MovieGAF - Your Most Frustrating Cinema Experiences

After watching Bad Boys For Life and feeling extremely underwhelmed, I wanted to discuss the most frustrating and annoying experiences at the movie theatre. Personally I was looking forward to this latest instalment of the franchise, especially since the last one was released in 2003! The promotional marketing material made it out to be the final film with Martin Lawrence's character boldy proclaiming "he's retiring", in contrast to Will Smith who wants to ride "one last time". Since so much years had passed and the great deal of fond memories I had of the earlier films, I decided to buy a ticket and check it out and boy was I surprised.

The trailer had the hallmarks of a Bad Boys movie with cinematic views of the beautiful Miami landscape, action set pieces that had Michael Bay's fingerprints all over them (even though he didn't direct, but appears in a cameo appearance) and scenes which pushed the narrative that they aren't boys anymore, but mature men with families and responsbilities. The jokes and humour left a lot to be desired, especially when the younger actors do a bad rendition of Inner Circle's theme song for the movie, coupled with the unknown directors and modest budget for an action movie, there were a lot of red flags staring me in the face.

But after having watched it, the whole thing was absolutely atrocious. The dialogue was incredibly cheesy and sometimes borderlined on cringe, the action scenes were so loud and messy that it was hard to follow what was going on, the script was extremely basic and amateur (despite a couple of decent plot twists) and the humour was the epitome of inconsistent.

Martin Lawrence went on Jimmy Fallon and had the nerve to state the reason behind the long wait was the script quality. He shouldn't be allowed to star in another movie after making such a stupid and ridiculous statement. The real reason it took so long was because Will Smith went off and did other movies and now they couldn't afford his higher salary, Lawrence hasn't been relevant for years and they couldn't hire top notch directing talent and writers for a dead franchise.

And if that wasn't enough there's a sequel coming and a spinoff alongside that :messenger_grinning_smiling:.

TLDR - Bad Boys For Life is absolute garbage.

Your turn.

I went to watch Avatar in a packed cinema back in December 09 and was sat next to some weird nerd kid who had his legs crossed and was eating noodles out of a takeaway box with his hands. He kept making coughing noises cuz he needed water the entire movie and I was sitting there like "He better not fucking ruin this movie for me." Also had a grandma sitting the opposite side of me complaining the entire time. It was actual fucking suffering. Movie wasn't good btw.

You just described the first two movies. Really don't know what you were expecting from Michael Bay movies with no Michael Bay.

Michael Bay brought some flair to his movies which weren't present here. The action scenes in the earlier movies were explosive but you could see what was happening and the sound didn't rape your ears. Not to mention they were much more funnier and well made overall.

I thought this thread was about people using their cell phones during movies.

I have an opinion on that.

My go to move if I'm in range is to shoot really wet spitballs at the offender. But tbh I haven't went to the theatre in like a year lol.

I mean, the only Michael Bay movie that's actually remotely good is The Rock, so it's hard for me to comment. I'll just leave it.

Come on man, don't be like that.

Bad experiences in the movie theatre are all welcome here.

Not only was this bitch texting the whole movie, but her screen was at max brightness, it wasn't silenced and she had that 'sound feedback while you type' click click click enabled and had this tweety bird sound when she got messages. I was hoping someone who wasn't me would chimp attack her.

I also sat next to a dude who had his phone silenced, but had that flash light blinky thing that would light up the solar system every time he got a message.

I don't visit cinema often (because I don't like listening to other people's reactions instead of the film), but I had a horrible experience during the Scary Movie 2 screening. The projector started malfunctioning and it stopped a few times and fast forwarded a few minutes of the movie. Nope, it wasn't haunted and the cinema personnel refused to give any refunds and since I was gifted the ticket I didn't join the people making a scene. It was an old cinema with a 30+ year old equipment that closed down a few months later, at least that's some karma.

Went to see Parasite in a limited theatre release after seeing it at home on a torrent to support the filmmaker and as it was one of my favourite films of 2019.

Only to go in and have fucking idiots in my screening keep moaning that they were talking in a foreign language and that they were having to read subtitles, I had this couple to one side of me that kept more or less dry humping the entire shitting way through and a few rows in front of me to the left I had a bunch of blokes laughing at the "funny asian people" and saying they all looked the same.

Never change England.

That's something which has always made no sense to me. You're paying cash to watch a movie and it goes to waste when you're on your phone instead. Was the bitch who was texting some hottie? What did you do about both situations?

Always pirate responsibly and ethically.

They musn't have got the memo.

One technical and one about the movie.

Watching Amazon Prime on a Roku TV and 4k HDR doesn't work for some reason.

Watching the directors cut of Leon the Professional. It takes a somewhat awkward but sweet revenge action movie and turns it into pedophilia propaganda.

