates" on forums and NOTHING good comes from it. All I could do is laugh in this situation. I thought what you said was ridiculous IMO. I say "IMO" because a lot of stupid people think the way you do.

The cartoonist's are to blame (notice I say "cartoonist's" as to "Danes" as that would be generalizing). Simple as that.

It's not "Freedom of Speech" to totally disrespect a religion's belief... It's hate speech.

Do I like the way the "Muslims" reacted after many attempts to get the cartoon removed? NO... But then again.. who would listen?

Don't think you're not going to get a somewhat similar reaction from Christians, Catholic, Jews, or other religions. Try posting a Heil Hitler flyer in a synagogue or walk inside one with a copy of Mein Kampf in your hand. Try drawing and showing a cartoon of the Virgin Mary having sex to devout Catholics and see what kind of reaction you will get.

There is a difference between a reasonable political critique of an issue and outright mocking of something someone holds sacred.

No there isn't. Show me ONE publication that blames Jesus for the molestation scandal in the Catholic Church. Maybe showing Jesus getting a blowjob, or say, fondling a little kid.

I'll give you a week or so to find this.

Is there a genocide of 600 million Muslims coming up?

There's been a lot of "grassroots" advocacy of widespread unrestricted bombing of Muslim nations. Will that become government policy? I don't think so...but if it did happen, would most American's care? I don't think so either.

Do I like the way the "Muslims" reacted after many attempts to get the cartoon removed? NO... But then again.. who would listen?

That's the funniest part of this situation.

Majority of Muslims react calmly: No one gives a ****

Minority of Muslims act with fury: OMG WTF they should not be able to react at all if they can't react properly

Whatever the reaction, it won't involve blowing something up... Unless you are killing unborn babies.

All religion takes itself serioulsy. Muslims don't get a free pass. Can you tell me why mocking all other religions but Islam is acceptable?

Oh, Kevm3, religion and race are not equal.