I still remember that one time when I snapped during Spielbergs WAR OF THE WORLD´s in 2005.
I was totally hyped for that movie and extra went to an early 2pm Screening just on my own in order to avoid an overly crowded Theater,disturbing/diminishing my experience...

That plan worked with only like 30% attendance… BUT ten rows behind me was a group of pubescent Teenagers, being annoying as hell, constantly giggling, talking, walking around and basically not giving a shit about anything Happening on screen.

I´m usually a really calm & composed dude but those Kids pissed me off to no end. As you might know, the movie is filled with nerve wrecking tension so because of that my annoyance threshold was probably much lower than usual.

While enduring the constant noise behind me for good 40+ minutes I was squeezing the remaining 1/4th of my Popcorn in its bag - putting all my held back Anger into that constant squeeze - literally turning that Bag into a baseball sized object with the density of Wood ⚾

those brats just wouldnt stop and when other attendees asked them politely to tone it down, they even got louder, making fun of those People etc...

anyway, at some point I just snapped, turned around yelling "SHUT YOUR FUCKING MOUTH" at the loudest asshole in that Group and also throwing my carefully crafted wooden ´Baseball´ with all the force I could muster.
I initially was just planning to throw that thing in their general direction to ´underline my point´ but by coincidence (or probably Karma) that ball of compressed anger hit the aforementioned loudmouthed Kid right on his nose ! His baffled reaction to my outbreak was a teary ".....K" and not a single Sound was heard from that group for the entire rest of the movie…. :messenger_beaming:

They obviously where scared shittless since they even rushed out of the Theater once the credits rolled even BEFORE the lights came on so they wouldnt have to face me in the Lobby or something… LOL

Didnt realize I came across THAT menacing to them…. but the fact that I´m a 6.5 ft tall dude with long hair probably helped a little in that regard :messenger_sunglasses:

OP basically described every Michael Bay movie I've ever seen. I always point to Transformers 1 as being my breaking point when I could no longer take the bad acting/dialogue associated with Michael Bay films. Megan Fox's acting stopped me from ever checking out another Transformers movie.

You need to rewatch those two earlier Bad Boys movies and then watch this latest instalment. Somewhat different in terms of tone, but visually they look similar and unfortunately it was rushed out the door despite having 10+ years to make it.

Martin Lawrence is way too fat for me to take that movie seriously. Simple as that. Trailer killed my interest immediately.

Projector broke down an hour in to the final LOTR movie. That sucked.

Biggest disappointment movie wise was either Phantom Menace or Attack of the Clones.
Phantom Menace was just a massive let-down, but somehow I remember getting hyped for AotC anyway - and that was an even bigger piece of crap.

Same thing happened to me a couple of times.

In Kill Bill 2 halfway through the movie the power went out.

Then a couple of years ago I was seeing some movie in IMAX (can't remember what it was) and the projector melted due to the extreme heat that summer. That theater was down for a few days and we all got free IMAX tickets.

At least you didn't watch a full hour of pretty much only preamble and back story.

When I went and saw Deadpool a uh... distinguished gentleman kept singing along with EVERY song as the movie was going. Around halfway through I politely asked the gentleman if he could please not sing at the top of his lungs in a crowded theater. He responded by apologizing and saying he would keep quiet for the rest of the film... just kidding, he started slinging profanities and was removed by the police. At least I got my money back. I went and saw the movie at another theater the next day.

Crowds gathering to watch a movie for 1+hours is a tricky thing more than anything I hope the projector bulb doesn't break but it happens, for the most part my movie theater experiences have been good.

I'm dreaming of some sort of impossible social credit system that would work in a similar way to the thing they do with some fighting games, where if you rage quit a lot, they just start only matching you with other rage quitters. If you've been designated as a person who can't shut up for 2 hours, you go in the viewing room with the other yappers, and the considerate viewers eventually are just left to watch movies in peace with each other.

Why movie theaters are for people to plant there 'come at me bro' flag. I will never understand.

There were a few screenings that a genuinely feared for bodily harm / malice from the insane crowd.

I saw Crimson Tide with 2 guys that were in a heated argument off and on throughout the movie....

Came back from watching a Japanese animated movie 'Weathering With You' and even though I found it enjoyable, there was a girl who kept on laughing whenever the cat came on. Overall it wasn't too bad as there was no conversation, which is something I can't stand.

I enjoyed Bad Boys 3 a lot, I have to agree with what others have said, the Bay films aren't cinematic masterpieces, they are stupid fun.
Even though I enjoyed Bad Boys 3 it still wasn't as good as the first 2, that doesn't make it a bad film though.

Ending scene spoiler
I do love at the end how one minute they are on the top floor of a burning building. Nek minute they are outside the entrance on the ground. My wife turned to me and said, "How did they get down?"

On the action side of things, the car type chases weren't as good at all, you are right in saying that the Bay flare was missing. The shootouts were fine though, the geography of the scene was laid out pretty well. On the joke side of things, I laughed a lot.
